Off the beaten path hotels/areas near FCO and Civitavecchia

Our October 2020 Mediterranean/Israel cruise is now our October 2021 Mediterranean/Israel cruise. We are going to be doing 4 nights precruise in Rome. However, with the modified dates, we plan to stay for a extra day after the cruise ends. Instead of staying in Rome or Civitavecchia, are there any other towns and more specifically, hotels, that would be nice to stay a bit off the beaten path where we could still get to FCO within about an hour the next morning?

If you don't want to go back to Rome for that one night you might try the waterfront area of Fiumicino or Lido di Ostia, about fifteen minutes by cab from the airport.

More picturesque would be Santa Marinella (closer to Civitavecchia, about 45 minutes to one hour from the airport).

I would echo Euro-Cruiser's post regarding the town of Fiumcino.  It is actually a small seaside resort city located a few minutes from FCO.  Fiumcino has a beach and a walkway along the seawall that is quite attractive.  Across the street there are many restaurants, some of them quite good (and popular) with pretty reasonable prices, especially for seafood.   It has been a few years since we stayed in Fiumcino so I will not recommend a specific hotel or B&B but you can read lots of reviews online.  Also keep in mind that a side trip to nearby Ostia Antica is a great option for those who are interested in ruins/history.

We very much enjoyed Viterbo and the surrounding area.  We liked the Villa Lante and the amazing gardens, as well as the stunning Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola. So much to see and a reasonable under an hour drive to Civitavecchia.

Simple, rustic and definitely off the beaten track.

Discovered by accident.

As backpackers 15 years ago, we spent 2 days in Ostia. We also went to Tarquinia, about 30 minutes north from Civitavecchia. Tarquinia was one of the most ancient and important Etruscan cities. We visited several underground tombs and the good museum.

Another vote for Viterbo/Orvieto area.  We stayed in a wonderful B&B in a rural area outside Orvieto for five days and toured the area by car.   When we left we dropped the car and trained into Rome.   There are countless choices in Umbria and Tuscany that would permit you to return to Rome or Civ. in a few hours by train.  We did the same in Siena.  Stayed outside town at an agritoursimo for five nights and toured Tuscany.

Dropped the car and hopped on the train.

Another time we trained up the coast from Civ to Cinque Terre for five days.  The very last thing we wanted in Cinque Terre was a rental car.
