NSWP Posted November 15, 2017 #76 Share Posted November 15, 2017 Here’s the notice in the shops - they can’t sell to domestic cruisers if the price is over $50! Sent from my iPhone using Forums Thanks Gae, one day I will tell you all what happened with duty free on Star Princess, Sydney - Darwin in March 2004. I think I told it before. We marched off with heaps, before we got stopped at customs, but the ship sold it to us. But there was a Customs spy on board, but we beat him.
Rare MicCanberra Posted November 15, 2017 #77 Share Posted November 15, 2017 We rarely buy any duty free but I know plenty who have despite the rules. The ship staff can be lax sometimes.
The_Big_M Posted November 15, 2017 #78 Share Posted November 15, 2017 Gae, are you able to confirm something for me please? Have heard that in the shops onboard there are signs up saying that there is a $50 pp spend limit due to Australian Customs Rules for Domestic Cruises. (Have never come across this at all on RCI or Carnival on the domestic cruises we've done) Yes, same restriction on Princess. I wouldn't be surprised if similar comes in on RCL/Celebrity. Rare MicCanberra Posted November 15, 2017 #79 Share Posted November 15, 2017 Yes, same restriction on Princess. I wouldn't be surprised if similar comes in on RCL/Celebrity. Apart from a couple of samplers though these two lines do not really do many cruises that do not get to an international port.
GUT2407 Posted November 15, 2017 #80 Share Posted November 15, 2017 Apart from a couple of samplers though these two lines do not really do many cruises that do not get to an international port. All the Tassie ones.
Rare MicCanberra Posted November 15, 2017 #81 Share Posted November 15, 2017 All the Tassie ones. Those two lines rarely just do Tassie though, they normally combine it with NZ.
GUT2407 Posted November 16, 2017 #82 Share Posted November 16, 2017 Those two lines rarely just do Tassie though, they normally combine it with NZ. Princess run three or four a year to Tas, in fact on Emerald last December all the shops were open and trading.
The_Big_M Posted November 16, 2017 #83 Share Posted November 16, 2017 Apart from a couple of samplers though these two lines do not really do many cruises that do not get to an international port. But there are actually a large number of those - around 10 a year which would be more than most other lines (except P&O).

Hunter69 Posted November 16, 2017 #85 Share Posted November 16, 2017 Carnival Last week & earlier in the year. I did Sydney to Melb & Sydney to Hobart. They only had Jewerly & perfume open; The grog was barricaded off. Can't get much for $50. Oh this was out at sea also, closed while in port...Strange.. gaechann Posted November 16, 2017 Author #86 Share Posted November 16, 2017 Thanks Gae, one day I will tell you all what happened with duty free on Star Princess, Sydney - Darwin in March 2004. I think I told it before. We marched off with heaps, before we got stopped at customs, but the ship sold it to us. But there was a Customs spy on board, but we beat him. So now I have internet again I’ll continue with the tale: We were informed by one staff member to restrict our purchases to a value of $35USD because by the time the VAT was added the conversion to AUD would be very close to $50. I picked out a nice pair of earrings priced $38USD then asked the cashier if that was “close enough” in price. He advised that they could only sell us essential items - company branded items or essential items such as snacks! An international passenger beside me was told the same whereas on Cunard those passengers who had arrived from and/or were continuing to foreign ports were able to purchase anything. Virtually all purchases were off limit to all passengers until the ship makes it’s way over to NZ. With $140USD of OBC still to use I had to resort to playing Bingo on the last day to use some of it up (non-refundable OBC). With a FREE drinks package, FREE gratuities, FREE specialty dining there was little else I could do - the Casino advised that I couldn’t use it there with them nor could I cash it out there. Rare MicCanberra Posted November 16, 2017 #87 Share Posted November 16, 2017 Wow, I can understand not being able to cash it out in the casino but I am surprised that you couldn't spend it in the casino.

The cashier told me that non-refundable OBC could not be used for gambling purposes - as I’ve never spent either time or money in a Casino it was all new to me!
