Houston building a "state of the art" cruise terminal?? (Merged threads)

Ok, just a little bit of hopefulness to add. I was over on Hwy 146 near Port Road today and saw a brand new Comfort Suites under construction. This is the first sign of new development in the area of the new cruise terminal which is in a predominately industrial area. Just seeing something new happening is a good sign, right?:)

"RIGHT";) I dont think their building the Hotel for the container companies!!:p  :D .

I drove down Fairmont Pkwy which is near by and also noticed what looked like a new hotel being built.

All I know is this pale white chick habla espanol....And after my last trip to Cozumel, and knowing what the shop keepers are saying, well..I'd rather stay on board ship. It is a wasted port to me! Sooo...cruising from the Houston area? Why are all of our ships "branded" the same? Same ole ports? Party ships? What is left for us folks that just want to read and relax, and maybe, possibly visit places that the other ships don't offer-NADA. Guess I'll be traveling by air until the cruiselines figure this riddle out.

I agree completely. We are going to see some of America (going to the Grand Canyon, etc) for the rest of this summer and for the first time in (boo hoo) 7 years, we are not taking a cruise this year. Been there, done that, give me something new. And PLEASE don't take me back to Cozumel. I don't speak Spanish, but I don't like feeling like I am being taken advantage of, and that is the way I feel in Cozumel. I went there back in the 80's, before the cruises started coming, and everyone was very nice, things were inexpensive, and it was pretty undeveloped. I would MUCH rather go to Honduras or someplace like that. Did you know Carnival is building a dock in Honduras? Perhaps we can get there going out of Galveston sometime in the future. THAT would make sense....of course, saying that, it almost assures it won't happen. Because WHAT in the cruise line industry makes sense???

I too fell in love with Honduras.. I am hoping who ever comes to the new port goes to Honduras..

I wouldn't read to much innto the new hotel construction in the area. With so many industrial plants in the area, these places stay full of out of town techs, engineers etc. No one would build a hotel in anticpation of a cruise happening some time. Think about it, probably at the best someone cruising may stay there one or maybe two nights. That leaves the place vacant for 5 nights a week. Not a good business plan.

I guess it's a waiting game now!;) , We shall see what occurs, maybe they thought the same thing when they built the Hotels on Seawall Blvd. In Galveston, when the Cruiselines came there!!;)

I agree the hotel not being built in anticipation of a cruiseline. Here in Deer Park a 4th hotel just opened and a LaQuinta is soon to open making it 5 motels in a town of about 50,000. It has to be the industrial/chemical business around here as they all seem to be busy. It was a nice a thought and hopefully cruise pax will someday have plenty of lodging to choose from.:)

Every time I turn around in Clear Lake/Webster another hotel is going up. Now they are building a Marriott Courtyard on NASA Rd. 1 across from JSC. I never see the parking lots full with the exception of the Hilton but I guess someone has done some marketing research.

I remember back about 15 years ago, we had an area Beta Sigma Phi convention and I think it was in Deer Park. Instead of a "host" hotel they held it at a high school. Since our chapter used the day convention as a "girls night out" we stayed at a La Quinta which was across the street the night before after spending Friday shopping at the Galleria. The rate was something like $80 for the night which we thought was outrageous considering where it was and the condition the hotel was in--poor. We remarked to the check in clerk he "sure was proud of his establishment" to be charging that much. He just smiled and said "see any other motels around here you would stay at?" Times are a changing down here in refinery country (lol).

Snooze! We need to talk about the Conquest in July, the eastern run.

We toured and had dinner aboard the MSC Opera when she was brand new. What a wierd ship. Cramped dining rooms, strange deck layouts and a few more things. With the abundance of smoking in Europe I'll bet she smells like the Marlborough man on a hot day by now :)

Bayport as a cruise terminal is not in the near future. Who knows what the end result is. Watch the Bay Area Chamber Business News website for developments about Bayport as well as new retail and hotel development in the area. Sylvan Beach in La Porte has a several million dollar waterfront planned with funding.

Headed to Benno's for lunch, cruisers from Clear Lake to Galveston see you outside. The red snapper are really good right now!

.

Sorry, somehow my subsctption to thread went kaput.

Looks like people on the Conquest and the folks who left yesterday on the Ecstasy will have wet cars when they get back.

We were on the Ecstasy this week getting off yesterday.

It was a rough, but tolerable ride staying ahead of Ike.

We live in League City and are staying put:eek:

Oh my gosh -- cruise ships left yesterday?? -- where can they sail in Gulf without feeling the rough seas, winds since that storm is sooooooo huge?? Look at the map on http://www.stormcarib.com!! Maybe they sailed south along coast of Texas, then Mexico into the area west of Yucatan Peninsula. Frankly they may not have cars to come back to.....

People in Galveston/Houston areas: DO NOT STAY to ride this one out -- take your precious possessions & head north -- think about the devastation left from Katrina storm surge in Mississippi!!! Nothing was left -- that storm moved the casinos off their foundations & pushed them inland!!

With flooding currently taking place in Galveston, maybe this is a time that the new cruise terminal gets a second look if Galveston is not usable after the hurricane

I beleive Houstons port and downtown areas are getting hit hard and high water too, but maybe not as bad as galveston, can you beleive Carnivals conquest is still trying to leave out Monday on a 6 day Cruise instead of the 7 Day one!!

pages_maintop.jpgTROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE

SEPTEMBER 12, 2008 – 1:30 PM

We are closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Ike. All of Carnival’s ships continue to operate at a safe distance from this storm. Our number one priority is the safety of our guests and crew.

For our cruises scheduled to depart from Galveston on Sunday or Monday, here are the current plans:

Carnival Conquest September 14, 2008 Departure

Based on all the information available to us now, we do not expect the Port of Galveston to be open on Sunday. We have now decided to operate a 6 day cruise departing on Monday, September 15. This cruise will visit Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Guests that elect to sail on this cruise will receive a 15% refund of cruise fare. In addition, we will provide a 25% discount on a future 3 to 7 day cruise departing prior to December 15, 2009.

There is some chance that the Port of Galveston will remain closed on Monday. If that occurs, we will operate a 5 day cruise departing on Tuesday, September 16.

We will send a communication to all guests on this cruise no later than 7:00 PM (CDT) on Sunday to advise any changes to our plans to operate the 6 day cruise on Monday, September 15.

The latest information from the Port of Houston Authority is that the cargo terminal and the cruise terminal, Bayport, faired very well.

I asked the folks at Carnival about this yesterday evening and they are still committed to making port in Galveston on Monday but if I were a betting man I'd bet on seeing both the Conquest and the Ecstasy at Bayport...

Part of I-10 is shut down because it's flooded by the Heights, how do you get to the Terminal from Fort Worth,Texas?? Also the Port authority is trying to get their people back because he said they needed to get the freighters out?? So Mach I beleive your right,Carnival doesnt want 3,000 of us waiting there when they get there either thats why they wont commit till 7 PM on the Destination of Conquest and Ectasy!!Also carnivals still letting anyone cancel without penalties right now, they told me saturday was the cutoff!! Also theres a curfew in Houston as well from 9PM to 6AM till next saturday and also theres still no power!! So im going to wait till 7PM and then go from there on my decision!! Thanks for the update!!;)
