Buzzbea Posted March 14, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 14, 2018 We will be going on the Mayan Experience tour on Christmas Day. From what I understand, we will be in a family's home on the holiday, (holy day). Would it be appropriate or expected to offer a tip or a gift? cb at sea Posted March 14, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 14, 2018 If YOU were hosting an "experience"...would YOU expect a tip? I think not.
Buzzbea Posted March 14, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted March 14, 2018 No, but although I was not an official part of a tour, I have voluntarily hosted student visitors from other lands and they have brought gifts.
nybumpkin Posted March 14, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 14, 2018 Is this the "Mayan Experience" offered through Native Choice? If so, we did this tour some years back and the family we visited did pass the hat for tips.
Rala Posted March 15, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 15, 2018 I think a Christmas gift (monetary or otherwise) with a sincere thank you note and wrapped nicely would be totally appropriate. I think the hosting family probably does not have the resources that most of us posting here have and a gift would be most appreciated. donaldsc Posted March 18, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 18, 2018 We have done home visits on land tours. We always bring s small gift. Considering that it is Christmas, a gift is even more appropriate. DON
Buzzbea Posted March 18, 2018 Author #10 Share Posted March 18, 2018 As I look upon some of the lovely Christmas gifts that I have received over the years as a teacher, I also remember all the ones I've had to find storage room for. It's not because I don't appreciate the sentiments or the gift, but I simply don't have enough space for them all. After a few decades I really began to be grateful to families that gave donations to charity in my name or gift cards for books or school and office supplies. I think that if appropriate, then a tip in a pretty "Thank You" card or "Christmas" card may be more useful for the family and yet a bit touching more than one just tossed in a hat.
