Trust me with as much money the Cartel likely makes off cruises and tourism in general, tourist would not purposely be a target.  Politicians yes but tourists highly doubtful.   We spend 3 weeks there every January and have friends who stay 3 months.  We watch where we go and stay aware of our surroundings and have never felt fearful

Actually the majority of cartel-related business is in the tourist zones and not on back streets or in local neighborhoods. So tourists are at risk when caught-up in these events. You can be very aware of your surroundings and frequent only “safe” areas and be caught up in these violent activities.

This and another recent murder on the island was an assassination rather than a hit on a business. But the day-day activities of fighting other cartels and punishing business owners take place mostly in the tourist zones where the $$ is made.

We spend several months each year at our home outside Playa and have followed several assassinations (one real estate agent killed in front of his daughter down the street from our community), tourists injured in cartel-related shootings on 5th Ave, bullets sprayed from Uzi’s on the beach at a nearby “safe” resort…Not to mention the tourists killed in Tulum the last couple years.

 

Cartel-related violence has been much more evident on Coz the past year or so unfortunately…

We’ve enjoyed this area for 20+ years. But between the resurgence of cartel-related violenve along the Riviera Maya, and the unsustainable growth of traffic and new resorts, we just sold and will be traveling to safer areas of the Caribbean.

I "don't respectfully disagree." That was someone who doesn't live on the island. Hey, no deaths in the past couple of days! YAY!

I think you will be fine in the typical tourist areas. Yes, cartel activity has been more visible on Coz, at least from my following the news from Playa, but that was inevitable since the cartels follow the $$$$, and Coz is a very busy place. As most folks suggest, just use common sense wherever you are traveling. The odds of being involved in a shooting incident are very slim indeed…

 

Public shootings between cartel groups vying for a business, cartel shootings at businesses punishing owners for not falling in line, and mass decapitations have been occurring along the Riviera Maya from Cancun to Tulum, and are just a way of life here. Some will tell you that tourists are not affected because these events are occurring in neighborhoods outside the tourist areas. But that is obviously incorrect - the cartels’ activity is centered in the tourist areas where the $$$$ is. Tourists have had to flee gunfire on beaches and in restaurants and bars, and well-known professional people have been assassinated in public places in broad daylight.

 

But again that is happening primarily in the RM, and thousands of tourists flock here everyday…Just follow the local news outlets here for the current situation, and you may want to follow the TripAdvisor Coz forum for more current feedback from residents and frequent visitors if you are overly concerned…

Here's the questions cruise visitors need to ask:

1) Were any of these homicides tourist?

2) Did they occur in tourist areas/resorts?

3) Did they occur during daylight hours?

If the answer is NO, then, outside of being ever vigilant, as you should be where ever you go, you should have no concerns.

13 homicides is probably a weekend's worth in Chicago.

Yes from our perspective, and the perspective of friends living there, it’s like Coz is on the cusp of joining Cancun, Playa, and Tulum (which has seen a sharp rise in cartel activities, again following the $$$$) as cartel hotspots. But if you follow the forum I mentioned it is definitely not THE topic of discussion as in the other areas. 
 

So yes, knowledge is power, but understand although the cartels are indeed active, their targets are businesses and politicians and others who oppose them. There are thousands of other day visitors on the island each day who do not have that knowledge…
