Anthem of the Seas - Review - Jan 26, 2017 - Feb 7, 2017

Recommended Posts

Transportation

We live in Northern New Jersey (Bergen County) so will drive down to Bayonne for the cruise and park at the pier.

Dining

When I booked this cruise,Anthem was still doing Dynamic Dining – with options for either true dynamic or rotational dynamic (I don’t remember the official names). Since we were going to be part of the group,we chose to do the rotational dining with the group, but also booked a few specialty restaurants for ourselves. I also booked two nights at Coastal Kitchen since were were able to in the Junior Suite.

Dynamic Dining in it's original form, and later form (with the rotational option) was scrapped and Anthem moved to either fixed traditional or My Time Dining like the other ships.

Instead of having a formal restaurant, Anthem will now have formal nights like other ships do.

We now have early fixed dining with the group as well as a few specialty restaurants and Coastal Kitchen booked for ourselves. I booked Chops,Jamie’s Italian, and Wonderland.

During Halloween 2016 weekend there was a sale on specialty restaurants and I was able to cancel and rebook them all.

I purchased the Royal Replenish package for both of us. The beverage packages were revamped as well and the Royal Replenish is now called something like the Refreshment Package. It includes soda, bottled water, specialty tea and specialty coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, and non-alcoholic cocktails. This package works well for me. I tried to convince Scott to get an alcohol package but he doesn’t think it’s worth it for him. Even though he may have a night or two where he drinks enough for it to be worth it, he won’t drink at that pace for 12 nights. The price also went up for the Royal Replenish/Refreshment. When I booked it was maybe $19 per day per person. Then it went up to $26 per day per person. Then it went on sale for $18 per day per person.

Entertainment

In October 2016 I was able to book some of the entertainment. I was able to book We Will Rock You and the Gift.

Spectra’s Caberet wasn’t available to book yet.

I also booked the Northstar for both of us.

I ordered the Surf and Stream during the Halloween weekend sale when it was $8.99 per day.

I finally was able to book Spectra’s cabaret as well

I kept looking for the All Access tour to be available for booking. Finally late December I saw it, but instead of the 3 hour tour for $150 it’s now a 2 hour tour for $99. I’m not sure what was cut out, but I booked it for us for Feb 5 (Day 11).

First, I love the review! I like how you split up each day :-) I also like the pre-planning details!

I'm hoping you can answer a question for me though. I think I have only booked shows once and that was a few years ago on Oasis. When reservations for shows open up, I know it shows the day the show will be on, but does it give you times to choose from? I noticed in one of your pictures below, sometimes a show is twice a day. We are going to try and book MTD reservations around those shows. Thanks in advance :-)

Hi

Yes when booking shows you choose the day as well as time if there are more than one for that day. There are drop downs that show the options.

Booking dining and other activities was all similar.

Hi.

Glad you like the review format.

I worry if I typed more and lost it I would be very upset. I can retype one day.

Also since I am having some picture posting issues it worked better this way going back and forth from iPad to phone.

Nice pictures! The Jr Suite looks like a really nice size on this ship!

The only way I have ever posted pictures from my camera, was to upload them to the computer or a photo site, and then to cc, so not a short cut.

Monday 1/30/17 - St Maarten

We went to the gym in the morning for our usual routine.

We filled up a laundry bag with T Shirts, socks, and underwear to be sent out.

After showering and getting dressed we headed up to the Windjammer for breakfast. We docked in St Maarten about 10:30am.

We met Brenda and the group at the taxi stand at 11am and all of us headed over to Divi Little Bay. The taxi was $5 per person. Renting chairs and umbrellas was $5 for each item.

We changed into our bathing suits and went swimming. The water was nice and clear, but a little chilly at first. We walked up and down the beach. Then we swam some more. I never used to be a beach person but I'm actually enjoying our time at the beach.

After a few hours, Scott and I were ready to head back so used the outdoor shower to rinse off, then changed back into our clothes. The bathrooms that we used to change were clean and well kept. The taxi back for the two of us (just us in a ladies personal car) was $12. We stopped on the way back at an electronics store since Scott wanted to get a cable to hook up to the TV to watch movies there instead of on the laptop. Then the driver dropped us back at the pier.

I was disappointed when I tried to go to the Chocolate store at the pier and they were gone. The shop was totally empty. While we could have gone back into town for the main store, I wasn't sure if they would still be there either and it wasn't that important to get chocolate.

We bought a postcard and were back on the ship by 2:30. We stopped at Cafe 270 for a small lunch. We exchanged our wet towels for new dry ones and headed back to the cabin to shower and change.

Tonight we stopped at the Diamond Lounge for a drink before heading to Chic for dinner with the group. Not everyone showed up tonight. Service was quicker than the last time we were in Chic.

For appetizers Scott had the shrimp cocktail and I had the burrata.

For our entrees Scott had the baby back ribs and I had the Moroccan spiced ahi tuna. I did not like my tuna at all. I think it was the spices on it. Scott gave me one of his ribs and I was fine.

For dessert we both had the English trifle.

We went to the casino after dinner.

At 10:15 I went to the Name that Tune show in the theater. Scott was doing well in the casino so stayed at his table. The show was pretty boring and I was disappointed.

I went back to the casino after the show. I stayed until about 1:30am and Scott stayed a bit longer.

I didn't bring my cell phone off the ship in St Maarten so don't have pictures to post. They are all on my camera instead. Isn't it ironic it's easy to post pictures that are on the phone, but the ones on the camera...not so much.

Tuesday 1/31/17 - Antigua

I went to the gym in the morning and Scott slept in today.

After I returned we showered and got ready to head out.

We had breakfast in Cafe 270 and were off the ship by 10ish.

We wanted to take a cab to Valley Church Beach. The first driver said $32 each way for the two of us. We saw another couple asking about beaches so I asked them if they wanted to share a cab and that way it costs $8 per person (still a total of $32). They were happy to join us. Then the taxi driver wanted to try to fill up a van and get more people all paying $8 each. We were standing with a large family all heading to Valley Church Beach and the driver is looking for 2 more people before they even take us to the cabs. The father of the large family said he would just pay for the extra two people but wanted to go. So we start walking and suddenly there are all these other drivers who said they will take us for $6 per person no waiting. Us and the couple we originally joined up with left with one of the drivers. It was just the 4 of us and the driver. As we're walking with him towards his cab, there are other drivers all trying to get us to leave him and join them instead. I know they are all just trying to make a living but this was a mess. We were glad with stayed with the new guy we joined. We asked him to come back for us at 2pm.

We rented chairs and an umbrella. It's a very pretty beach. It was a bit rocky getting into and out of the water, but once in, it was great. The couple we shared the cab with rented chairs but didn't want an umbrella. They were near us so it would be easy to keep track of each other when it's time to head back.

The weather wasn't the best. It would be nice and sunny, then it would rain, then the sun would come back, then it would rain again. Sometimes the rain would be really heavy, not just a quick shower.

We were ready to leave a bit before 2 so got changed and headed to where the taxi was to meet us. Our driver was there early. He said when it rains he expects people to want to leave earlier. Maybe I'm amused easily, but I thought it was really cute that he had a little brush to brush off your feet if you had sand on them before getting into the van. I carry baby powder and already got the sand off my feet as did Scott so we were ready to jump in.

We did a bit of souvenir shopping by the ship - just things like a T shirt for Scott or a postcard or Christmas ornament. I like to buy postcards in all the ports we visit, not to send to anyone but to put in my photo album with the pictures of the day. It's not always easy to find something to take a picture of with the name of the island and this way it's usually a great shot of the island and the name is clear.

We got back on the ship and had a light lunch at the Windjammer. We then headed back to our cabin to shower.

I don't remember where we went the rest of the afternoon.

We went to the Concierge Lounge around 5:30 for a drink and some snacks. There is a great view out the windows of the wake from the lounge.

We had dinner in Coastal Kitchen tonight. We really enjoyed it. We were at a table for two but it was relatively close to two other tables for two on either side of us. The people were very nice and we ended up chatting with both couples throughout our meal. The waiter was very personable and good at his job.

For appetizers I had the truffle mushroom risotto and Scott had the salmon sashimi.

For entrees I had the butter poached lobster. Scott had the butter poached lobster and scallops. The waiter recommended getting both as he said the portions were small.

The food was very good and we were enjoying Coastal Kitchen a lot. We decided we should add a few more dinners here.

For dessert our waiter, Milan, gave us his recommendations of the three special desserts of the day and brought us all three - rice pudding, chocolate crunch, and baked Alaska. The baked alaska was the best one. It wasn't the normal baked Alaska slice of cake you see in the dining room; instead it was a dome of marshmallow (torched for the burnt effect) with ice cream under it and a sponge cake near the bottom.

At 8:30 we saw the comedian, Phil Tag, in the theater. His show was funny and we both enjoyed it.

We headed to the casino after the show and were on a great winning streak at the 3 card poker table. Not only were we hitting things with 3 cards, but with the 6 card bonus too - we hit 4 of a kind, flushes, straights, etc. We were having a great time.

I went to the cabin just after midnight and Scott stayed in the casino until about 2am.

Wednesday 2/1/17 - Martinique

I was at the gym when they opened at 6am today.

We got ourselves showered and dressed. We were originally scheduled for a zoo tour but heard disappointing things about it - that the animals were all tied up which would upset us as animal lovers so we ended up cancelling the excursion.

We had breakfast in the Windjammer then stopped by Coastal Kitchen to add a few more night's dinner reservations there. We even cancelled our second night at Chops, preferring to go back to Coastal Kitchen.

We got off the ship and walked into town. We browsed a few shops. We bought a postcard, magnet, ornament, and some soap. The people working in the store were not very friendly or very happy that we wanted to pay with US dollars and they acted like it was a hardship to convert the Euros to Dollars to tell us prices. I work in a global investment banking firm and deal with different currencies daily so am aware of what it should be. After waiting and much hemming and hawing they finally figured it out, but you didn't get the sense that they really cared about our business. I know I'm in another country, but the store had signs that they accept US dollars. If they didn't I would understand them not wanting us to use US dollars.

We passed a bakery that smelled great. I asked if they take US dollar and the first person said yes no problem. All I wanted was a chocolate croissant. When I went to pay in US$ it was a problem and took them a while to figure it out.

It started raining when we left the bakery. We decided to just head back to the ship. We did not give Martinique a fair chance since we didn't venture that far, but our initial impressions were not very good.

We were back on board Anthem by 10am.

We called the spa and I booked the 20/20/20 special for 11:45. Scott will go to the gym then since he didn't go this morning with me.

We stopped at the Concierge Lounge and cancelled the St Kitts Train tour. That was the tour Scott specifically asked for. We have been having a lot of fun going to the beach and he said he would prefer to do that in St Kitts.

I sent an email to Carambola Beach Club to see if we could make a reservation for Friday when we are in St Kitts. Many of the people in the group are also going to Carambola.

We headed up - Scott to the gym and me to the spa. When I checked in there was another Noreen in the waiting room. That's always a shock when there is someone else with my name since it's not that common.

I had the back/shoulder massage, mini facial, and foot/ankle massage. It was a great treatment. The pads she put over my eyes burned my eyelids a bit so I asked her to remove them. The massage was great. I asked what type it was and she said deep tissue. At home I've gotten Swedish massages but stayed away from deep tissue. I may go for deep tissue at home now since this felt great. Of course, there was the push for various products to buy at the end but I just said no thank you to those.

I met Scott back at the cabin and we went to the pool. We laid down on the lounge chairs for a bit then went into the pool. He picked up hot dogs and fries from the Windjammer when he couldn't find the hot dog stand that's near the bumper cars. We spent more time on deck and in the pool for a bit longer then we went back to the cabin to shower and change.

We went to the Concierge lounge for a pre-dinner drink. We had dinner tonight with the group in Chic. We told them about Coastal Kitchen. Another couple in the group is also in a Junior Suite so we told them they should give it a try. I think this is the night I had Beef Wellington in the dining room. I've never had it before and wanted to try it. We like to watch cooking shows and they often make this on those shows. It was very good. I don't remember what else we ate tonight.

After dinner we went to the casino. I earned enough points to be a Casino VIP and they put a little sticker on my sea pass card. That gives me free drinks in the casino and no more 5% fee if I take money out against my card in the casino. I often will take money out against my seapass if I'm at a table playing. I don't want to leave to go back to my cabin to take money or chips out of the safe; it's easier to just take it out from the seapass. With the fee being waived it's even better.

I wanted to go to the show tonight but we were busy playing and having fun in the casino so we missed it.

I went upstairs around 1am and Scott stayed until the casino closed.

Thursday 2/2/17 - Barbados

I went to the gym in the morning while Scott slept.

When I got back he said that Brenda called and made plans to meet at 9 to head to the Boatyard.

After showering and getting dressed, we had a quick breakfast in Cafe 270.

We met Brenda and Charlie right off the ship. There was a shuttle to the terminal (no charge) then we took a cab to the Boatyard for $5 per person.

The Boatyard charges $20 per person. That includes chairs, umbrellas, water trampoline, water slide, turtle snorkel, a free drink, and a cab ride back to the pier. They have outdoor fresh water showers, bathrooms, and changing areas. The nicest bathrooms this trip at a beach were those at Little Divi Bay. The chairs and umbrellas were lined up on the beach and you choose whichever ones you want and sit down.

We changed and went into the water. The water was the most amazing turquoise color. It matched the color on my toenails (Viva Antigua by Essie). The floor was soft smooth sand with no rocks.

Off topic pedicure story...When I went to get my pre-cruise pedicure I knew I wanted a blue that would remind me of the Caribbean water for my toes. I remember seeing this Viva Antigua color in the summer and asked for it. The woman had to search all over but finally found it. I didn't have the same colors on my fingernails - instead they were a sort of bright pinkish color. For my fingernails I did the Gel/Shellac manicure which lasted and looked great the whole trip. It even looked great past the trip. The toes don't need the Gel/Shellac as the regular pedicure lasts fine.

We played in the water for a while, walked on the beach, read a bit, got our free drink at the bar, and went back in the water. We really enjoyed our day at the Boatyard. We didn't take advantage of all they had to offer such as the water inflatables or the snorkel ride to the see the turtles. Scott wasn't as crazy about the view at the Boatyard since it was kind of crowded and you saw all sorts of boats and things in the water rather then just seeing the ocean.

We were ready to head back by around 1:30. We shopped a bit in the terminal shops for things like a postcard, ornament, magnet, T Shirt for Scott, and rum cakes for me to bring to the office.

We invited Brenda and Charlie to Coastal Kitchen for dinner tonight. Joe and Carol (the other couple in a junior suite) are also booked there tonight so I will try to get us all onto one reservation together.

Back on the ship we had a quick snack at the Windjammer. Scott did some work on the computer. I checked my email and saw we received the confirmation from Carambola Beach club for tomorrow.

Scott headed to the gym since he didn't go this morning.

I tried to call the dining line and the Concierge but there wasn't an answer anywhere.

We both got showered and dressed for the evening.

At 5 Coastal Kitchen was still closed so we headed up to the Concierge Lounge. Ricardo (the concierge) was able to get it accomplished...Move Joe and Carol's 6:15 to 6, add Brenda and Charlie to the reservation. Basically make it a reservation for 6 people at 6. We said we will pay the guest fee for Brenda and Charlie.

At 6 we all met at Coastal Kitchen. We were seated in the same section with the same waiter, Milan, that we had before. We were happy as we thought he was great. He continued joking around with us and helped make the meal a lot of fun.

For appetizers I had the Pizzette which I didn't like so gave it to Scott. Scott had the Himachi Crudo (like sashimi) that he gave me. We shared as usual but I didn't eat more than a bite of the Pizzette.

For Entrees I had the sesame crusted tuna and Scott had the seafood pasta.

For dessert we both had the chocolate dome creme brûlée. It was too rich for me but everyone else liked it.

By the time we left it was after 8:30. We didn't realize we were there for so long. We were having such a nice time. We missed the 8:30 show. When we asked about paying the charge for Brenda and Charlie, they said not to worry, it's OK for us to bring them as our guest. That was a nice surprise.

We made plans to meet by the Welcome to St Kitts sign tomorrow as soon as we're able to get off the ship as many are headed to Carambola so we will all take a cab together.

Scott and I headed to the casino. I stayed until maybe 12:30 and Scott stayed a bit later.

Friday 2/3/17 - St Kitts

We went to the gym together in the morning.

We showered and got ready for a beach day.

We had breakfast in the Windjammer. We docked a bit earlier than expected. We met the group at the end of the pier by the Welcome to St Kitts sign. There were 14 of us in the cab and we fit perfectly on our way to Carambola Beach Club. The cab cost $4 per person.

We reserved our chairs and umbrella in advance. After paying, we went out to the beach to flag down an attendant to bring us to set up the chairs/umbrella for us. This was a little slow, they needed more attendants. However, once someone was there, we went to our assigned spot which was a great location. The chairs were much closer to the next set of chairs than they were the last time I was here. Brenda and the rest of the group were set up all the way at the end of the beach. She wasn't happy with her location. They all reserved as a group. We reserved later on separately when our plans changed for St Kitts.

It was much more crowded in general than it's been the last few times I was here. This is my third visit to Carambola. We changed and went into the water. We snorkeled, swam, and read on our chairs for a bit. We chatted with the people sitting near us.

There are outdoor showers to rinse off as well as changing areas and bathrooms. It's pretty well kept.

We changed and left about 2pm and took a cab back for $4 per person.

We did some shopping by the pier, again the usual little trinkets like postcard, ornament, and T shirt for Scott.

Back on the ship we had a small snack at the Windjammer before heading up to our cabin to shower. We sat on our lounge chairs on the balcony for a bit. The lounge chairs are very nice. They are actual cushioned lounge chairs so very comfortable. They aren't the chair and ottoman that many balconies have, these are true one piece lounge chairs.

We went up to the Concierge Lounge around 5. Ricardo seemed annoyed that I had a question for him and said I should take care of those things in the morning when it's less crowded. I asked him about the laundry charge. One of the Diamond Plus perks is a free bag of laundry (the stuff your socks/T shirts/underwear) bag. He thought it was one per cabin, but it's supposed to be one for each of us since we're both Diamond Plus. He said he would call about it for us. The first time we sent the bag of laundry was fine - no charge. The second time we were charged.

We had dinner at Coastal Kitchen at 6:15. We had our same waiter, Milan, who by now is like an old friend. He jokes around with us. He automatically brings our beverage of choice (Sprite with a straw for me, and Diet Coke for Scott).

For appetizers I had the crab cake and Scott had the seafood voulet.

For entrees I had the tortellini and Scott had the steak

For dessert I had the meringue dessert and Scott had the panna cotta.

We enjoyed our meal. We were not done until after 8:30 so we missed the show in the theater.

We went to the casino and had fun there.

At 11:15 we went to the Quest in 270. Scott's never seen one before and we were all telling him how much fun they are; crazy and silly where you usually laugh so hard. This was the lamest, most boring Quest I've ever been to. It was hard to stay awake.

After the Quest we picked up some pizza and headed back to our cabin. We started watching a movie and fell asleep.

Saturday 2/4/17 - At Sea

We went to the gym in the morning. As the cruise goes on, it's less and less crowded in the gym.

We had breakfast at the Windjammer and then walked around the jogging track. It's really nice out and sunny. We sat outside on the deck for a bit as well.

We went to get our Boarding picture and were very disappointed at how poorly it was done. I always buy my boarding photo. The top of the picture with the ship's name was cut off slightly. Then across the middle it should say something like "Adventure starts here" but that was cut off and says "enture starts here". When we asked the person working there he basically said that the board they take the picture in front of is too wide and if they get the whole slogan the people are too small. He told us we should just photoshop it at home. $20 for a picture and I should photoshop it? Even though we get a picture free with the crown and anchor perks I was very annoyed by that response. He also told us there was a different boarding photo we could have gotten instead. In the chaos of boarding I didn't see multiple picture stations. I saw one boarding photo area. And how would I know in advance that it would be cropped and look stupid?

We went to see We Will Rock You at 2:30. When we went into the theater Scott stepped out for a few minutes. I thought he went to the bathroom but he went back to the photo guy. He convinced him to create a new quasi boarding photo for us. We need to take a new picture tonight since one of the backdrops will be a picture of the ship. OK, we'll give that a try. It has to be an improvement on what the picture looks like now.

We enjoyed We Will Rock You but it's a bit too long at almost two hours.

We stopped in the casino and Scott is also a VIP in the casino and got his sticker for free drinks and no more fee if taking money out on his seapass card.

We went to the cabin to shower and change for dinner. We went to take the photo by the ship background. While waiting we were talking to the lady on line behind us. There were two picture backdrops and she kept saying she didn't want the picture with the cheesy ship background. Kind of funny since that's the one we wanted to take. We didn't realize it was formal night since that would normally be tomorrow night but some people were pretty dressed up so we asked. We weren't dressed poorly, more like business casual (or what you would wear going to dinner in a nice steakhouse at home). We didn't change into something more formal.

We stopped at the Concierge Lounge for a drink and then headed to Coastal Kitchen for dinner at 6:15.

I don't remember what appetizers we had but we both had the lobster tail entree and shared an order of gnocchi. For dessert we both had the baked Alaska. We were very happy with our dinners.

We went back to the casino for the rest of the evening.

Here is a picture of the original boarding photo that I am not happy with - I still bought it since I always get the boarding photo and I didn't know we'd get a "make up" one. I took the picture of the picture at home. I haven't put it out in a frame since I'm still not happy with it.

Noreen I am enjoying your review and "re living" my Anthem cruise from Jan 3.:)

I am also a big fan of "Viva Antigua" and with a little sparkle added to it it looks fabulous!

Thank you

I never thought of adding sparkle to the Viva Antigua color, but will have to try it next time I get it.

Thanks for the photo tip, on the welcome aboard photo. If I see the background that you had, I will look for a different one. That looks ridiculous!

We board next weekend.:D

Definitely get the other one if there is another one.

Or ask the photographer to make sure to get the whole saying in the picture.

I still can't believe they thought it was good enough to sell the way it was. It's promoting their product and that doesn't show it in the best light.

I wonder if other people complained or even noticed it.
