svards Posted February 4, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2018 Hi all We are going on Silhouette in May 18 to the Baltic’s. Please could you advise on best way to explore cities on our own. I have heard there are shuttle buses. How much/ how easy are they to get? In St Petersberg we are going on a Celebrity excursion. If 2 or 1.5 days do you come back to the ship in between days? Ports are: Copenhagen Tallinn St Petersberg Helsinki Stockholm Warnemunde ( we are not going to Berlin) Many thanks for help anyone can give. :)
Rare cruisestitch Posted February 4, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 4, 2018 Lots of information in the ports of call boards. Start there and you should find out what you need.

Lastdance Posted February 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 4, 2018 Yes, you do come back to the ship after long days of touring and you will be tired. Talinn is small and crowded due to all the ships, but I really enjoyed it. Actually, all the ports are special, especially St, Petersburg...yes, you need to research!!! Silkroad Posted February 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted February 4, 2018 As some of the others have said, the Cruise Critic forums are a great place to start. You’ll find more up to date information there than you will in any book IMO. Also, do join the roll call for your sailing because others will share useful information. Here is the link to the CC forum for Northern Europe and Baltic Sea: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=192 Yes, Celebrity will arrange shuttles to and from the destination port if necessary. There will be a charge, but there’s no way to know in advance. To give you an idea, it cost five euros per person, round trip, last year in Barcelona. They seem to always have enough for everyone. There are often local buses, taxis or water taxis as well. We’ve found that we’d often rather take a brisk 20 or 30 minute walk to town instead of taking a shuttle. If you mean you’re doing a two day shore excursion in St. Petersburg with Celebrity, then yes, you will return to the ship at night. Hope this helps! We will be on the same itinerary a month after your cruise. Cheers:)
Fogfog Posted February 4, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 4, 2018 We used a private tour guide for St Pete--TOTALLY worth it Pre-arrange a taxi in Brugge-- you have to pay in cash. Get a group together on your roll call Talin--easy to see yourself and get a great local meal Copenhagen-- easy to do on your own.. long walk from pier Stockholm--easy to do on your own with water taxi Warm. (we did Berlin)... there is a group that does a local tour and brewery stop. Needs to be booked in adv Helsinki-- we were there on a Sunday--many reasonable restaurants in guidebooks were closed since it was a weekend. Saw the Rock church, rode the tram around town and went to the ship. Would only do it again with some tour plans
Rare roxievegas Posted February 5, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 5, 2018 we did this cruise in 2016. We also went in May. We had the best weather, it was hot, and in some ports, no coat was needed. They said the weather was never like this. We did a celebrity tour in St. Petersburg - at a cost of appox $320pp - it was a two day tour. early morning out and back in the evening, and then out again the next morning. We enjoyed the tour and as much as everyone says not to do the ship tours, we had a great group of people on the bus, everyone returned to the bus on time. We used the "hop on hop off" buses in all the other locations. You can buy the tickets for the buses once you get off the ship. credit card is accepted - cost is around $20 -$30pp. Because of the beautiful weather, we enjoyed riding around in the bus, getting off when we wanted and getting back on. Using the guide books, you can decide what stops you should see.
Ravensbourne1960 Posted February 5, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 5, 2018 We are going on Silhouette in May 18 to the Baltic’s. .. If 2 or 1.5 days do you come back to the ship in between days? The only port of call in the Baltics on this cruise is Tallinn. The bridges in St Petersburg are raised at night, so you won't be able to sleep under these. It's probably best to come back to the ship!
CNPGOLF Posted February 6, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 6, 2018 We used SPB Tours and they were fabulous. They give a discount for multiple tours. The two day tour in St Petersburg you should book as a private tour as you will see more. Sent from my iPad using Forums
