Soot a problem?: Only one day, did we wake to find quite a bit of soot on the balcony

Problems/comments: see below.

We have just returned from the Solstice and we had cabin 6242 while my in-laws had 6240 (both on the back end of the hump).

There is a noise problem with these cabins - a sort of engine humming sound, which is constant, 24hrs a day, regardless of the sea conditions or even if the ship was at sea or in port. It was so bad, that we had to be moved, as we had 2 pretty sleepless nights, including Christmas Eve

The Housekeeping maintenance manager (I think it was), came with an engineer, who confirmed it was a known issue, and there was nothing they could do to resolve the problem. It's to do with the piping taking the exhaust from the engines to the funnels on the top, which are inside the walls across the hallway - not sure if the noise is the engine, or fans within the pipes, but I know it was heard from within 6240 and 6242. From walking the hallways, it would possibly affect 6244 and 6246 too, maybe even as far as 6248, 6250 (and similar on the port side 6241, 6243,6245,6247,6249,6251). From walking in the hallways, the nose/vibration, then was ok, then reoccurred further down the ship (the rear most funnel piping), but I did not record the cabin numbers located here, but again it would possibly have affected 4-6 rooms on both sides of the ship.

I'm surprised that more has not been mentioned on this topic here, but maybe I just did not search right, while researching the cabins. Also, it will affect people who have more sensitive hearing, as while we could clearly hear it from within my in-laws cabin (6240), they were ok with it - I guess there are some advantages to having some hearing loss in later life

The initial report was handled well by the Celebrity housekeeping maintenance and guest relations, however, the Housekeeping maintenance manager told us he would sort it with guest relations to have us moved if possible. After a few hours of not hearing back, we visited guest relations, and were not so well treated. The guest relations staff member just appeared to want us to go away, and kept telling us that it was being looked into and as the ship was full, there were no available cabins anyway. When we kept on and insisted we see the guest relations supervisor, she eventually went to the office around the back and when she came back, we did in fact get another cabin (8301) - funny how this had only just then became available, as we were at sea that day. This did spoil our Christmas day, but at least it ended well, and 8301 was a great cabin, but with a smaller balcony – and although it had vibration within the cabin, I think this is felt thought the ship.

 

I just noticed on my photo stream that cabin 6245 portside on Celebrity Silhouette had big orange evac boats just below the balcony, which was an annoying obstruction that I thought wouldn't matter, but it did. So I arrived at this forum because I wanted to post a photo of it for future users.

 

 

We were also just above a smoking area but never noticed that on our balcony.

 

Then I read the enclosed mention of noise and remembered that the first 36 hours in our cabin was very noisy. The sound resembled a jet engine on take off, with serious vibrations. We called the desk and of course before the service fellow arrived, the noise stopped. This happened three times. Then the noise stopped and never happened again. So cabin 6245, although a great location near elevators, did have some problems, but we did not ask to be moved..everything otherwise was fine.

We were assigned 6245 as an upgrade from our Balcony guarantee category.

Hi,

No this is Silhouette but same class as reflection.

Your cabin is port side. It depends which direction the ship is sailing if you get sun or not.

That balcony is shady at the back but you should get sun further forward.

If you go to the celebrity site and click on plan a cruise, then ships, you can explore the ship.

QUIET?: Yes except for exceptional noise and vibration from bow thrusters and cable motors approaching and during docking. Only a problem when docking early in the morning . (Never had this on same position cabin on Infinity)

BALCONY VIEW: Forward over helicopter landing pad. Great views approaching land - they even wash the windows automatically!

WIND A PROBLEM?: No

SOOT A PROBLEM?: No

PROBLEMS/COMMENTS:One of the two furthest room from all bars and restaurants - great for walking off that extra helping at breakfast and absolutely no passing traffic or any other ship-board noise (except as above). Room seemed more spacious than usual Ocean View/Balcony staterooms. Our luggage all fitted under the, very comfortable bed. Small, lumpy pillows though. Wardrobe not quite wide enough for hangers to fit straight but useful double height hanging rail over half the width. Bathroom had great (fixed) shower, plenty of cupboard space but enormously long tap that prevented one washing one's face over sink without getting water on the floor. Most odd. Attendant service impeccable and unobtrusive. Only one pillow chocolate during the two week cruise but three towel animals:)

PROBLEMS/COMMENTS: The room was perfect for 2 people, loved laying in bed watching return trip from Tracy Arm Fjord. The next room 8291 shares the same alcove for the entry doors. Balcony partition opened by Stewart so that was a plus. No complaints, loved being aft where it is so convenient just behind the hump which has the elevators nearby.

Problems/comments: This was a Baltic cruise. Embarkation and debarkation occurred on Deck 5 immediately below this cabin. We could hear every "ding" as passenger cards were scanned. This occurred again at the port in Zeebrugge. Noise was also heard a couple of hours before arriving in Zebrugge at 7:00am and Southampton at 5:30am as preparations for disembarkation were made. We heard no noise from the "Crew Only" door located across the hall from this cabin. We did notice some smoke from the smoking area below this cabin on deck 5. We would probably stay in this cabin again if it were the best available. Just be aware of the drawbacks. Would probably not have issues with embarkation or debarkation on Caribbean cruises since these activities take place on decks 2 and 3 in the Caribbean.

Balcony View - Great view with just a minor obstruction with a jump boat located in front on balcony -- hardly noticeable

 

Balcony Size? Normal or oversized for class? - Hump cabin balcony about 3 times the size of a normal balcony

 

Was wind a problem? Not at all

 

If an aft cabin, was soot a problem? n/a

 

Any specific problems with this cabin? As mentioned in another post, this cabin has some type of engine or fan noise -- quite loud in the bathroom area -- as well as a very audible draining noise from the shower. The engine noise can also be heard in the hallway in front of room 6240 and 6242. From our bed, which was located near the balcony, it was also audible but more like white noise so didn't bother us one little bit. It kind of drowned out any creaks and cracks that you might otherwise hear with a moving vessel. I could understand why some may not think this acceptable but we would not hesitate to book this room again.

 

Any other comments? The location of this room was perfect for us. This is a nice midship room and so convenient for the coffee in the morning from Café al Bacio, the internet café, the martini bar, casino and dining areas. I would book this room location in a heart beat. If you are sensitive to the noise mentioned above, it does exist so might move aft a few cabins -- although the other balconies are definitely smaller. The large balcony could use a couple of foot stools, though.
