Am I allowed to decorate the outside of our cabin door?

You can check the FAQ on the website but I can sum up the officially policy in that all decorations must be flame retardant. They have the right to remove anything. While I did not see it enforced in December, just be aware that they very well could...

We cruise a lot and have found it depends on ship. We have a friend that travels with us and loves decorating her door. On the Triumph last year, it was allowed. On the Dream in December they made her take it down because it was not fire retardant. Same thing on the Elation last September they made her take it down. Good luck and hope you have a great cruise.

I like to decorate, didn't do it last cruise for some reason but a cabin near us had three balloons hanging and everyone near loved them cause they knew they were near their cabin. We were aft and it was a relief to see those balloons and know you were almost to your room.

You should see some of the artwork we've seen on our past cruises. It was like Hobby Lobby threw up on the door. :)

Ha! that is funny! LOL

Just back from Magic.. and there were lots of doors decorated.. we had a simple 8.5 x 11 bristol board picture on the door.. with "stik tac putty" holding it on.. which is easily removed without residue that tape might leave

also.. there was a hanger on the mail box beside the door.. a thread holding a music note, then a carnival funnel , and a picture of us...

some folks down the corridor had the entire door covered in characters ... I would think the "ninjas" who sneak in and make the beds might find that a bit awkward... as most people slide their body / bum / shoulder along the door to hold it open while getting in the cabin... I would suggest it is above shoulder height which worked great for us! :)

Have Fun with your door! :D

Teacher supply stores will be your best source of fire retardant items.

Carnival has had rules/guidelines for door decorating for years. The recently (Oct/Nov 2016) released updated rules state the decorations from the fun shop comply with the fire resistant guideline. Enforcement of the rules varies widely from ship to ship.

The following is my personal opinion:

Carnival will eventually ban door decorations stating that passengers were not able to comply with the rules. This non compliance was a passenger safety violation and cause excessive damage ships.

I hope I am wrong. I enjoy seeing the different doors.

I thought i read somewhere that all door decorations must be on a magnet only. Apparently a lot of people were using packing tape or duct tape to put decorations on their door. By the end of the week, it would leave some sticky residue or even pull off some chunks of paint. Apparently the cruise lines are a bit tired of the doors having to be re-painted often, or looking like a Motel 6 with all the nasty tape markings on it.

I like to have something on my door, just to identify it a bit easier when walking down a long hallway with 100 other cabins and not wanting to insert my card into the wrong door. I will make sure that whatever I bring will be attached to a magnet that will not damage the door.

I use a 3m removable hook. No residue, no damage.
