AC Hotel Condado, our hotel reservation in Isla Verde was cancelled due to Maria so we switched to here

Lots of price gouging going on

Pros - Good location, can walk to lots of restaurants, comfy bed, pretty rooftop pool with views. They let you go to the San Juan Marriott Casino resort on the beach and use the amenities.

Cons - price too high, room was not our style, modern with tile and we could constantly hear the person above us walking and loud housekeepers yelling to each other in the hallway early in the morning. Sink is in your room, there is only a glazed glass barn door for shower and toilet area separating the room, not much privacy. After sitting for 10 minutes waiting for a waiter for bfast at 10am, we were told they only serve breakfast til 10am, crazy on a weekend.

If you must stay here ask for an upper floor with ocean view. As a rewards member we weren't given much of a room choice. Avoid the side by Burger King.

No I don't have a hotel (any more). We fly on Thursday 1/4 and needed 2 nights). After two hotels canceled and I found one out near the University (2 stars) that was $200 night! (remember there is a 21% tax in SJ), I decided to try Air BnB. We needed two beds because I'm traveling with another guy. Because we wanted location, I looked in Old San Juan and found a fabulous artist's home in a renovated factory. 103 reviews all 5 stars! And it was $105/night with taxes. Though I couldn't find a discount code before I booked, Air BnB gave me a referral code to share which gets you $40 US off your first air bnb booking. (To be transparent, I'll get $20 off my NEXT - not this one). A few folks on our cruise used it and it worked. Here it is in case it helps. www.airbnb.com/c/stever11545

I have been trying to find a hotel, preferably in the OSJ area, prior to our cruise, which isn't until April 1st.

I have been skimming over this thread trying to see what people thought, experiences, electricity and so on.

But I believe I have only seen several people post about staying in Hotel Casablanca...which I would love to stay there...however, we have 3 people and a lot of rooms are saying only 2 people and the other rooms that will hold 3 people say you have to stay at least 2 nights. We will only be there 1 night prior to our cruise.

Any other hotels in the OSJ area open and available without having to sacrifice my first born son to pay for it? I understand they are struggling to get rebuilt, but the prices of these hotels are crazy outrageous compared to when we were here before and this is leaving a sour taste in my mouth about even returning here at this point (although too late since we are already booked and paid for).

As I noted above. Try AirBnB. You can read the reviews and the host has to accept you. Should be able to get a room with private bath for under $125/night (unless others on your cruise have booked already). And you'll actually get to interact with locals and get good advice. And Air BNB reservations are not cancelable. See my post for the$40 discount code. Okay here it is again: www.airbnb.com/c/stever11545 Hope you find something. And save your first born :)

Keep looking at the same places. People are booking multiple rooms and/or changing hotels all the time. When there is no charge to cancel, people are booking at different sites as insurance in case the hotel gets booked up by FEMA recovery workers. What is closed today could be open tomorrow.

So, I guess I just found out that RC docks at an entirely different port (Pan American) instead of OSJ. I guess this now changes everything :(. I will probably have to look for a different hotel over that way now. I really wanted to stay in OSJ and explore a little more that night/next day.

Any suggestions for me now? Anyone know how much a taxi from OSJ would be over to the PA port? Would it still be worth it for us to stay in OSJ? Our flight doesn't come in until 5pm, so I imagine we wouldn't even arrive to the hotel until 6 or so, but I still wanted to walk around a bit. I love OSJ, even at night.

We're staying at Hotel Milano. Just my husband and I. Close to 1 of the forts and they're going to hold the luggage when we get off the ship, so we can start touring. I'm frugal and the price was good. Haven't stayed there yet (Feb. 17th), so can't give a review.

Punta de Vista is the rooftop restaurant at Hotel Milano. We had lunch there in early December. I recommend it.

Stay in Old San Juan if that is what is comfortable for you. We took a taxi from the Pan American pier to Barrachina's in Old San Juan for about $10. The distance is probably about 3 miles.

Pan American pier where RC and Celebrity dock is not far from OSJ. Taxis are very easily available to go either way.

There are quite a few hotels in the vicinity of Pan American, but not walkable to the port.......welllll, I did see a couple pulling their rollling luggage and walking, but I would not personally do that.

You can stay in OSJ and it will take you a few minutes taxi ride to the Pan American pier. No need to change your OSJ plans because of the pier. It is all close bye.

It's probably only a 10 minute taxi ride from all OSJ to the Pan Am Pier. We stayed in Old San Juan five years ago and just took a taxi to the pier.

Checked into the Intercontinental today (12/27) - everything seems to be running like it was the last time we stayed here a few years ago. We went into Old San Juan and it was crowded, lots of stores and restaurants open.

Thanks! We are staying there 1 night pre-cruise in February. How was the rest of your stay?

Does anyone have any recent information on the Sheraton in Old San Juan? Is it still housing FEMA workers and cancelling reservations? I've looked through this thread, but see no mention of it since mid November. Thanks :-)

That could have been us! We’ve walked to the port several times. You’re right - it’s not for everyone.

We did that too! Had lunch there, walked the alley ways, then got a cab back to Pan Am pier. And true, the cab charged us $5 per person. I love OSJ.

Meant to post earlier. Husband and I stayed both pre cruise and post cruise (12/10, 12/11 & 12/23, 12/24) at the Doubletree Hilton in Condando. Everything was great. No problems with any electricity and the internet worked perfectly. Old San Juan was up and running and everyone was happy to see tourists - cabs, restaurants, shops - most open and running without generators. National Historic Park (forts) were open.

I'm back. Just had great meal on top of hotel Milan with great view cheap prices and the most friendly service.

I stopped at desk and asked rates. Now is high season and they are only $125/night which is cheap in ish. Great location. And fully operational. If i'"d known about it I'd have stayed here. I did not see rooms but looks decent and you can't beat. Location. I'm not an owner. Just sharing. Their website is http://www.Hotelmilanopr.com

Even if you don't stay check out the restaurant and bar. 5 dollar pina coladas that are gr8

Just checked out of Best Western Condado this morning. I know it's been said before but I wanted to give my input.

Best Western Condado appears to be fully functional. There is hot water, cold AC and the rooms are clean. To get into the stairwells and to go up in the elevators you must have a key card which is a nice safety feature.

Also, if you stay in the north tower facing CVS on a Friday night you might not get much sleep due to live music playing until after 11pm. Our room was directly over the hotel restaurant. Which btw the food was good but imo was slightly over priced.

There is a CVS and a Walgreens directly across the street from the hotel. And a ton of shops within walking distance.

There are some homeless people who are in the street but from what I saw they didn't appear to bother anyone.

Stop lights are missing in areas and the taxi driver we had was very thankful to have passengers. Things seem to be getting better although there are signs of the hurricane still all over. From damaged buildings to trees and telephone poles down. I spoke to the driver during the entire trip and he did say everyone is happy to see tourists back in town. More tourists means more work for everyone. From the taxi drivers to bartenders to shop workers.

Well this turned into a longer post than I meant to.......
