How rough are those Seas?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading a lot of reviews lately of some rough seas. We'll be sailing to the Bahamas, and I was wondering how its looking.

Any recent cruisers out there that can give me some first-hand advice? MY daughter cruised a few years back and was sick for the first day, so I'm hoping this time will be better.

thanks!

The weather is unpredictable as are the seas. There is a website that I'm trying to find at the moment that you can click on ocean bouys that will give you the current conditions. When I find it I'll post.

Chris - I guess my brain is foggy at the moment. Weather is not the only thing that can cause rough seas is what I was trying to say.

And if you *do* suffer an attack of Mal de Mer, you can always modify the lyrics to Peter, Paul & Mary's Leavin' on a Jet Plane:

Heavin' off a Cruise Ship

The barf bag is out I'm ready to hurl

I suffer here propped up by the rail

I hate to wake you up to ease my plight

But my gut is wrenchin' and it's nearly torn

The doctor's waitin' at the clinic'c door

Already I'm so seasick I could die

Chorus:

So lead me and talk for me

Tell me he'll prescribe for me

Show me 'cause I don't know where to go

'Cause I'm heavin' off a cruise ship

Don't know where the boat's clinic is

Oh no, I have to blow

There's to many steps I'm goin' down

So many turns I've turned around

I tell you now, I don't know a thing

Every pace I pace, I heave and puke

Every step I step, I greive and puke

When I get there, I'll need some dramamine

(Repeat Chorus)

Now the Doc has come to see me

One quick look he seems to freeze

Blood shot eyes and pasty face

Doc quickly prescribes some drugs

Now I won't have to heave so much

About this time, Any price I'll pay

(Repeat Chorus)

Although, I'm not prone to seasickness, I always take Dramamine II out of habit. This is the less drowsy formula. It can't hurt. I have been on worse seas on a fishing boat in the Atlantic of the Jersey coast during winter. The Caribbean is a bit different and with todays stabilizers and the size of the ships today, well, there is little movement. The only place I've ever felt movement is at the crap table in the casino .....

We just got off of the Triumph--and the seas were fairly rough all week. This was our first March cruise. Usually--we cruise in October....so, figuring October is hurricane season--and March is not--I was surprised at how much rougher the seas were.

So...I have a theory. (tee-hee) I wondered if maybe, the reason the seas were rougher in March had more to do with where the jet stream is??? I wondered if in the summer--when it's high up in Canada, if the seas are a little smoother (providing you're not in a hurricane)???

I am curious as to the smoothest time of the year in the Caribbean. We don't suffer from 'starboard hurling' or 'port blowing' either LOL! But, I want to treat my parents to a cruise. My mom is afraid of being seasick...but, the last cruise she took was the Princess Italia in 1972, a ship that was 12,000 tons (a lifeboat in today's standards)....and she cruised down the Mexican Riviera (sp?) in June.

When IS the most likely time of smooth seas? Any multi time of year cruisers out there that would have some kind of an opinion on that? I realize that weather is basically unpredictable...but, there are certain times of the year--where certain weather patterns are more likely. I'm not going to get all grumbly if somebody is wrong--just asking opinions.

Our first cruise was on the Fantasy in July 2002. We never felt the boat move. We were just on the March 26 sailing of the Miracle and had 60+ mph winds. There were a lot of seasick people. Our stateroom was on Panorama Aft. We got rocked to sleep every night!

I have told this story a few times on this board when it comes to rough seas but what the heck - you may not have heard this. When I was on the USS Boston (CAG-1), there was a gage that looks like an up side down clock and on it is a pendulum that goes either 90 degrees to the right (starboard) or 90 degrees to the left (Port). It tells you exactly how rough the seas are. When we went 15 degrees to starboard, you know you would have to go about 12 degress to Port and so on until the sway stopped. On either end, however, is a red zone. Don't go there! If you do, that means the smoke stack has entered the water and the ship is not going to right itself. During WW11, some Destroyers hit the red zone during a hurricane and were lost. This same gage is located on every cruise ship.

On the Boston, we never did reach the red zone but by golly we did come close. Now that is rough. All those stories about cruise ships with rough seas is just fluff. Cruise ships put out a couple of enormous fins that can really reduce the sway from the waves. Some times, however, the Captain may need to make some speed and they will reduce the amount of fin entering the water to reduce drag. Then it may get a bit bouncy and that is why some people cruise in a 40 mile wind and get sick while on other cruises they do not. In any event, just be glad you are not on one of those old Destroyers without the fin.

First cruise was in December and the waters were ROUGH! Swore on the last night I'd never cruise again. Like childbirth, those memories faded quickly because six months later, I cruised with DH in June. Water was perfect, as was my last cruise in September. This year scheduled to do Eastern on the Glory in August. Just from my own track record, I'll continue to cruise in the summer months.

Our first cruise was the Imagination 8-03. We never felt the ship move. We just did the Elation on 3-21, and we never stopped rocking! It was so rough! There were a few nights they blocked the top deck due to high winds. I think next time we'll do a summer cruise again.

Is it me, or is this year quite extreme weather-wise on land and at sea? We have been getting unusual amounts of wind, rain, even snow predictions. Just wondering if anyone else notices these weather conditions in their areas?
