Well...it CAN be warm. Or it can be cold. We last sailed Alaska in June as well...we wore everything from shorts to heavy coats and gloves. Every combo we brought.

Very first cruise, going to Alaska on Princess Sapphire in September 2023.  Any tips?  Going for the wildlife, scenery, etc., not really into casino, nightlife, etc.  Have a balcony room facing the land side.  Thanks!

Welcome to Cruise Critic and the message boards!

Cruise Critic is a great resource for new as well as experienced cruisers and we are so glad you are posting on the boards! Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community Categories list. Read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka Stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in a forum. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following stated in the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread/topic on a forum, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will reply to you.

Also, it is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship, port or sail date in your message as that sort of information may help your fellow Cruise Critic members help you better.

The specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date will be the place for you to get to know the other Cruise Critic members sailing with you before your cruise. Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, there may be excursion or transportation share requests to save money posted in your Roll Call thread.

To explain our Roll Call threads and finding the Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date, please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll CallFor even more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the GuidelinesWe also have the following Cruise Critic article you might enjoy: 8 Reasons to Join a Cruise Critic Roll Call

And don't forget, after your cruise be sure to submit your review for publication by Cruise Critic. Many cruisers will benefit from your experience! See How To: Submit a Member Review.

So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope all this additional information will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. We are glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Happy sails,

Host Kat

HAL does a good job out of Seattle -- it was close to 90 when we sailed - but cold enough when up by the glacier that the hot pea soup they served on deck was welcomed.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

We've taken 3 Alaska cruises on Princess.  They have an excellent enrichment program in Alaska with a full time naturalist on board, plus guest speakers and musicians joining at the various ports.  Consult your Princess Patter (list of the next day's events) that is delivered to your cabin the previous evening and/or your Medallion App that has the same information.  The Alaska cruise board is great for information on excursions (usually cheaper than those offered by any cruise line and almost always not as crowded).

We've also been on the Sapphire Princess twice, including a cruise of the Norwegian Fjords with similar weather to what you might experience on an Alaska cruise - from high 70s in Bergen to low 40s and strong winds (I didn't want to know the windchill temp) at North Cape.  It is a great ship for potentially cold weather cruising since it has a covered pool with a mezzanine level above it that has lounges facing out the floor to ceiling glass windows and doors.  In inclement weather it is easy to go outside, take pictures, and get back in before you start to freeze.  The Sapphire Princess is also smaller (which is relative obviously) than the other Princess ships offering the Alaska itinerary I think.  We like it so much we are booked on a 32 day Hawaii and the South Pacific cruise next year.

We love cruising in Alaska.

Random thoughts:

* Yes, we've been to Alaska when it was snowing...hot...fog and rain. Years ago, we arrived in Seward...the whole place was covered with snow...a winter wonderland...and snowing hard. Most of the crew were playing like kids on the top deck...most have never seen snow.

* Google is your friend. Check the weather the week before you leave. Layering is the key.

* Don't worry about formal nights...casual is fine.

* YouTube is also another good resource. You can watch videos of the Sapphire and all the ports you are visiting.

* Join your "Roll-Call"...to meet fellow cruisers and get ideas for excursions.

* This being your first cruise, you'll have to decide whether to pay for the expensive ship's shore excursions...or DIY. We usually DIY...for example, in Ketchikan, you can easily walk from the cruuse terminal to the charming Creek Street.

* Ask your cabin steward for extra blankets...great to bundle up (stay warm) while watching the scenery from your balcony.

* September...if you are cruising on the the last week for Alaska season, keep an eye out for "clearance sales". We found many of the stores wanting to sell old inventories.

* Happy Sailing!
