There's no morning "grace period". Not that I'm a morning person anyway, but at least in spring or fall you get that little lift when you open the door and feel the cooler air. I hear ‘ya. We are fortunate that it does cool down at night and early mornings can be nice. However, that doesn’t happen when the days are hot as they are right now. We are also fortunate that we don’t have the humidity like you do.
slidergirl Posted July 19, 2022 Author #5802 Share Posted July 19, 2022 I’m on the train now from Lyon to Bologna. It’s my relax day since it will take most of the day. I paid for Executive class so I’d have a big comfy seat and 3 meals. Basically the same time and price a flight would have been. I couldn’t smell the lavender until I stopped and got out of the car. Tons of bees, of course. Since I am allergic to the 🐝, I stayed at the start of the rows and didn’t venture in. The drive up to Lyon was a hot one. Stopped at Ponte du Garde for a look (too hot to do much more). Lots of people playing in the water. As I was l leaving, 2 buses of older folks came in, probably from a river boat. Most of them looked like they wouldn’t be able to make the unshaded walk down to the Ponte, especially in 99 degrees. Cynthia - I was so tired when I got to Lyon I didn’t get out to see anything. The restaurant at the hotel had a nice menu so I stayed there. You’d like the hotel Globe et Cecil. My single room was larger than the cabin on the barge! A nice little quirky place .

Rare Lois R Posted July 19, 2022 #5804 Share Posted July 19, 2022 I was watching the news/weather this morning...........the UK hit a high temp today for as long as they have keeping records😲...........and the land in Italy looks like it is drying up to nothing☹️ I guess living in Florida gives me some perspective. When it gets unbearably hot, I just stay home in the air conditioning. I know many places don't have a/c..................
jhsocal Posted July 19, 2022 #5805 Share Posted July 19, 2022 Purduemom, thank you for the answers.Expect i will be attending a memorial service in August where highs hit 110-116 degrees. Church will have a,c., but you melt in the car before ac has an effect. Will be in Palm Springs. Leaning toward a fairly dressy sun dress that has a jacket. At least it will not be humid.
purduemom1 Posted July 20, 2022 #5806 Share Posted July 20, 2022 Kat, thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Interesting that people are allowed to enter the lavender fields. When we visited the tulip fields outside of Amsterdam, signs were posted sating keep out of the fields to protect the tulips from disease. I guess lavender must be hardier than tulips? This heat wave seems to be everywhere. You are right . Lois, living where a/c is common place is a blessing. Watched a report last night about the issues London is having because of the heat. They showed someone giving water to one of the Queen’s Guards. Can’t imagine how uncomfortable he must have been standing for hours in the uniform. OOTD once again just the coolest cloths that I could pull out of the closet. Minimum make up..

Ponte du Gard, be still my heart! I visited it on one of my archaeological tours and it was also sweltering though I think only low 90s that day. The lecturer (one of the most knowledgeable I've ever had) walked us through the aqueduct, pointing out Roman graffiti from the soldiers/engineers who built it and the caretakers who had to keep the channels clean and the piers repaired. As we stood in the middle of the span, it was one of those surreal moments I'll always remember. Sorry you didn't get to experience much of Lyon but very glad to hear that the hotel worked for you,
purduemom1 Posted July 20, 2022 #5808 Share Posted July 20, 2022 jhsocal, Palm Springs in August wow! Your outfit sounds like a good plan. You know, to me it seems that when it goes over 100 degrees or so, it’s just hot and as long as I don’t need to be outdoors for an extended period of time, I can manage. As you said it won’t be humid and a/c should be everywhere indoors. You could take a folding fan although that might just creat a lot of hot air. On the other hand, if you are staying overnight in a hotel, I bet the rates will be a bargain-lol! Sharon
slidergirl Posted July 20, 2022 Author #5809 Share Posted July 20, 2022 Re the lavender fields: I guess farmers will allow folks to go in the fields until it is abused. I was going to take a photo of all the people in the first field. I guess these folks don’t worry about bees. I forgot to mention the wonderful mix of women on the barge. My roommate and I were the only 2 solos. 2 friends from Chicago who were never seen without a glass of wine. A couple from Los Angeles who married the first day it was legal in CA. 2 longtime friends from Oxnard, CA who always take a trip together. 2 sisters, 1 who was 93 years old! She out walked and out biked everyone. I only hope that I am that vigorous at that age! It’s a kind of down day. Staying out of the heat and going out later. Did I mention that the ladies, started by the Chicago 2, called our Captain “Captain McDreamiest”? A play on Dr. McDreamy on that tv hospital show. No trip pics today so I figured I’d post this. What do you think?
Rare Lois R Posted July 20, 2022 #5810 Share Posted July 20, 2022 Good morning, Kat, sounds like a very fun group of people🙂 and that show is Grey's Anatomy. Your Capt looks hotter than the Dr😀

I go for the Nordic looks, had a bit of a crush going on the long-time Swedish bachelor captain for the Aegean Odyssey -- eventually got to sit next to him at dinner on about cruise #6. Shortly after that he got married, sadly not to me. Hard to find a good pic of him, he was notoriously camera shy.
purduemom1 Posted July 20, 2022 #5812 Share Posted July 20, 2022 Two “hotties”-great way to start another hot day:). Thanks for sharing. Hearing news reports of not only the heat but many fires in Europe. Kat, have the fires impacted your plans? The news really doesn’t give location details where fires are burning. slidergirl Posted July 21, 2022 Author #5813 Share Posted July 21, 2022 That’s why they called him “McDreamiest”. I knew the show but totally lost the name. He was really nice. Watched the jousting and fireworks with us. Would come out and talk with us when we were hanging out on the main deck aft patio. It’s just him and his deckhand, Thomas, so he was always very hands on with maintenance and such. Barges are very intimate so you interact with everyone in a casual manner. The fires aren’t affecting me. I did just see that a few have popped up in Tuscany. The heat and fires are terrible. Planes can’t fly in places because the runways are melting (!), trains having issues because rails are buckling. Heard that about Great Britain. The heat is just oppressive for me. Can only go so long before I go back to the hotel. What I noticed today was one of the few wearing a hat. Weird. My day bag gets rather heavy with the water I carry but it’s a necessity. Cynthia - I saw a message today that, due to major luggage issues at Schiopol that only carry on will be allowed on flights. Yikes! That’s going to put a kink in a lot of people’s vacation plans!!! some random pics from Bologna. No food porn yet. But one of the most interesting fountain porn. Anatomically correct guy, ladies with water flowing out the boobs….
purduemom1 Posted July 22, 2022 #5814 Share Posted July 22, 2022 That’s quite the fountain! Heard about the damage that the high heat is causing for transportation. As for the checked luggage situation, carry on only at least guarantees that you will have what you need but may have to give up multiple clothing options. Better than not having any choices but your travel outfit. I just wonder how all those carry ons will fit in overheads.
purduemom1 Posted July 22, 2022 #5815 Share Posted July 22, 2022 Since this topic discusses clothing along with many other things, I thought I’d post about my trip to Costco yesterday. It’s106 here and yet winter clothing choices were on display along with the summer stuff. Well, I couldn’t resist and bought 2 32 degrees warm vests. Felt a bit ridiculous trying them on but then realized that 2 other women were doing the same. I’m thinking that I will return one of the vests. I really don’t need 2 even though they were only $13.99. Also bought a long sleeve top. It’s a small black and cream print. Along with our other purchases, I had another OMG moment. OOTD again, whatever I can find that is cool and comfortable. Not going anywhere so minimal make up. Sharon

I've been conditioned all my life to start thinking about fall and "back to school" (HA) clothing in late July/early August. I remember back in the day when I used to wait for the August issues of fashion magazines to show up on news stands.... And I am also guilty -- Eileen Fisher is having an online sale and they have some pretty good deals on what I consider basics for me for work and travel, so I put in an order -- we'll see how much of it I keep.
slidergirl Posted July 22, 2022 Author #5817 Share Posted July 22, 2022 102 today at the Ferrari Museum. Good thing I could dawdle in there. I found the balsamic vinegar museum that Bennybear mentioned. It was interesting and came with a sampling of a 12 and 25 year old vinegars. I could really tell the difference in the aging. I could smell the balsamic outside 2 doors down. I could work in that building forever. The women who work there told me to walk down the block to a gelateria that has a balsamic gelato. And, if she had it to pair with the ricotta, honey and nuts. OMG!! Both were sooooo good, especially on this 102 day. I didn’t have the Euros to do a drive around Maranello in a Ferrari, but I did get to sit in one. I almost couldn’t get out of it- it sits even lower than my TT did! Trying to decide what to do tomorrow since it is going to be even hotter. Go up Faena and Volpe and do some ceramics shopping or head to Ravenna and dip my feet in the Adriatic. I will decide at breakfast tomorrow.
slidergirl Posted July 22, 2022 Author #5818 Share Posted July 22, 2022 On the clothes topic: I wanted to say that my Woolx sleeveless T-shirts are worth the money. Been wearing them except when I wear a dress. Love them! I brought the Bella sleeveless tunics - they are more like a slightly longer shirt, not a thigh- length tunic. Perfect with shorts and pants and overalls. And, they don’t stink when you’ve worn it all day in 100+ weather!!! I definitely recommend them if you need to buy for the Summer. The Faherty dress is another winner. Another worth the money when it’s 100+ degrees. So happy I bit the bullet and bought it.

I also felt a little ridiculous trying it on, but it was the perfect lightweight gray jacket for my fall trip. awhfy Posted July 23, 2022 #5825 Share Posted July 23, 2022 Ok, too funny, I also bought one of those 32 degree vests at Costco yesterday! My youngest granddaughter & I went school clothes shopping yesterday, I’m exhausted. This 14 year old has a definite idea on what she likes. Mom is a school teacher & laid out the rules, no midriff tops (not allowed in school), no short shorts (not allowed in school). We searched for tops & only found one that wasn’t a midriff top. We actually had the best luck for things she liked & met mom approval at Costco (talk about an OMG moment!!!)
