Do they still have the old plastic cards or is everything the Medallion now?

If you throw your medallion overboard, are they going to call a muster because they think you have jumped or fell off the ship?

I know this post is mostly in jest but ...

Muster calls are for when there's a ship emergency that may put the ship and its passengers and crew in danger. Man Over Board (MOB) procedures do not require a muster call.

Before the medallion, many ships had installed video surveillance covering all aspects of the ship where someone could go overboard. I don't know what the latest procedure is given there are least now two automated methods to detect MOB as well as the original method where someone actually sees someone go over.

Then, there's the worst method and I've read news reports of this one. A family member or friend reports someone missing, possibly hours after the event. Sad as none of the other methods worked.

Yes, it was in jest, but if they think a passenger is overboard because the medallion says so, wouldn't they need a muster to count the passengers to account for all of them? The ship in danger is not the only reason a muster may be warranted.

You are assuming that Medallions are constantly monitored, which is not the case.

Still at some point wouldn't they notice that someone's medallion is showing that he or she has gone overboard?

No, because the Medallion only has a short range, so would just not register. And as a Medallion with a dead battery also does not register,  there would be no automatic conclusion that someone has gone overbiard.

I hate the advertising. If you spend time in the shop they are harvesting the information. I would assume they don't harvest marketing info from cameras but only go to watch if something happens unlike the medallion which is used to market. Why does anyone need to know how much time someone spends in the laundromat? The bathroom? Sitting on deck? Because they want to see how to get more revenue. I don't need to  see myself pop up on a screen at the elevator. It feels invasive, it's not a conspiracy theory at all.

Just so you know… The photo that you use doesn’t have to be a photo of you.  Mine is a photo of my Medallion bracelet.  I do not pop up on a screen and no one knows that is mine if they are standing near me.

Having used a cruise card for countless cruises -- with ample time spent in the casino and bars -- I'm actually eager to see how the medallion will improve my experience as I'm assuming it will.

Me?  I'll just put it my pocket, but it appears kind of small, so I guess I'll have to attach the lanyard so it doesn't fall out of said pocket so easily.

The photo the staff sees on their screens is of you.

The photo the public sees on public screens is whatever you wanted it to be.

OK. But if the battery goes dead, I assume it will not open the cabin door, correct? How then do you get into your cabin?

You go to reception  and get a new Medallion. Simples !

Gee, I have seen posts that tout the medallion for unlocking and opening the door when their hands are full, but no one mentions it does not work as the battery might go dead and you now have to go  (and probably wait on a line) to get into your room with your hands full. 🤦‍♂️

As far as I know, no one has ever had a battery run out on a cruise card. 😉

To be fair, we are talking about a very, very few instances. And cruise cards also need replacing at times so no difference between the Medallion and the card in that respect.

When they had magnetic stripes, people often found they had accidentally wiped the info by having the card too near a magnet such as one in a purse enclosure.

Based on posts on Cruise Critic, many more people experienced having to replace a demagnetized cruise card and people are having to replace a Medallion because of a dead battery.

Cruise staff have reported that their Medallions get replaced about once a month so that they can be replaced before the batteries die.

Thank you for that. Ontgeweb does seem to anti-medallions for no apparent reason. I wonder if he was the same when cruise cards replaced cabin keys ?

My wife and I use these clips. They are made for Apple Air Tags which are the same size as the Medallion. The Medallion fits extremely snugly into the clip so there is no chance of it falling out. You can find the clips HERE and they come in 10 different colors. They are also "buy 2 get 1 free".

If there is no difference, why the extravagant claims in princess ads concerning the greatness of the medallion?

I’ve never had a battery run out on my medallion, but I have had a Cruise Card not work because it was demagnetized.

The key words are in red in the wowzz post.

Referring just to the need to replace cards.

The first 5 words of your post are WHEN THEY HAD MAGNETIC STRIPES.

I guess batteries will stop dying on medallions when they no longer have batteries.

There is the creepy factor of it all.
Disney went through the same things with their magic bands.  Your Space Mountain photo is automatically added to your account because it knew which car you were in.  Great.  Mickey Mouse or some random cast member greets your kid by name. Perhaps creepy.

Not true.  They have lanyards and many other ways people can attach Medallions to carry them effortlessly.  They are light weight and about the size of a quarter maybe  You do not have to take it out at all to open a door, order a drink or other things.  I am a believer in do not knock something if you have not tried it.  They are here to stay.

Personally, I find the medallions annoying to carry.  I haven't worn a watch in 25+ years and certainly won't pay for a holder that goes on my wrist.  Lanyards don't make a lot of sense (why does something that you theoretically never need to present to anyone need to be THAT handy?)  So both mine and my DWs go in my pocket.  Key cards are far easier to carry.

The automatic door unlock was convenient, but otherwise they didn't seem very practical on our Regal cruise.  I was constantly asked for a room number, or was asked to tap my medallion on their reader.  As for the ordering/delivery, we frequently saw servers wandering in circles, looking for the same person for 10+ minutes.  The system seemed so inefficient, we refused to use it.  Why order a drink on my phone when I can literally walk <50 ft to go get it myself, or ask the next server who happens by? I refuse to be that lazy.

Assuming you routinely wear pants or shorts w/belt loops, I wonder if you can get one of those medallion holders with a clip and just clip it on to the belt loop.  Thereafter, no worries about having it on your wrist or in your pocket.
