Thanks The road has 620 curves. If you're prone to getting car sick make sure to take something prior to the drive.

Rare Hlitner Posted August 20, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 20, 2018 Guess my question is why excursions. We simply rented a car and drove the Hana Road. It is a long day but we enjoyed being by ourselves, going at our own pace, stopped when we pleased, etc etc. And we returned the back way (not normally suggested for rental cars) because the weather had been dry for a few days. It is a long day and better recommended for those staying on the island (we have vacationed there a few times) when time is not an issue. Heidi13 Posted August 20, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 20, 2018 Have never cruised to Hawaii, but have visited Maui many times. We always hire a car and every trip always drive the road to Hana. Probably have completed the trip about 10 - 12 times. We leave Kihei about 06:00 and return to the condo about 21:00, so it is a long day. We make many stops enroute and always go as far as the sacred pools. You can always complete the trip in a shorter period, but as others mentioned, it might only be 30 miles, but it is very slow going. I wouldn't consider an excursion, hire a car and self drive. evandbob Posted August 20, 2018 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2018 Hire a car and use a road guide such as "Hidden Maui" to help you decide where to stop. For us, the purpose was to see the waterfalls, pools, scenic views, etc. along the way rather than just complete the drive. Depending on when you go, you may want to bring a rain poncho, since you will encounter different biospheres along the way.
cb at sea Posted August 20, 2018 #8 Share Posted August 20, 2018 The road is twisty, but not THAT bad! However, it will take the entire day. Unless you are on a land-based vacation with many DAYS to fill, I'd skip this journey. The rest of Maui has gorgeous sights to see!
SuiteTraveler Posted August 20, 2018 #9 Share Posted August 20, 2018 I would hate for you to go to Maui and miss seeing Lahaina or the Haleakala national park or snorkeling at Molkini! The road to Hana is slow going and nice, but there is so much else to see in Maui.
