Decorations and cakes- Are they worth it? Please help I'm leaving soon!

Recommended Posts

My husband and I are leaving Monday out of Galveston on splendour of the seas. His birthday is the same day. I've thought about getting the room decorations for 30.00 and maybe the small birthday cake for 8.00. Can anyone tell me if they are nice or not?? We are on a budget and I don't want to throw the money away, but I'd like to make him feel special too. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!

We ordered a cake for the 16th birthday of my DS. It is a very small cake.

If you ask you waiter they will bring out a scheduled desert with a candle and still sing Happy Birthday without the additional charge.

It is really dependent on his personality. I have had the cake delivered at dinner and it is fun, the waiters sing happy birthday even.

Does he like a fuss made?

Maybe use the money for something you know for sure he will enjoy.

Is it worth the money? Sure, if you think it is something he will really like. I have never had the decorations done but have seen them and they are ok. Kinda fun to come into the cabin and have it decorated.

IMO, the decorations are nice but not worth the $30. See if you can distract him for a bit and try doing it yourself.

If you leave Monday, I'm not sure you can even still order them from RCI, but I could be wrong...

Personally I would never waste the money on the decorations. My TA got them for us for an anniversary cruise once. I thought they were cheesy and would have rather had the money she spent on them in onboard credit or casino chips. Everyone is different though...

I've gotten the decorations 3 times and I would say yes, it is worth it! There will be a sign on the door and streamers hanging from the ceiling of your cabin and balloons. It makes the cabin very festive!

I had the cake that is delivered to your cabin once and it was small and not very good. I vote no on that.

Good luck and have a wonderful cruise!!!

At this point you will be charged an extra fee for the late order...so I think you may want to just take a BIG RED BOW and tie in on a strategic place on your own body.

I ordered DH birthday decor (late and got charged the extra fee) and the cake was in the room when we got on board, but the decorations were not. I had to go down to the pursers desk, with a copy of the order and ask them to put them up. They were nice, and festive but for the cost, I would pass next time. Can you print your own sign on your computer and get him a massage instead?

I made arrangements to have the decorations in our cabin as well as the chocolate covered strawberries for my 3rd wedding anniversary, then we decided to change from the NOS to EOS about 2 months ago, and somehow along the way my order got cancelled. The only way I knew was by receiving my credit card statement & seeing that there was a refund. I was never notified. When I contacted Gifts & Gear, they said I had called & asked for it to be cancelled. Which is completely untrue. I called to make sure they had the updated cruise info, and was assured everything would be switched. I let them know I was not happy about the situation, and told them I felt they should re-order everything & I should either receive a discount or shouldn't be charged for my inconvenience. I told them I was pretty upset now, but would have been even more so if I'd gotten to the ship & never saw any decorations or strawberries & never knowing they had been cancelled. They said I would have to provide a credit card number to have everything reinstated, and there would be no discount. When I complained again about the lack of customer service, they just said "Sorry you feel that way. Have a nice cruise". Those were their exact words. I never got an apology or anything.

I have had more problems with RC customer service on this cruise than I ever have. On my prior cruises, everyone I ever dealt with was as nice as pie. This one has been a different story. I even had one cruise agent start off our conversation on the phone by saying "Why do you have such a large credit to your credit card?" This was after we'd changed cruises, and got a refund for the difference. I felt like I was being interrogated.

The final straw was when they sent our travel documents with the wrong cabin number on them. When I called to make sure the correct cabin number was in their system & to have the documents reissued, I was told it would cost me $35, when it was not my fault. How's all that for customer service? I hope this isn't setting the tone for our upcoming cruise!

I would save your money.

If he's the type to enjoy the fuss, tell your waiter and he'll bring a small cake. Several waiters will sing to him. My husband wouldn't enjoy this but maybe yours would.

As for decorations, pack some balloons and ribbons and put them in the room when he's not looking. Maybe pack some silly or not so silly gifts. It will mean the same thing to him.

In my opinion, they're worth it, so I say go for it! I had our room decorated for my husband's birthday on the Voyager in December. The room was decorated upon our arrival, and my husband was very surprised. The kids loved them too. The decorations stayed up all week, and it gave a nice festive feel to the room. Also, a cake is included in the price for the decorations. They include a small personalized card as well.

I personally think it's best to have the cake in the stateroom because there are so many desserts to choose from in the dining room. We kept the cake in the fridge and DH and kids munched on it now and then.

I think the decorations are fun. A few balloons, a lot of streamers and one of "lollipop" paper decorations with an RCI ship in the middle.

The cake was delicious - I think there's a choice of chocolate or white. We got the chocolate in the dining room and loved it. We were alone at a table for 2, so we shared it with the table next to us.

Personally speaking, I would go for the cake at dinner. I'm a freak who can't stand clutter, I wouldn't feel comfortable in a room with a bunch of decorations. They would come down once "my day" was over. Hence, it wouldn't be worth it to me to have a room decorated.

Cake in the dining room is fun, though. On my last cruise, it was "sports deck guy's" birthday. He was one of our tablemates, anyone who was on that cruise could tell you who "sports deck guy" was. Anyway, all the women at the table made sure that a cake was ordered and when the tables nearby found out that "sports deck guy" was at our table and that it was his birthday, half the dining room broke out in song.

Good times. Have I mentioned that I love traveling with Texans? :)

Just a follow up to my previous post. I got an unexpected email from Gifts & Gear this morning. They reinstated my order & paid for it, with the following message:

"Your Order Has Been Received & Confirmed & Paid with our sincere apologies for the inconvenience, Have a Wonderful Cruise and a Happy very Anniversary!!"

My husband seems to think the last email we got from Gifts & Gear saying "Sorry you feel that way. Have a nice cruise" must have been intercepted by a supervisor!

It's the small things that make us happy. A mear $44 made me feel a whole lot better about the customer service I've received.

You could both get all dressed up in your birthday suits! (I'm only suggesting this as jeans are not allowed in the dinning room - from what I've been told):)

Are you sure?! I thought I saw a thread or two saying you could wear jeans in the dining room ;) Hey - I have an idea! You can bring "happy birthday" patches along and iron them onto your jeans using the travel iron that you are bringing on board, and then wear the happy birthday jeans to formal night!! :D

I hear people say "save your money", but how can you put a price on seeing your loved one's ( who ever you get the decorations for ) face and huge smile when they go into the cabin and see those decorations. Sure its not a huge cake and the decorations are not New Years Eve style, but its the thought that counts...Dont forget that. Think of it like this....

-Price of the Cruise.....1000

-Price of the airline tix.....250

-Seeing your loved one smile and be happy over a mear 30 dollar decorations.....priceless !!!

Its all about the thought....dont be so cheap. Especially after you just blew 300 in the casino.....lol Your family is worth much more than that.!!

I did it several times and will do it again. Its just heart warming to see my wife smile when she opens that door. Sure I could do it myself and lug all that crap down to the boat, but the 30 bux is nothing compared to the fact that they do it for me and I dont have to worry about it.

No question....Its worth it
