I usually give the bartenders and the steward that brings my morning coffee and Danish, an additional cash tip. On my last cruise (many years ago), I gave out 2 dollar bills. Now I'm considering gold presidential dollars..

Curious as to why you would give odd currency but I would stick to one dollar bills. Keep it simple for the workers to use in ports.

The crew are not collectors. They would not appreciate collectibles. They want plain cash that they can uses when they are ashore.

I just stick to small bills. I bring $100 in dollar bills, along with $5 and $10 bills for other things.

 

That will more than cover incidental tips - things above and beyond our already pre-paid service charges and gratuities.

We tried the gold dollars on a cruise out of NOLA thinking it easier for our kids to carry and not lose. They were not well received and I think a lot of staff did not reaize they were US currency.

Many businesses will refuse a $2 bill, thinking it is only novelty money. Give them $1s. They need money to spend, not collect.

If you want to get rid of the "touts" in South America agree on a price and then offer them the "golden" dollars; they take off fast.
