Bar Harbor missed

Don't know the percentage, but it is one of the most missed ports on a NE cruise since the ships have to tender.  At least, that's what we were told by the Anthem's captain at his talk on our cruise last September.  We had a good chance of not making port last year, and only knew the morning of that we were going to the port.  Bar Harbor had gale force winds the night before, and the timing of when those ended was part of the decision-making.

We missed St John's last Oct due to weather, but it was related to how narrow the inlet is to get to the bay.  Bar Harbor was much easier and is a very short tender ride.    But, like any tender port, wind and waves make all the difference.

In October 2015, we were on RCI's Brilliance of the Sea and we got "fogged" out of Bar Harbor. The fog was so thick, it was much too dangerous to try to use tender boats because they did not have proper radar, and after about 2 hours of waiting off shore for the fog to lift, the captain made the tough decision to skip Bar Harbor and head out to sea for a sea day.

Although it was the correct decision, all the passengers were extremely disappointed because Bar Harbor is the "signature" port of the New England/Canadian itinerary. The crew at the time told us that Bar Harbor has a high "cancel" rate due to fog, winds, rough seas etc. I hope to make it there another time.

Good luck to you. Hopefully you'll have no issues.

Depends on the cruise line.  Last year we skipped Bar Harbor on Celebrity while Norwegian didn't.  Truthfully, the weather was so wet and gloomy it wouldn't have been and enjoyable day anyway.  In our case we had a sea day but managed to arrive and dock in Quebec the afternoon before our scheduled next morning arrival.  That worked out great as the entire sail into the city was during the daylight and the colors were magnificent.

For those of you who were unable to port in Bar Harbor, did your cruise go to a different port or did you just spend an extra day at sea?  Thanks all!

We had a sea day. SOOO disappointed.  But Safety first...  We are booked next year again , Bar Harbor has been taken off our itinerary. So sad but they have added  St.John.  So I guess that is better than another sea day and no extra port.

I still would love to go to Bar Harbor. Checked into renting a car out of Boston or flying into Banger. Way to expensive.
