Barry Island is a popular tourist haunt. Also site of last Butlin's Holiday Camp built by its founder Billy Butlin. Who remembers Maplins in the TV show Hi-de-Hi?

My wife's cousin was born in Barry in 1925. The house is now a Chinese Restaurant, or was last time we were there. My wife's father's name was Glanffrwd - try wrapping your lips around that one.

That was why we were there. An overnight stop between the two heritage train trips.

 

We had a really nice meal at the Royal Sportsman pub. White onion and blue cheese soup for me followed by venison. Rolf had duck terrine followed by pork and leek bangers.

Wales is a great country, been through there a few times.  St.Davids up on the north west coast is great, as is Cardiff Castle. As they say...'There will be a welcome in the hillside.'
