Would this power strip be allowed?

Nothing out of the ordinary - not the surge protecting device the droids are looking for ! LOL !

No obvious circuit breaker - simply an on and off switch - square design - not the usual expected

rectangle.

Take it with you and if challenged (ah er confiscated) demand that the ships electrician check it out.

Probably won't happen best place would be in your carry-on bag - the hired thug rent-a-security agents

are more concerned with beverages - water and alcohol than electronics.

I like the compact design - Oh and more power to you !

Just IMHO, looks like a neat extension but to "semi" trained ship (embarkation port, maybe not) security doing screening, this "might" still looked like something with surge protection circuit on it - tip off to them, is the "on/off" switch (easily mistaken for a reset switch function)  It has a FCC/RoHS compliant "stamping" but no UL certification on it nor anything about "Carnival" cruise lines approved ... although you are sailing NCL with this one.   Chengkp75, our "resident" NCL engineer can probably address this question with a more definitive opinion.  However, if you pack this as a carry-on item when boarding, it will probably slide under the radar - avoid tossing into any checked luggage for port-to-ship transfer for getting flagged.

The total USB output is just 3A in total or 6A (2.4A per port) thus 2.4A x 2 plus 1.2A max on the 3rd port, which might be inadequate, except for older smartphone & iPad mini's alike.  Our LG/Nexus and newer Motorola with fast/turbo charging draw up to 3A each and will under-perform at a slower rate.

Why not use/pickup a 4 port USB charging adapter instead (Anker is the brand we used) and take a 6' and 10' USB extension cord along) ... like this (updated) one  or this one with an extension cord.

Based on the product information, it seems like it should be fine for a cruise.....

  • Cruise Travel/Dorm Room Accessories - NO surge protection, it’s definitely a must have cruise ship accessories and a convenient bedside/nightstand charging station for college dorm room. Compact and lightweight to fit into luggage and briefcases during your trip outside.

zitsky - yes, plenty of room to plug in/around - both mid-sized Gem/Jewel/Dawn class ships as well as BA/+ class ships, on Breakaways before & most recently on the Escape - the Anker is certified for both 110v and 220v usage (auto-voltage sensing) and I just plug mine into the less used 220 outlet.

P.S.  Nowadays, I pack both a 10' and 6' USB extension cable ... combined together, for almost 20' reach from the closest electrical outlet to a single bedside device for charging/use, or 2x 10' + reach.  Not all the "older" BA ships upgraded their bedside LED lamps with USB charging port - and, not sure about its output in amps.

Couple of points.  It seems like the product the OP has linked would be permissible, but I've been bitten by Amazon advertising before.  The real key is the printing on the back of the device, which does not mention a "VPR" or Voltage Protection Rating, which is a measure of surge protection.  And for "two wheels", even though it claims to be "cruise compatible", that is not always the case.  There is a product for sale on Amazon by "Cruise Only", that has a multiple power outlet/USB port device that they claim is "cruise compliant" and "non-surge protected", in the ad copy, but if you look at their own photos of the back of the device, it lists a VPR rating.  One CC member contacted them about this, and they claim the "photo is incorrect" and "will be changed", well, this was over a year ago, and the photo is still there.  And, I've found things that claim surge protection that aren't, so don't trust third party advertising copy like Amazon, to get the real information you have to take the time and effort to contact the manufacturer and get their specifications, and even then it is difficult.

Also, surge protection does not have any "reset" function, it is self-regulating.  When the voltage gets above the VPR, the semi-conductors shunt power to ground, and when the voltage goes below the VPR, the semi-conductors no longer conduct power to ground.  The on/off switch on most power strips is a "circuit breaker", which limits current, just like the breakers in your home, not voltage like a surge protector does.

But, yes, as mking does, I recommend a simple multi-USB hub, that has a two prong plug (nearly all "pure" USB hubs (no power outlets) have a two prong plug), so quite visibly it cannot be surge protected, and a simple three-way outlet splitter for more power outlets.  Use the 220v outlet as mking does for the USB hub.

That's true. You never know what something is when you order it until you have it in your hand.

Good advice EXCEPT REQUEST that it be check don't DEMAND anything.  No one likes it when a person DEMANDS that they do something.  Then again based on your "thug" comment I see that with your attitude you probably coudl not care less.  Good pun with the last line!
