Female Crewmembers?

Recommended Posts

I've never been on a cruise, but in reading the tons of reviews and threads, I've never heard anyone mention that they've had a stewardess or a waitress, only males. I know there must be women on the ship...what do they do? Everyone I ask says that all of their service team primarily have been men...I wonder why???

Just something I was thinking about, lol.

There are female stewards, waiters, casino workers..etc.. I think working on a ship is more appealing to men than women.

Absolutely - there are women crewmembers on board!!

We have had both...female cabin stewards and female assistant waiters but no females as "head waiter". I guess I have just always used the term "steward" and "waiter" generically - not gender specific. Never really thought about using "waitress" or "stewardess" - maybe other posters haven't either  .

I have yet to see a guy working a Purser's Desk. ;) Not to mention Camp Carnival, Spa and on-board shop staff.

There are male dancers however.

That's funny - because I said the same thing to DH a couple of cruises ago when there was a guy at the Purser's desk. It seemed odd to me at the time - because I had never seen a guy at the desk either...until then ;) .

We had a Head Waitress, Avah ... on the Fantasy when it was out of Canaveral ... she was wonderful! We were telling the matre 'd how much we liked her and he said she was going to be the "Employee of the Month" the next month, and apparently that has some perks to it.

We've noticed what a physically taxing job it is to work on a ship -- and for extended periods of time!! I would think women would be less inclined unless in the capacity of officer . . .

We figured out the guy in the khaki jump suit tells the guy in the blue jump suit what to do ... and the guy in white tells the guy in khaki ... and the guy in white with lots of braid tells everbody .... just an observation.

On the two cruises we've been on, it's been about 65% men and 35% women.

Had an awesome head bartender on Valor, Angela, from Romania.

Had an EXCELLENT head waitress from Ukraine, Oleysa, on Triumph.

A lot of crew at the Purser's Desk on Triumph were also women, but some men as well (on Valor also, now that I think of it)...I think the head Purser (is that even a term? The head honcho in that department) was a woman as well. Lots of female crew in the shops and in the casino as well. Both hosts/esses in our dining room were female as well.

I'd agree that most female crewmembers that I've met/noticed are either from the Phillipines or eastern Europe.

Our Head Waiter was female on three of our cruises! Here was our Wait Team from the Legend:

We have had female Stewerds also. We have seen female officers, casino workers, bar staff and ofcourse dancers. My guess would be atleast 1/3 of the staff is usually female. That would be several hundred women staff on any given ship.

I usuallly cruise on Celebrity and a few years back had a female Somelier from Croatia on Mercury who was great, a female cabin steward on Galaxy who was not, an assistant waitress on Galaxy who was from Sweeden, Ingrid, who was the pleasantness person ever; and last March on the Summit, meet an africian-american woman officer from the State of Georgia. She was the ship's personnel officer, and a grandmother, a very interesting woman.

We'd have female head waiters - that's what their tag says, not "waitress". Also female stewards, bartenders, Cruise Directors, social hosts and Lots of casino staff.

We've seen plenty of men behind the Purser's desk too.

Come to think of it though, never seen a female omelet chef!

We've seen quite a mix, but I agree that it is probably about 65/35 male.

Our our recent Destiny cruise, we saw the following amongst the many female crew: asst CD, asst maitre'd in our dining room, Karaoke Lounge host, many waiters both head and asst, only a couple of room stewards, many buffet staff, several bartenders, about 1/4 of the casino BJ dealers.

There were two men who were working the on-board shops including the obnoxious sales guy that ended up chasing DW out of the shops for good on our ship (see my review of the Destiny for details). I noticed about 1/4 of the purser's desk were men including the supervisor on sail-off day when we had major problems.

At sea, they have always used the traditional male terms for all positions. Women may serve in all of them, but they use the same terms as gender neutral designations.

Please DO NOT post Real names of employee's it is an invasion of privacy and could put them in danger!

I don't care HOW good of a hacker you are, with whatever intentions, if someone says, "Mike from England", it doesn't give a last name, map coordinates to family addresses, bank account numbers, social security numbers or anything else. "Mike from England" could probably be a few MILLION people.
