Rare MicCanberra Posted March 29, 2020 #51 Share Posted March 29, 2020 The WA and Commonwealth Governments are currently evacuating the Artania and the Vasco De Gama, for repatriation, quarantining and medical assistance depending on nationality and health, they can sort out the Zaandam once that is done. Rare MicCanberra Posted March 29, 2020 #52 Share Posted March 29, 2020 The Zaandam is by the panama canal, I go confused with the MSC ship, although there are some negotiations to get any Australians off the Zaandam and back home.
The_Big_M Posted March 29, 2020 #53 Share Posted March 29, 2020 Yeah, not related. Though in respect of Magnifica no need to wait for the others to be resolved before it is. Without cases they are simpler.

No more complicated for Magnifica than the others. And your second point is the issue, people valuing dollars above humanity. No need to waste it (as ScoMo is doing with the broad quarantine) but it's not an excuse to unnecessarily prioritise dollars above people either.
Pushka Posted March 29, 2020 #56 Share Posted March 29, 2020 A statistic released last Friday on the Composition of origins of Covid in Australia. 20% infections from USA and another 20% infections from Cruise ships. And the percentages reduced from there. Cruiselines cracked down on Citizens from China, then HK, then Iran, Korea, then Italy. Seems they needed to crack down in other areas too. FSG Posted March 29, 2020 #57 Share Posted March 29, 2020 Foreign ships, cruise or cargo, routinely dock in restricted areas for many reasons, including biosecurity and immigration reasons. So, it seems unreasonable that many major ports are unilaterally turning away, and not rendering humanitarian assistance, to cruise ships that have sick passengers. Admittedly, not all countries have unlimited resources, but rendering assistance for urgent cases, is surely a basic obligation.

Blackduck59 Posted March 29, 2020 #61 Share Posted March 29, 2020 It's good that Panama is relenting for Zaandam and Rotterdam but that still doesn't get them to a safe port to disembark yet. I hope wherever they do port they do it right and get the people off the ship. Don't do the Diamond Princess to them and don't do the Ruby Princess to the port. US ports are still open, for the moment anyway. They were trying to head to the US so I presume that's still the case and they should then be able to land (unless something changes by the time they get there). Rare MMDown Under Posted March 29, 2020 #63 Share Posted March 29, 2020 (edited) For those passengers who use social media, Captain Jonathan, in his blog, said a few words of encouragement to the crew of Zaandam and Rotterdam, who is assisting her, would do a power of good you tag #HALstrong Captain Jonathan is the Captain of Amsterdam. SeaDog-46 Posted March 30, 2020 #64 Share Posted March 30, 2020 Zaandam now entering Panama Canal for night passage - 21:00 Panama time. Those photos look like the old canal. The Zaamdam and the Rotterdam can fit through the old canal, although they are the maximum width.
