skylark Posted June 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2004 I Leave in four days on the Glory. I decided to pack a few things and decided to look over our formal wear before I pack it on friday. Apparently my sons cat of five months got into our closet and assumed my formal gown was its personal scratching post. OH MY GOSH its totally ruined. Snags and pulled threads everywhere. Unfortunately I did not have it in a plastic bag. I don't want to go buy or go thru the hassle of trying to find another one, in such a short time,or the expense. I do however have a pair of cream color dress pants with a shimmery gold dress top would this pass for formal night or do I need to go shopping??? Oh and the cat is in BIG trouble!!!! hdawson Posted June 15, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 15, 2004 That sounds plenty good for one formal night. Dept stores are currently selling greatly marked down formal wear from Prom and Wedding season.
cruise junky joan Posted June 15, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 15, 2004 You can always add some big bling bling earrings to this top and it will immediately become very dressy. Joan
garycarla Posted June 15, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 15, 2004 formal night is more of a dress up than a PROM or wedding type event. And nice dress will be fine. Really. Alaska via Spirit 6/2/
ljrfrm Posted June 15, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 15, 2004 Sounds good to me...and like someone said, you can dress it up with your accessories and you'll be good to go! Travelitis Posted June 15, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 15, 2004 Carnival's definition of formal is very loose running the gamut from formal to informal daytime attire. You are going to be well within their definition. Travelgrrl Posted June 15, 2004 #12 Share Posted June 15, 2004 I mildly disagree about prom dresses and formal nights - we have gotten many prom type dresses on clearance and worn them on formal night. Fun for all.
Ronn452 Posted June 15, 2004 #13 Share Posted June 15, 2004 I understand that several Chinese restaurants will offer a free dinner in exchange for a cat; or perhaps a nice fur hand bag could be fashioned from it to accent the new outfit. cruzzza Posted June 16, 2004 #15 Share Posted June 16, 2004 I would personally feel a bit underdressed, but this comes from someone who dresses up big time on formal night - I might even shop the clearanced prom dresses, too!! If you get a whim, why not browse through the clearance of your local department store. I got my last dress for only $15, and it looked good. Is your top "shiny" gold? Regardless, go get those bling bling earrings and you'll be fine. Carnival Destiny 2/22/98 (Honeymoon) Carnival Conquest 11/15/02 "Maiden Voyage" Jubilee 9/15/03 last Texas cruise! Kittymama Posted June 17, 2004 #17 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Our cats must be SIBLINGS! I had a beautiful formal dress, then one day pulled it out & discovered that one of my snots (I have 6) had decided to use it as a swingset--that's all I can think. (I still have it, as it's pretty hilarious to look at--now.) Anyway, yes I've had to make do, & I've had no problem with shimmery top & pants. I've even used a fancy t-shirt & pants. Really, the crew doesn't care what you wear in the dining room on formal night, as long as it's not shorts--it mostly depends on you. One of the many nice things about Carnival is that passengers don't get snooty about what others are wearing. Heck, I've even seen people in loud Hawaiian shirts on formal night--& they were probably having the best time of all! Formal night, like every other night on Carnival, is for your own fun--get as fancy (or not) as you want. You can even wear shorts & go to the informal dining room (we did last cruise). Kittymama Posted June 17, 2004 #18 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Ronn--Don't think I haven't thought of that option for some of mine! I have one HUGE 30-pounder, & every time my brother visits, he'll croon to the kitty--"Ah sooo, dim sum pussy cat." (The cat is dumb as a post, but totally sweet, so he just lies there & blinks.) tjohn159d Posted June 17, 2004 #19 Share Posted June 17, 2004 DW buys all of her formal wear at the thrift store and hardly ever pays over $10 for them. GAndie Posted June 17, 2004 #20 Share Posted June 17, 2004 You'll look fine dressed in nice cream slacks and a glittery top with your formal accessories. I think it's the jeans, tee's and casual sundresses that raise the hackles on some peoples' necks. I think guys do well with dark suit and tie if they don't want to wear or don't have a tux...sans sneakers!
Rare Terre Posted June 17, 2004 #21 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I think the pants will be fine. If you really want a dress, I think you can rent them on board, just like the men can rent tuxes. Check Carnival's site about this or the brochure that came with your docs. You still have time to check a consignment store, too.
