Please tell me about SIM cards

Verizon charges $10 for each 24 hour period the phone is used not every time you turn it on.  So from the time you make the first text, call, internet search until 24 hours later you’re covered.  We are leaning toward doing this. The DH used it in China and worked well.

They also have a monthly plan but afraid we’d go over it for $70.

We've also downloaded maps etc. to be used off line.  Google apps for travel with android or I phones and that will give you some ideas.   City maps to go, city mapper and xe currency are ones we plan to use.

Thanks for the info.  That looks like a suitable choice for my needs.   I think I will go with it.  I won't be able to wait for your report in May, as I leave April 24.   I will report after I return May 5.

update

well the phone connected to the local phone suppliers in France and UK

but have not needed to call anyone yet  lol

maybe tomorrow

but it did find the cell providers

Thanks for the update.  I have been reading up on the format of UK phone numbers and which digits to dial when in the country, as well as the country code to call the US. I chuckle that I may end up not actually using it at all - but even so, I will be glad I have it for unforeseen circumstances.

Enjoy your trip!

yes  we have it if we need it

we used the US number in NYC  to get the location of the car service pick up

it seemed to take a few minutes like 10  to find a provider

This is all pretty standard stuff, so you may find the information helpful for most places around the world.

I checked the phone today in UK

my number was 10 digits after  the 44  code

but you need to have 11  so add a 0 before your number after the 44 code

the number I had  was 762  so need to the zero   0762

hope that helps

in the UK you do not need to dial the 44

If you have to dial the 44 you don't use the zero. If you don't dial 44 you need the zero.

Thank you for the detailed information.   One more question, since I bought the same SIM card from the same company that you did.  How do I check my balance?  The FAQ on their web site says I can check it from my phone, but it doesn't say how.  I am probably missing something obvious, but I haven't figured out how to do that.

Thanks.

from the USA  dial 187

from Europe  dial  *11* 187#

it was on page 5 (I think of the paperwork ) that I got with the phone/sim

As I suspected, I missed something obvious, like reading the documentation LOL!    Many thanks for your help.

I had two trips to Europe before I had a cell phone - a simpler era, but there is no going back!  😄

Using the dataroam by Cellhire SIM card in my wife's phone in London right now.  It's working great.

She cannot call via wifi to the US but I can on my phone that is tethered to hers.

The card is available on Amazon here.  It's 4 GB for up to 60 days.

I'm using 2 Samsung Galaxy S9's that were purchased through Comcast Mobile (uses Verizon cell network).  Before leaving home  I put in the dataroam SIM to make sure I could unlock the phones.  Good thing I did because  they gave me the wrong ones the first time.

Be sure to read all of the instructions to set up and enable it.

The only downside is that I can't check on how much data I have left.
