Don't forget that the Hampton Inn and Home2Suites are connected if you don't want to splurge for a Suite. We've done both and loved it! 😎

Agreed, we stayed at the Hampton inn in Cocoa Beach and the hotel was great as well as the great beach access.

Do you have water shoes?

On MSC's island, the private beach area for Yacht Club is a bit stony/rocky.

The abundance of chairs and umbrellas is great. The drink service of the the butlers on beach duty is convenient. The food at the Yacht Club beach restaurant is delish. (Eat lunch early to get a good table, though.)

Speaking of butlers, be sure to utilize yours. They find a way to make happen nearly anything you reasonably request.

For example, if the Yacht Club deck area can spare it, your butler can replace one of your balcony chairs with a deck chaise.

Don't let that service go unused. It really adds to the value of a Yacht Club booking.

Saturday is the day before our cruise, this one is a Sunday to Sunday itinerary. No way will I drive in day off, that’s too risky in my opinion.

I’ve never tried that restaurant, I will have to look it up for future reference!!

IMHO, Florida Fresh Grill down the street is way better, if you're staying in Cocoa Beach..

Hi @pirate4me2

Looking forward to your comparisons and your review on the other threads.

The only area of comparison is when you go into the general pop area on MSC.  There is nothing on Carnival that can be compared to the Yacht Club.  If you're apprehensive these days about Carnival, cruise on one of the three Excel Class ships.  Totally different from the rest of the fleet and very comparable to the newer builds of NCL and RCI.

We did bring water shoes after hearing about the YC beach area!
I feel funny about the whole butler thing, but I’m sure we will find some way to utilize the service!

Hi @pirate4me2.

We've been avoiding Carnival for several cruises now. We are Platinum too.

Looking forward to your comparisons and your review on the other threads.

I assume you're doing MSC's Bahamas itnerary.  Have a great cruise and safe travels today.

Thanks for following along!
We are doing the Ocean Cay/Costa Maya/Cozumel run.

Travel day done!

To appease Mom, I crawled out of bed at 3:15, even though my KatieKat tried to tell me not to. She tried all the tricks: lying on my belly purring, refusing to move, giving me the sweetest head butts and meows, then tried rolling around looking cute and meowing when all else failed. When she realized she got an early breakfast thought she abandoned her mission to lure me back to bed.

After tearful goodbyes to the cat and dog, and a lecture to the husband to keep them alive, I hit the road to mom’s at 4, and we were loaded and headed southbound at 4:30. We made good time until about 6:15, when a crash near Pomaria, SC shut down the interstate and we had to do a little detour. It wasn’t bad though, and the detour took us by a Chick fil A. I could totally taste a spicy chicken biscuit with pickles, so we pulled in. That biscuit hit the spot and was fresh and PERFECT!

We trucked on to Jacksonville, FL for our next stop at a tack store I discovered years ago, and reached it at 11:02. Mom and I wasted a good 45 minutes here and left with a back seat full of goodies (not really, just cheap pitchforks) and then grabbed a Blizzard from Dairy Queen for “lunch.” We didn’t want anything heavy, and the FL heat was hitting us good, so ice cream sounded like a great plan.

The rest of the drive was uneventful until about 25 minutes away from the hotel, when we narrowly avoided an incident that could have been bad. We were barreling along at a good clip when a tractor trailer ahead blew a tire, and thank goodness we were in the far left lane. A huge chunk of tire landed in the middle lane, and another car hit it and pieces flew all over, and a bunch of it was stuck under his car. I felt so bad for him, and was so greatful that A) we were not in that lane and that B) none of the debris hit us! I hope that other car was not damaged too badly.

We got the our hotel, Home2Suites, at 2:30. I had done contactless check in on the app so we just went up to our room and chucked our junk in there, then headed down to the lobby. We stopped at reception to pick up our shuttle pass for tomorrow morning (shuttles run at 10:45 and 11:15) and the parking pass for the car. I then called for an Uber to whisk us away to Fishlips for dinner. We walked in at 3:34, and ahhhh…I immediately felt like I was finally on vacation!

We opted to sit upstairs on the deck under an umbrella, and I ordered a drink (Tropical Heat Wave I think the name was?) that had habanero bitters in it…oh my gosh y’all, it was awesome!! Sweet and spicy, and the perfect start to vaca! I sipped it as we watched Ol’ Stumpy (oh sorry, Carnival Freedom) sail out. Mom shook her head at poor Freedom and said WHY has that poor whale tail not been fixed yet…it’s a shame to Carnival, and looks awful up close. To me she looks like the forgotten stepchild of the fleet. But anyway…I know she gets fixed in a few months.

Our food arrived, and dinner was a great success. Mom got the seafood roll with a salad, and the innerds of the roll were DELISH! I got blackened Mahi tacos with fries, and they were as delicious as always. We chowed down and watched the birds and port traffic, and talked to a few locals. It was nice.

We Ubered back to the hotel at 4:45, and wandered the property for a few. We dangled our legs in the pool, and then walked to the “pond” out back. We got excited when we thought we saw an alligator in the water…then realized it was just a turtle. Darn it. Mom so wanted to see a gator in person. Maybe I’ll take her mini golfing where they have them sometime. 😂

We finally decided at 7 that we were done for the day. We are feeling like 2 old ladies with our early morning wake up, so we came back to the room to shower and collapse. We discovered that although the room is clean, they forgot to refill the shower gel and shampoo, but whatevs…I brought my own, I’ll be ok.

Tomorrow…CRUISE DAY!!! I’ll officially jump ship!

Have lots of fun! 😀 We alternate between CCL and NCL, but did sail on Divina in 2017 and had a good cruise. I'm looking forward to your impressions.

Divina is on my list to try if we like MSC. Purely sentimental, but her name reminds me of my dog’s, Divya. 😂 Kinda like I had to sail Carnival Glory because my first horse’s name was Glory lol.

Just a few very quick first impressions…

*This ship is beautiful. Just…wow. That’s all I can really say. MSC really has the wow factor nailed here. However…I think the ceilings are lower, and there are a lot of mirrors, which I foresee being an issue with me after a few drinks. 😂 Not quite sure how I feel about the mirrors yet.

*Cabin storage…I miss Carnival here! Mom and I immediately noticed that there is no shelving next to the mirror in the main cabin area, and normally on Carnival we each take a side for makeup, hairbrushes, etc. So now all my stuff is sprawled on the desk area…not as neat looking. Oh well.

*Love the bathroom in our cabin, with a door instead of a shower curtain; It’s like the Excel class Carnival ships.

*We ventured into a few “gen-pop” areas a few minutes ago. I love the Jungle Pool on here, it’s shady and just really cool looking. The water slides also look like a blast. I’d say MSC seems pretty kid friendly and fun!

More comparisons to come later! There’s a variety show tonight for entertainment, I may check it out, and a glow party at 11, if I can stay up that late. They definitely have a good assortment of activities to partake in I think.

My last comparisons for today:

*I prefer Carnival’s muster drill. MSC has everyone in their cabins to watch a safety video at 4, then you call a number from your stateroom to register that you watched it. Finally, they call half the ship to go to their muster stations to get their cards scanned, then shortly after, the rest of the ship. It leads to some congestion and confusion. I much prefer Carnival’s method!

*There is a lot of fun entertainment onboard! I went to Lip Sync Battle tonight, it was fun, and they had a Glow party at 11 (I was too tired to attend). There are also dance classes, a sailaway party, and I missed the theater show but heard it was decent. There seems to be something for everyone!

Interesting that you suggest cruising one of the Excel Class ships if you're apprehensive about Carnival. It was actually my last Carnival sailing on the Celebration that made me decide that the newest class of Carnival ship has gotten too big for my liking after 20 cruises with the line. Yes, I realize I say this as I just booked the MSC Seaside for an October 2023 sailing.

First, the positives about the Celebration:

  • The ship is brand new, and beautiful! It is definitely a step up in terms of aesthetics from the older ships, although I would say the same about the Horizon (Vista class).
  • Celebration Central offers amazing daytime views of the ocean. We enjoyed looking out in between, or even during, activities in this area.
  • Summer Landing was a fun area for live music at night. We enjoyed the country band that utilizes Guy's Pig and Anchor space in the evenings.
  • The Celestial Strings show in Celebration Central was amazing. We were looking forward to the circus show as well, however the one we were able to get seats for (more than an hour prior to showtime) ended up being canceled at the last minute for unexplained reasons.
  • ChiBang! was a nice alternative to the MDR, and was still included in the base fare (no upcharge) on our sailing. I believe this was originally intended to be an upcharge restaurant along the lines of JiJi Asian Kitchen on the Vista class and Sunshine, but the MDRs on this ship get completely overwhelmed and ChiBang offers a relief valve for those with YTD. We ate here twice for dinner on our January sailing and thought the food was at least as good as the MDR, although not quite on the level of JiJi on either Horizon or Sunshine.
  • Big Chicken and a few of the specialty stations in the Lido Marketplace were welcome additions. Street Eats was a miss for us as it was open limited hours and each stall generally only featured one item per day.

Why we likely won't sail on an Excel Class ship again:

  • The ship was simply too crowded. While embarkation as a Platinum guest wasn't bad, debarkation left us shoulder to shoulder in the stairwells, forward elevator lobby and hallways wrapping past the Punchliner Comedy Club for nearly an hour. There was no organization or queueing, it was shoulders and elbows to inch forward.
  • Overcrowding was also an issue when it came to many activities. The queue for Punchliner was often "at capacity" before the doors even opened 30-minutes prior to showtime. Want to see the evening shows in Celebration Central? You'd better be there at least 60-minutes prior to the first show, or waiting for a "warm seat" when the first show ends to immediately claim it for the second show. It is a beautiful venue, but only seats a few hundred at best, and the floor seats in the back can only see a fraction of the screen or any aerial performances. Even things like trivia required arriving 30+ minutes prior to find a seat.
  • MDR service was not good on this sailing. Not only was it slow, but the service staff in both dining rooms did not live up to other Carnival ships. Yes, I said both dining rooms as we were sent from the YTD dining room (Festivale) over to the scheduled seating dining room (Carnivale) one evening because YTD was over capacity and still had a long wait near the end of dinner service. In Festivale on embarkation night, service was so slow and the crew so poorly trained that the Assistant Waiter served our entree only to have the Staff Waiter immediately come over and take it from us, scolding the Assistant Waiter that he couldn't serve us because the table next to us arrived first and he didn't have their food yet. So our entrees sat on the server station for a few minutes getting cold while we waited for the Staff Waiter to serve the other table first, and then bring us our same plates back. At least he apologized and said they are supposed to serve the other table first, but it makes absolutely no sense as to why you would remove our entrees from right in front of us and make us wait for them while they sit getting cold a few feet away.
  • I didn't personally enjoy the casino layout. It was difficult to maneuver through and I didn't care for the variety of slots onboard. Bar service was also severely lacking in the casino when compared to other Carnival ships.
  • The main theater is a departure from the two level theaters on other ships. Not only did it lose the balcony, but it also lost the bar in the back of the theater and the pre-show bar service. Want a drink? Go to the casino bar. While the sightlines were generally fine from the sloped seating, we missed the balcony stadium seating or long benches offered on the floor in the older Carnival theaters. Color My World, the headline show for the week, was reasonably well done, although we didn't care for it as much as some of the other Playlist shows on offer throughout the fleet.

There were many things to like about the new ship, and we still enjoyed our vacation. We had wonderful meals at Teppanyaki and Emeril's Bistro. Despite the size of the ship, we were able to find loungers in the Serenity area in the late afternoon on a sea day and tables in the Lido Marketplace at the peak of lunch. Our cabin and balcony met our expectations. It was really just the overcrowding of the entertainment venues, the poor MDR experience, and the lack of some of the "fun" of the smaller ships in the fleet that left something to be desired.

If I were to rank all of the Carnival ships, excluding the Australia and Costa by Carnival ships, in order of desirability or likelihood that I would book a sailing on them for a future cruise, without consideration of departure port or itinerary, I'd rank them as follows:

  • Horizon/Vista
  • Panorama (just behind due to the replacement of IMAX with the trampoline park)
  • Dream/Magic/Breeze
  • Sunshine
  • Spirit/Legend/Pride/Miracle
  • Paradise/Elation
  • Sunrise/Radiance (lower due to lack of JiJi and the multi-level Serenity on Sunshine)
  • Celebration/Mardi Gras
  • Conquest/Valor/Glory/Liberty/Freedom

I'll be curious to compare our upcoming MSC Seaside cruise to see where Seaside falls on that list. I'll look forward to OP's thoughts on the subject as well.

I'll be curious to compare our upcoming MSC Seaside cruise to see where Seaside falls on that list. I'll look forward to OP's thoughts on the subject as well.

I made my statement regarding the Excel Class because the Excel Class are the first ships that compare to the newer builds on NCL or RCI, Carnival' s main competitors.  I've sailed on NCL 8 times and RCI 7 times so I have first hand experience comparing the various lines and what they offer.  Have also sailed on every class of ship Carnival has.  We have 4 future cruises on the Celebration as well as a 10 day on the Venezia over the next 10 months.

Many cruisers that have only sailed on Carnival don't like the Excel Class because they get overwhelmed by the size of the ship or the 6000 on board.  This is great because that will keep the older ships in the fleet full which is a good thing for the Corporation.  Some people like vanilla and others like chocolate.

As to the MSC Seaside, be prepared for a European skewed affair.  The ship is nice and glitzy and has the wow factor with the crystals in their staircases.

We tried the Seaside a few months ago (YC also). We liked the YC experience (oh, if your butler LOCKS YOU OUT on your balcony - that's good for some champagne and chocolate covered strawberries, LOL).

As for the rest of the ship...so-so. I prefer Excel ships in general. Though, it was only a 3-nt cruise and there were some extenuating circumstances which impacted our experience.

Trying the Seashore out next year.

OH... be on the lookout for the escargot in the YC restaurant at dinner - it brought back old school Carnival MDR memories, I enjoyed THREE ! 🙂

With your being in the Yacht Club, I think MSC should easily win this challenge.  Hope you and your mom have a great cruise.

I was going to say the same thing. We cruise Carnival and MSC but Yacht Club only. There will be a world of difference between standard Carnival experience and YC on MSC. Not going to be a fair comparison. I know you will enjoy MSC, have fun!

I’m not comparing the overall cruise experience, but the common areas/private island/onboard entertainment, which so far I’m enjoying. I realize on Carnival I don’t get the butler service, private restaurant, etc so I’m trying to not let that weigh in on this comparison.

Time for today’s thoughts/comparisons. We are docked at Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island. So I’m going to compare it to Carnival’s HMC.

*First off, I love that we are docked, not having to tender in. I hate tender rides.
*I love that my drink package works on the island! I still don’t get why Carnival cannot do that.
*Both islands serve guests lunch onshore, a buffet style. Typical cookout stuff.
*Overall, the island is gorgeous, with so many beach choices. I do think HMC has nicer sand…the 2 beaches I visited today had shell pieces in them, so you did need to be careful.
*I know not every MSC itinerary does this, but I’m thrilled to be overnighting here! It’s cool to have evening activities to look foward to and not feel rushed to get back

onboard.

Both islands are just perfect beach days…so much nicer than the beaches back home! I kinda think Ocean Cay has an edge over HMC though, simply for the ease of getting onto the island.

Here’s a rare photo of me, I’m posting it simply because I think it’s my best selfie ever, and truly embodies “beach hair, don’t care.”

Yes, MSC has a buffet (and food trucks) for Bella through Aurea cruisers. You ate lunch in the Yacht Club restaurant, though, yes?

Was it to your liking?
