Thanks for the clarification. I had a feeling this would be what had happened.  At the date of sailing you will still be undiagnosed.  In this instance if you speak with your GP and explain what has happened with the cancellation he/she should be able to confirm you could not travel as this was an intervention required in an emergency.  This should be sufficient to prove to Staysure that you were medically unfit to travel.

Could you confirm whether your policy with Staysure is still in place, have they threatened to cancel it or indeed have they automatically cancelled it due to the tests?  Unfortunately they are known to be rather trigger happy on cancellation in this type of situation.  However as you have been issued a claim form this is very positive news and hopefully relatively easy to sort.

Yes the policy is still active and I am in the process of making the claim, fingers crossed.

Excellent! Speak to your GP soonest and it really shouldn't be too difficult.  I'm fairly confident that as you have already declared your other conditions this won't be too arduous or long winded.  One word of caution (from current personal ongoing claims experience!) make sure your GP doesn't cut corners on completing their part of Staysure's enquiry form as this is the only area which can lead to delay with forms going backwards and forwards.  The good news is if all paperwork is completed correctly first time round Staysure are usually very good at deciding an outcome.  They did change their claim handling company fairly recently and there were reports of delays but the claims company has now taken on extra staff and settlements are returning to normal.

Do please keep us informed on how things are going and don't hesitate to ask if you need help on anything - everyone here are a pretty helpful and friendly bunch!

Meantime don't be a stranger and hopefully you will want to stay with us all.

Thank you for staying with us and giving more information. From my experience, if you get a letter from your GP stating you are unfit to travel due to a new condition which has surfaced so close to departure, I cannot imagine that any reputable insurance company would refuse payment.

All sorted! Just an hour or so after I had finally cancelled, I had a call from my GP with the news that the scan had not shown any thing serious, I had an infection that could be treated with antibiotics. So a quick call to P&O and they kindly uncancelled the trip. Then on to Staysure to notify them of the condition, and £10 for admin later we are back in business. Can I just say thankyou to P&O ( no longer disappointed) and a bigger thankyou to the NHS, from the emergency doctor on Tuesday night to my own GPs and the Churchill hospital for turning everything around in just three days.

Had a slightly similar situation recently. I have an annual policy with staysure. 4 weeks before cruise GP referred me for ultrasound scan and to specialist. 2 weeks before cruise had ultrasound, 10 days before cruise GP rang with results of scan, said I had fibroids, I went online and updated my policy which cost me £1.84 to amend.  After reading all of @Megabear2threads about insurance I started to panic a bit, although my GP effectively told me what was wrong, I still had a referral outstanding, anyway after a few sleepless nights worrying about if anything happened on my cruise, would insurance company use it as an excuse not to pay out for anything, I rang staysure 4 days before we sailed.  I explained the whole story that even though I had effectively had a diagnosis it wasn’t ‘signed off by specialist”   … They were very helpful and told me they would remove the fibroids from my pre existing conditions on policy pending sign off but that they would cover my other pre existing conditions (high Blood pressure being the one I was concerned about cover for).  They said once I had sign off to ring again and add to my conditions, but also as I was due to sail so soon they would cover for fibroids on that one trip. I was petrified that because it wasn’t diagnosed and signed off they would cancel my insurance.  Had a lovely cruise and hopefully will be able to close it all our before my next one 😀

I'm delighted it went well.  Your story is proof that if you do it right insurers do have a heart and are human.

Hope the next cruise is even more enjoyable and you get your medical condition sorted quickly as well.

Glad to hear this is sorted for you, enjoy your holiday.

BTW, do insurers reimburse the doctors fee for filling in the form/ providing a letter?

Our GP charged £95 to fill in a form for my daughter.

Luckily it never got that far, my GP rang me on Friday, the day before we sailed and gave me the all clear to travel and I asked him to not bother with filling in the form.
