brn2crz Posted July 2, 2007 #26 Share Posted July 2, 2007 Just confirming what others have said. It is the same young man.. It just really breaks my heart. This young man went through some unthinkable things...It was almost a miracle he had made it at all.Like I said earlier..I had just seen a blub a week or so ago about how he was speaking out for the first time since it had happened. I know that they had long since moved from the home they lived in. The two thugs were convicted and one was given life, and one 90 years. I am a little surpised to learn that his parents were not on the ship with him,but will not pass judgement,as I could never imagine the walk in their shoes.Prayers for all. MoeGirl Posted July 2, 2007 #27 Share Posted July 2, 2007 I just saw this on the 10:00 P.M. News on KPRC in Houston. I feel so sorry for the family, my prayers go out to them. :(
trixidixie Posted July 2, 2007 #28 Share Posted July 2, 2007 If folks want to jump from a ship they do not need a balcony to do so. There are enough upper decks for that. I don't see the cruise lines cutting back on balcony cabins. Unfortunately if those that want to kill themselves or someone wants to kill someone else, this is a sure fire way to do it. Less mess, and you can always claim the person was too drunk to know what they were doing. That excuse is good for both suicide and murder. There is no way to check if someone is suicidal or not and no way to check if someone wants to murder someone. We all have to take our chances these days. He was supposed to be really drunk, hopped into the lifeboat and started cutting the ropes with an ax. Then when confronted by asst. chief of security, he jumped. Life preservers etc were thrown at him and he was rescued by the coast guard.
Aquahound Posted July 2, 2007 #35 Share Posted July 2, 2007 30 minutes is a long time to tread water for most people. It would even be more difficult for a non swimmer, or someone hurt in the fall. I agree. It is. But what I meant was.....30 minutes is an excellent recovery time for the ship.
Karlee106 Posted July 3, 2007 #36 Share Posted July 3, 2007 The news station did not report if this man was arrested after being released from the hospital. You would think trying to cut a lifeboat free with an axe would be some kind of crime  http://www.wptv.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=d9afcb69-701b-4990-a7c0-268df78f27b3
billylen Posted July 3, 2007 #37 Share Posted July 3, 2007 How tragic on so many levels. 1. The things people sometimes do to one another, and 2. How help, when really needed is either not sought or available. God Bless his soul

Havana Daydreamin Posted July 3, 2007 #39 Share Posted July 3, 2007 (It's a copyright violation to print an entire story here) BINGO...especially adding further tragedy to the family as one who was either unaware of this boy's suffering or had forgotten. I am saddened in reading of this.

RuthlessBoss Posted July 3, 2007 #41 Share Posted July 3, 2007 Although "recovery" is a nice word, NO ONE ever recovers mentally. That memory comes up at the least expected times. We are taught to accept it, it wasn't our fault, but that still does not delete the event. The boy was saying and doing what he thought family and friends expected him to do. That crime was horrible. I have my own bad memories as does many other people, you don't erase them but would if we could. His thought processes of ridding of this memory involved taking his own life. He's in a better place now, and free.
Silvery Seas Cruiser Posted July 3, 2007 #42 Share Posted July 3, 2007 This story is so sad. Just think how he suffered emotionally all this time and I guess he just couldn't take any more. Probably he couldn't make himself believe things would ever get any better.

(no offense Carol) Life in prison is not good enough! Do the same to those pieces of #@&* that they did to that kid. I can't even comment anymore........horrible......absolutely horrible! I hope they get their due in prison......they can be the girlfriend of every inmate in there and it still wouldn't even begin to compare to what they did. I hope they rot in ....... However, it is something I hope that I NEVER experience....that being said....I hope that I can be faithful to love as I have been loved. It is a HEAVY burden, and I don't know IF I would be up to it with the experience that is described. I am weak....God have mercy on me!
mcca2 Posted July 3, 2007 #49 Share Posted July 3, 2007 Oh,very sad.Just left Galveston and saw Rhapsody and Conquest pass right in front of us and off into the sunset. The ocean brings me so much comfort,I guess to others, its a different feeling... What they are eluding to in the blog, although I don't know where this person got their info is that this is the same teen that endured a horrific attack that I wont even begin to try to discuss here, but he was in a coma for quite a while, and very nearly died numerous times. This happened I guess over a year ago, at a party in his own home and he and his family have just begun to talk openly some about it.To say it was a hate crime, does not do it justice. So if this is the same person, my heart really really goes out to his family and to him. What this child faced was way more than the avg child could take. This really should have been reconsidered before they took him on a cruise...All specualtion of course...No idea if this is the young man. I was just thinking the same thing. We were watching thme leave today from Sea Wolfe Park today. My heart just breaks for this family, after what they have gone through. This is really sad. According to the news article link that Gordon posted in post #1 the teen was named and he had endured 30 surgeries plus needed more. He had been upset that everyone knew that he was the victim of such an attack. How very sad for him and his family, and for his friends who he was cruising with as well. :( This is more than sad it's heartbreaking. After all this young man enjured his state of mind must have still been tenious to say the least. He enjured a trial against the perps (now in jail fo life)but he had horrific injuries.. Doesn't mean he should jump ship, but at least we can understand HIS poor mind. unlike some others. God Bless him and his poor family, for what they have to enjoy. God Bless America. :)
Cruise Gypsy Posted July 3, 2007 #50 Share Posted July 3, 2007 I think this one is a little different, (although I am sure every jumper who isn't drunk would have a distressing story.) This young lad had been through a rape, had 30 surgeries, was facing more - and was tired of being identified as "that kid". In this case putting his physical body back together, and one would assume some counselling for his psychological trauma, was not enough. My prayers go out to his family as they cope with a continuing tragedy. I would not put him in the same group as the stupid people who get drunk and fall off, however tragic that also is. Fran in Toronto Very well said Fran. This is a sad end to a very sad story.
