Cheers: I just did the Math. Thank you Carnival!

While I have never bought the cheers program I have thought about it. I usually add up my drinks at the end and find that I would not have saved money. I usually get a free drink card at the casino a couple days in anyway so it wouldn't be worth it for me and my wife drinks but not that much maybe 6 a day. My question is however is the 15 drink limit mandatory? On a carnival cruise a while back I think on the magic we were partying with some people we met and they had the drink package. They reached 15 drinks each and they kept on buying drinks like regular after that. Is it a call that the bartender can make or is automatically halted now at 15 in the computer system? Does anyone know?

Previously you could stop at drink 14 and buy on your own and then enjoy 15 right before you go to bed. They have recently amended this for a hard cut off. You can buy a round, but one of them will count towards your 15. Of course the way around this would be if the people you bought a round for just left their drinks on the table and the person who bought the round drank them.

If your wife drinks 6 per day, depending upon her drink of choice, you're either close to or ahead of the game. All it takes is 5 high end drinks from Alchemy, 6 wines or frozen or 8 beers to break even. And then all of the non alcoholic drinks that are unlimited is pure gravy. Bottled water, espresso based hot and cold coffee drinks, vitamin water, energy drinks, soda, juice, and milkshakes.

How does the hard cut off work now? Last week I bought a bucket of beer by the pool, only one counted toward cheers and I paid for the rest. I was still able to use the rest of my 15 drinks that evening. Just curious so I can plan better in the future and not run out too early lol.

Buying a bucket like you did is the way to avoid things and get more than 15 since only one counts towards your Cheers card and you have paid for the rest. Where the problem comes in is if you're drinking mixed drinks. The round that you're going to drink instead of giving to others will be sitting and getting watered down. The way around it as I have stated on previous threads is to try to drink 15 Foster's Oil cans or 15 long Island iced Teas. If you can polish off either of those over the course of a day....More power to you.

I'll be happy with about 4 beers during the day and my seat at the Alchemy Bar for happy hour and post dinner enjoying maybe six concoctions of my choosing. Including bottled water and a double espresso over ice to start the day and a hot one with dinner, I'll break 100.00 bar tab each day and pay only 50.00.

Ok good to know, I don't mind enjoying a few beers in the afternoon by the pool but usually I drink whiskey and coke and they go down relatively fast. Same with scotch in the evening. I rarely do long islands, too much liquid to make you feel full. The oil cans are ok except the last half is usually warm lol.

If he is 21 or older, both will be required to get it. If you order ahead of time it will automatically add it in for both parties and you will be required to pay for 2 at that time. If you do it onboard for $5pp/per day more, it will be added to both accounts. They will not do it for only one.

Okay, there is another thread about Cheers and "just" drinking beer. Someone mentioned about sailing from NY or TX and you can only start Cheers on day 2. So my question: since I am "on the ropes" aka undecided about purchasing and sailing from NY in September, if I do not pre purchase Cheers, but rather purchase it on day 2 or even the lst NIGHT of the cruise, are they going to charge me the extra $5/pp/day because I did not pre purchase even tho I can't start the program until day 2? Like: I am coming out from the MDR the lst night or after breakfast on the lst sea day I decide to purchase, they'll charge me the same as if I purchased it as soon as I boarded the ship or on their website??

That is my automatic response to those that complain that 15 drinks per day is not good enough for them. Would love to see someone try to consume 15 LIT's or 15 oil cans @ 25 oz each over the course of a day.

Karen.....If you prepay for your 7 day cruise, you will only be charged for 6 days because of the day 2 start from NY. If you wait until you're on board, you will pay the extra 5.00 per day.

Okay, thanks, that is what I wanted to know. Just doesn't seem "fair" that I can't wait until I board to purchase since I can't use it on day one anyway. I am just totally undecided and kind of figured I would wait to board, unpack and get the "vibes of the cruise flowing" before I decide lol. It's "only" an extra $60 for the two of us, but it's still $60!!!! Decisions, decisions....

It would actually be 69 extra after factoring in the 15% gratuity. Hope that makes your decision easier to just get it. And pay for it with the 10% discounted cards that are available.

The exact same thing was happening in the mid-90's, with or without the toga. Uh... oh so I heard from a friend...

It was so cool though...The movie had just come out that summer, and it was the first flick I ever saw at the movies twice. Still chuckle when the little kid says " thank you Jesus" when the scantily clad girl comes crashing through his bedroom window while he is checking out his Dad's Playboy.

Ugh! Forgot tip is not included. I know everyone talks about gift cards, but IDK where to find them lol. I have seen them in my grocery story, believe it or not, but there is an activation fee.

Pre-purchase and save the $60.00 put that money aside and put it in a slot machine .

You might get lucky and win big. Then your pre-purchase of Cheers would really be worth it!

I wonder why Carnival will not let you start cheers until day 2. I don't think its a New York law because we just got off the Breakaway that sailed out of New York and started our beverage package as soon as we boarded the ship. We only had to pay the tax on the drinks (.80 - 1.20) until we got out to sea.

What is Carnival's reason for this?

IDK the "official reason" but I'm sure it has to do with tax. Maybe they don't want the hassle of collecting it. This really doesn't bother me as I would actually prefer to get Cheers starting day 2. The lst day is basically a "half day" anyway, plus getting to know the ship, unpacking, all that. I could buy my drinks on day one, then start Cheers day 2. Just seems to defeat the purpose a bit to pay extra just because I didn't pre purchase. I mean, what is the reasoning for THAT? :(

If people have OBC and they want to use it for Cheers, they have to pay the 5.00 surcharge as well as those first time newbies (blue cards) that are not familiar with cruise critic and do not know about the five dollar discount. It's all extra money for Carnival.

Regarding the gift cards, they are available for customers of Verizon wireless and Citicards as well as everyone through AARP and Allstate. Do a search, it's easy to find the threads, especially since AARP and Verizon put their cards up for sale this morning. In a nutshell, you earn points and then redeem those points for a 10% savings on the cards. So you get a 500 card for 450 or a 100 card for 90. They can be used to pay all expenses cruise related including deposit, payment, gratuities, Cheers, excursions, etc.
