Carnival Liberty - Muster Drill Nightmare

I never knew there is a special needs option for muster drills!  This is great information.  I am very sensitive to fragrances which will trigger a major asthma attack.  That's why, regardless of indoor or outdoor drills, I bring a mask and my inhaler with me to muster. 

 

As an experienced disaster management trainer and volunteer, I can report how vitally important these drills are for both crew and passengers.   I pay close attention on every cruise.

We sailed the Liberty in September and November 2016.  They were the worst muster drills we ever had in over 60 cruises.  When I spoke to the GS manager about it, he said they had to handle it that way because of the class of ship.  I call BS on that as the Valor is the same class of ship and we had outside drills, but they only lasted about 20 minutes on our cruises in November 2017 and September 2018.  And, I don't remember our muster drills on our 3 Freedom cruises being anything like the debacle on the Liberty. 

 

 I was especially rankled on the Liberty when I advised Miami the week before that I  had a sprained ankle and needed to be on the list for the  handicap drill, and I would need assistance getting down the stairs in the event of emergency.  They assured me that the ship had been notified.  When I boarded I went to GS to inquire where I was to go for the muster drill and they refused to tell me.   About 30 minutes in to the drill my foot and ankle were grossly swollen and turning blue where the circulation  was being cut off above and below the ace bandage.  The guy running the drill at our muster station took pity and escorted me inside so I could put my foot up.  I spent most of that cruise in bed with my foot iced and elevated.  I could barely walk at all because of the drill.  I was angry because up until the drill my recovery was coming along quite well and I had been advised I could put weight on my foot.  I don't think the doctor envisioned one of those Liberty muster drills!

 

I don't see any reason why they can't make the muster stations the showroom, or dining rooms, like they do on the bigger ships.  Although, they would have to change the signage on every cabin door, and all the signs pointing to the Muster Stations in the public areas.  That would cost a bundle to do it for all the Conquest Class ships.

On my liberty cruise in June, it wasn't that hot outside but people were late. Thusly delaying the inevitable.

 

Get there on time, get it done and go about your business.

I agree, the outdoor Muster drills are awful. On Dream class and above, they are held indoors. I am already dreading the outdoor drill on our next cruise. In late August. In New Orleans. 🤢 I'm bringing my small mister fan that I use in my group fit classes and at Disney. Hoping it helps.

Again, reference post #5.  This is not a decision made by the cruise line, it is a legal requirement per SOLAS to have the muster location as close to the lifeboats as feasible.  If it cannot be accommodated at the boat locations, then it can be done at another location, provided that location is proven to have all the requirements for a muster station, not just that it is indoors.  Muster station location, as required by law, does not take passenger comfort into consideration, and that is not why some ships do it indoors, as it is designed for life saving not lifestyle.

While I agree about the serving of alcohol, there are far more passengers whose sense of entitlement, self-centeredness, and obliviousness to their own or other's safety is manifestly evident even without alcohol.

Agree, that ugly “it is my vacation and I will do whatever I want, when I want” attitude.  Musters, possibly the most important safety item for everyone to know has become an elongated affair that by the time the briefing takes place half of the cruisers have def lost focus.  Carnival needs to find a way to solve this.
