farkell Posted May 28, 2019 #6 Share Posted May 28, 2019 (edited) We just got back from Bermuda, on the Gem, May 24th. The blended drinks, ie: Bushwacker, Strawberry daquiri, Pina Colata, etc all came with paper straws. They lasted long enough to finish the drink. I'm on the Gem as we speak (still docked in Bermuda) and my frozen drinks in the casino / Great Outdoors and Bloody Mary's with breakfast in Moderno came with plastic. Maybe different at each bar. Sand and Seas Posted May 28, 2019 #9 Share Posted May 28, 2019 Interesting news on the straws. I didn't like the paper straws on Bliss & Breakaway on our cruises earlier this year. They were too long for most glasses and they kind of added a strange taste to the BBCs. I was planning on bringing my own for our Gem cruise in August. 7 minutes ago, esm54687 said: I'm on the Gem as we speak (still docked in Bermuda) and my frozen drinks in the casino / Great Outdoors and Bloody Mary's with breakfast in Moderno came with plastic. I asked if I have been getting these all along and she said yes...... so, I stand corrected and have to give NCL credit for purchasing "plastic like" paper straws. Sorry for the confusion

IMNOFUN Posted May 28, 2019 #12 Share Posted May 28, 2019 On our last cruise, straws disappeared mid-voyage. I guess when the plastic straw issue came up they just took them all away. I asked to have a spoon with my Bushwhacker. Since then, I bought a nice package of steel straws. 2 each of 8.5 bent and straight, 2 each of 10.5 bent and straight, 1 larger diameter (for milkshakes?), and three cleaning brushes. I tested on one a well-iced Bloody Mary and didn't freeze my lips, so I'm happy to forgo plastic straws for the environment. If you've seen the picture of the sea tortoise with a plastic straw jammed up his nose, you might also decide it's time for the plastic to go away. Can't even recycle them anymore. Barb Nahoumi Posted May 28, 2019 #13 Share Posted May 28, 2019 When my friend ordered a mixed drink on the Gem last week, she said that they gave her a heavy paper straw. All I had was wine, so no straw for me.
npater Posted May 29, 2019 #14 Share Posted May 29, 2019 We were on the Escape and they automatically gave you a paper straw. Didn’t have to ask and the straws were fine

But wait,,,, now available in the gift shop (selling out during the cruise),,,
yearsofcruising Posted May 30, 2019 #17 Share Posted May 30, 2019 Gem cruise : impossible to finish a cold Mudslide by the pool before the paper straws cave in ! No way to suck those thick ice-cold mudslides thru those straws !!

Can't even recycle them anymore. Actually we never could recycle plastic straws. But that didn't stop people from stuffing them in to their recycling bins. The only plastics that can be recycled are the specific items with the recycle triangle emblem embossed on it, along with the number inside the triangle telling you how many times it has left to be recycled, which should cause you to consider reusing or stop buying that item. The Michigan Recycling Coalition has begun a new TV ad campaign aimed at educating people at what they're doing horribly wrong at the recycling bin. Because if states can't get it right, the industries that buy those resources are going to stop buying them and recycling won't even be an option to keep plastics out of our landfills and oceans anymore. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/michigan/articles/2019-06-24/michigan-launches-2m-education-campaign-to-boost-recycling

It signified the type of plastic and how recyclable it was, (the lower number the better) https://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/recycling-by-the-numbers.html
