Mariner of the Seas Around the Horn of South America

Was he on the ship? Was he ill? Was it expected?

Yes, he was on the ship. From an email I had with Ken just prior to the beginning of this cruise, he was not ill nor was this expected. He told me of some upcoming cruises he and Pene had planned after this cruise.

For those that didn't know Ken, he was so full of laughter and life. He loved arranging private tours, at least one major one on each cruise he was on. I had the pleasure of being on a few of his tours and they were great.

Memory Eternal my friend.

My prayers go out to his family!

However, could anyone here think of a better way to go?

In your sleep, after a cruise vacation, next to your wife?

If that's the way I get to go, I'll consider myself blessed!

Peace to those who knew him.

I, too, feel a loss of a friend. Ken was a joy to be around and made our Brilliance OTS transatlantic a better cruise for his efforts and presence.

I have often said that I wanted to die on the last day of the last cruise I planned to take. Ken came darned near to doing that. It just wasn't the last one he planned to take.

Our prayers are with Pene and the family.

This happened to a very close friend of ours while we were on vacation together. His wife had a difficult time finding a plane to transport him home, as at the time United was the only airline to do so from the city we were in.

I posted my condolences on his thread, but I'd like to say that although I never met this couple, my heart goes out to Pene. I'm very sorry to hear this news. :(

What a shock. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Pene and the family. It was a pleasure to once again see Ken & Pene on the second leg Around the Horn and hoped to see them on another sailing. Having 3 close family members pass recently, we know how friends and family can help ease the pain by recalling fond memories. We had a great time with Ken & Pene's planned excursion in Ireland while on the Jewel, and were happy to see them again aboard the Mariner just a few weeks ago. Pene, may you find comfort in treasured memories. ~ Jane and Doug

Off the ship and in the hotel at the airport. Flight home at 0735 in the morning.

Great room.

Happy hour at 1730 with open bar and hor d'ourves.

I didn't see it, but I was told Ken was in a wheel chair the last couple days onboard. Consider it a rumor until someone verifies.

We had the priviledge of sailing with Ken and Pene on our Voyager TA in November 2006. Ken set up a wonderful private tour in Madeira and also suggested a wonderful pre-cruise hotel in Barcelona for CC folks.............the Hotel Continental Palacete.

Here's a link to the wonderful Ken and Pene website that is such a great resource for all who love cruising. http://kenandpene.com/

Our condolences go out to Pene and the family.

Rita and I were shocked and deeply saddened to hear the news about Ken. We had the distinct honor and privilege of knowing both Ken and Pene and sailing with them on the 2006 Jewel Westbound Transatlantic and again on the Liberty pre-inaugural. Our sympathy and prayers go out to Pene. :(

Thursday 12 February 2009

I’ll try to catch up as best I remember and add stuff from Judy’s blog.

One fun thing the 2nd leg was the day we ate at Johnny Rockets. Our waiter’s name was Herpaul.. I pointed at Judy and said I was herpaul. We had a lot of fun with that for a couple minutes/

Judy’s voice still comes and goes and she can’t get rid of a cough. Of course, many folks onboard are coughing and/or having a problem talking.

I’m still coughing and wheezing, but at least I can walk again even if it is slowly.

Medical report over.

The weather has been overall excellent with mostly sunny, clear skies and calm seas.

This is going to jump around as I remember things.

3rd leg slot tournament was the worst of the three. We all put in $20 and lost almost half of it. Got back $10 and some change.

It’s 0130 on Friday the 13th.

Sea day. 1000 slot tournament where everyone got to bang on the machine for 5 minutes.

Party at Bobbie and Ricks at 1630.

Liars Club at 2230 with Abe, Captain Johnny and Simeon. The words were:

Whisterpoop – A slap up side the head.

S***tah – A small thorny tree or bush.

Kaggerkak – An albino cockroach, (might not be spelled right).

Cockermouth – A small town in the UK.

Today, Valentines Day with dinner at Chops. The sea day before Acapulco.

Paul hope you are well. :)

Rick and Bobbie's parties are the best!!!! :):):)

I'm very sorry to hear about Ken. I saw him the morning after we left Salvador and he had bruises all up and down his arms. He said that he had fallen and that he was on Plavix which led to all the bruising. With all that he was his usual cheerful self. The Transatlantics just won't be the same without him.

I am so sorry to hear of this sad ending to this amazing cruise. I did not know Ken, but from the page linked here, I found this page that they had set up about their planned Mariner pre-inaugural, starting today (Friday). There is a photo of Ken and Pene, for those who didn't know them.

Judy and I arrived home safe and sound at about 1900 today with only 2 minor glitches.

We arrived at LAX about 0620 for our 0735 flight only to be told it had been canceled and we were now on the 0800 flight. Went inside to checkin only to find out we had been bumped from first class that we had paid for to coach from LAX to DFW. Still in first class from DFW to TPA.

American will be hearing from me.

Other than that - easy flight and all our luggage made it.

We will write a review in the next week and post pictures on webshots.

I won a lot of money in the casino, gave a lot of it back, but still brought home $6000 of their money. It was a successful cruise.

Welcome home, Paul and Judy. Sorry to hear of your problems on the flight home. When we encountered a somewhat similar problem with our American Airlines flight home from Santo Domingo last year (our flight to Miami was delayed, so they put us on a flight to San Juan and we connected to a Boston bound flight that actually got us home earlier than our original flights would have), we got an email from American apologizing for our being "inconvenienced" and giving each of us a bonus 3000 frequent flyer miles. That was one of the few times I was actually impressed by AA.:)

Pene, you and Ken are much loved. We will all miss Ken. I spent time this afternoon reading through some of Ken's old emails. I cried and laughed all at the same time. He was so funny, even in email. Please take care. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. Chin up, dear lady.

Paul...........glad that Judy and you made it home safely! Bobbie's mom and dad has a similar experience in LAX.........their Southwest flight to Phoenix had been cancelled, and they had to wait another 3 hours for the next available flight.

They are both very tired today......and Bobbie's dad was off to his doctor to see if the Pneumonia had returned. We won't know the results till Monday!

It was wonderful to finally meet Judy and you..........and great fun crusing with both of you!!:)

Let's do it again!!:D

Rick
