Do you have to book directly with Royal to receive an upgrade call?

Recommended Posts

I keep hearing about the upgrade fairy offering deals, but have yet to receive a free or paid upgrade offer at 23 cruises.

All but one of them have been through a travel agent, which got me thinking that perhaps those that book directly with Royal may be first in line for these offers.

Can anyone confirm that they've gotten an upgrade call when booked through a travel agent?

I usually book on the phone with RC. They called me 3 days ago and said they had an Aqua Theater upgrade (wasn’t even advertised online), I happily accepted. They did the same for my July cruise, they called me for a Junior Suite upgrade.

I’m not sure about upgrades when using a travel agent though.

It took us 40+ cruises to get our one and only upgrade. From an interior to an oceanview on our second leg of a B2B. Bad thing was, they didn’t inform us until the first morning of our second cruise. We only had about 25 min to pack up and move to the new cabin. We originally had the same cabin for both cruises.

It's just easier for the cruise line to make the upgrade (upsell) offers first to those that booked directly through them or their personal planner/consultants. Mostly because the original booking is a direct contract between the cruise line and the customer.

Add in a travel agent/agency or reservation consolidator as having to be the middleman, it just makes for a possible tangle of phone calls before the passenger is informed of any upgrade. Because in these cases the passenger's primary contract is with that company they made their booking through pursuant to the separate contract the travel company has made with the cruise line regarding commissionable payment for taking the booking.

Over 30yrs cruising with and without TA only once got Upgrade and that wasn't on Royal. Never a call for "Upsell" Fairy...

Have received 4 upgrades and all bookings were with a TA. However, no emails or phone calls, just showed up on our booking on line.

By the way, if you are offered a higher cabin category and you have to pay for it, it is an up sell. If you don’t pay any additional, then it is an upgrade.

We have been on several cruises as well. Maybe you and I are on the “upgrade fairy’s. [emoji90]-list”

Same as us. We printed our docs and noticed that we’d been upgraded from a JS to a GS. What’s so funny about it is that we’d been cruising in GS’s but decided on a JS for this cruise because of the perfect location.

Cruise was booked via Casino Royale.

We have been upgraded when we used a TA. The Revenue Department called us directly and after we accepted, Royal Caribbean called our TA.
