a daily newspaper distributed free at the fancy coffee bar on the promenade. It's off a satellite feed, about 8 pages with no pictures with an assortment of fairly up to date date news stories. noticed this on the dream Jan 2-9, 2010.

 

 

I noticed it also at the coffee bar on our cruise on the Triumph Jan 4-9th. Another tip for those of you who love the chocolate covered strawberries, it costs more to purchase the strawberries at formalities and have them sent to your room at a specific time than it does if you just go to the coffee/cake bar and purchase them yourself. Your receive them right then on covered plate so that you can take them back to your room. They are delicious:D

You can get free sea-motion medication at the information desk. If you as at the beginning of the cruise, they will give you enough for the week. Apparently, it is a bi stronger than the OTC meds.

 

I read that someone mentioned the fridge in the cabin. it's not a fridge, but an ice box type of thing. If you want to keep things cool, get a bucket of ice from down the hallway or the steward will get it for you.

 

The rolls of 'Inch of gold...and silver' will tarnish on you. It is good for costume jewelery, but mine tarnished about 1 1/2 months of continuous wearing. It is warranteed...you can exchange it on your next cruise. Ha! They gotcha!

 

The Soda card isn't worth it in my opinion. It was a lot of money and we never drank near enough pop to cover the charge of it. We drank free ice tea, orange jiuce(in the morning only), tea, coffee, ice water, fruit juice through out the day from the buffet lines. The ice tea, fruit juices are just that. You might want to add a little splenda in it, which is beside the dispensers.

 

The beer is cheaper to buy by the ice buckets. Also, the aluminum cans of bottled beer is about 1 1/2 size larger than the average bottle of beer. So, the deal is even better. lol

 

The library is only open about 1 hour each day, so get a book early to have a good read. Although I'm not sure of how many books are actually in the libary, as it is a very small room.

# 1 THE AC CONTROL!!! I had a tip from a friend before the first of my 3 cruises.....On the Fascinaiton and the Sensation....the dial control is ON THE CEILING. We had to stand on a bed to reach and adjust it. LOOK UP...or you may freeze.

 

# 2 Bring a light sweater..being a Floridian, I've learned to ALWAYS expect cold ac in dining rooms and theaters.

I have wondered about the "Library" on the Ecstasy. The Book is locked behind glass doors.

On the Conquest there is Sur Mer a seafood place upstairs in the buffet area. They cook the food fresh to order. The hours are limited. If you go the first day it will not be crowded. People do not realize it is there but later in the cruise they will discover it.

 

There's one on Glory also but I never did find it. Even crew didn't know where it was.

The bug got me....I had read earlier today about a bug on the screen and didn't think much of it. After a while and several more posts, the bug got me...LOL I had to share it with my daughter. Now, I have to clean my screen. There are so many finger prints all over it.

I can think of a thousand other things that would be more useful on a cruise than a flashlight. If I were going to take a flashlight, I'd need 4 suitcases for everything else.

 

I'm more of a light packer.

Not trying to be a stick in the mud on the FRS-GMRS radios, but the higher power ones (any GMRS capable ones)do actually require a license ($75-85 for 5 years) and are good for use in the United States and its Territories (aka Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, etc) but not other countries where the FCC has no jurisdiction. IOW depending on the country, you may be operating an illegal radio. I am sure it gets overlooked, but the possibility of getting into trouble remains. So use on shore excursions or in port at your own risk...

 

Also technically since the ships are not US flagged they could be considered illegal... however I have yet to hear anyone get in trouble for this...

 

Like I said I personally don't care if anyone uses 2 way radios or not on a cruise, I just want folks to be aware that there is a gray and a black and white area in using these do so at your own risk.

 

I usually carry my ham radio with me (walkie talkie sized) and I have to be licensed in each country that we visit (as well as the country the ship is flagged in) as well as receive permission from the captain. I am also subject to the rules of those countries if I operate my radio in a way that violates their laws, but it is pretty cool to talk to the locals while in port :)

I just showed this to my husband who is a ham radio operator and has always wanted to bring his onboard to 'play' with! He was very interested in finding out how you were able to use yours! Is there any way he can contact you (email?) or if you prefer you can post here on how you got the required permissions etc?

 

Any info greatly appreciated!

That's what we understood but the poster I was responding to seems to somehow have gotten permission to bring one onboard? Really wondering how and if that is possible? (my dh would love to know!)

I finally made it through this whole thread. I think I have been trying since 2005 and never have gotten through it all! Thanks for all the tips. My only tip is you really don't need to pack all the outfits you think...I never wore half of what I took the first cruise and cut way back for the second and still had unworn clothes at the end. Have a great cruise!!! :D

At the Captains cocktail party (and after your second cruise, at the past guest party), avoid what the waitresses are carting around drink wise, and order directly from the bar.

 

All drinks are free.

 

 

Can you go to the past guest party even if you are a first timer? Do they check it somehow if u have been there before?

Marks tips:

  • Bring Coozies for drinks
  • Stash booze in luggage BEFORE the trip (in liter soda bottles so they won’t break)
  • Smuggled booze in wheelchair in soda jugs at a port once
  • Bring alcohols that mix well with fruit juice (available all day)
  • Bring water gun squirt tubes (2+) for kiddies (instant life of the party)
  • We always bring our own snorkel gear, no renting and fits perfect (find cash in swimming pools too!)
  • Small carry bag on board if you want to jump in the pool immediately (not always full of water but spas usually are)
  • Extra camera memory
  • No more ship bought excursions (cattle calls)
  • Bring my own tux
  • Tip a little more than the “mandatory" amount (they work hard)
  • Tip for room service
  • Cash out ALL your casino chips before the last night
  • Buckets of beer (cheapest route for that)
  • Bring walkie-talkies (me=casino, her=lounge chair, kids = everywhere)
  • Casino users - register your account in the casino for freebies
  • I stick the lifejacket whistle up my butt, go ahead and blow it (lol)
  • If adjoining balcony cabin has friends or family they can usually open the divider door on the balcony
  • There are coin washer and dryers available

The minute you start your vacation, before you even get to the cruise port, slow down and relax, everything will be great. The sooner you de-stress the better. Everyone is important. Noone is getting more than you. Make as many friends as you can, it will make all the difference.
