ucfknight07 Posted April 10, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 10, 2009 Just came across this article regarding Oasis... It mentions that RCI has obtained the exclusive rights to use the Broadway musical "Hairspray" at sea... Pretty interesting, and seems like this has the potential for similar deals on other RCI ships as well as other cruise lines. The article also discusses the AquaTheater - mentions the pool is a maximum of 18 feet. Pretty deep when you consider it's on a ship! There's also a video of a preview of the shows that will be in the AquaTheater. Whether or not you like the Oasis, you have to admit that its features are noteworthy engineering feats, and that the ship is setting new marks for the industry. cot427 Posted April 10, 2009 #3 Share Posted April 10, 2009 She said they are going to develope two shows for the ship? Do you think thats one for each ship, or Oasis will feature two shows?

HighlandCruzer Posted April 10, 2009 #5 Share Posted April 10, 2009 She said they are going to develope two shows for the ship? Do you think thats one for each ship, or Oasis will feature two shows? A full broadway show is several hours long so I would assume that the show would be the main show developed for the ship but shown on multiple nights to accommodate everyone. This will be a difficult show to schedule multiple showings around meals. The other I assume will be the typical vegas-style show. Personally I loved seeing Hairspray on broadway (and the movie) and would really enjoy seeing how RCCL handles a show this complex at sea.
negc Posted April 10, 2009 #6 Share Posted April 10, 2009 Thanks for posting the information. It should add to the buzz that already exists about this ship. NCL executives will probably feel even more frustrated when they compare reactions to Oasis to the comments about NCL Epic from even their biggest fans. MrPete Posted April 10, 2009 #7 Share Posted April 10, 2009 WOW! We saw "Hairspray" on Broadway and loved it. Oh, that will be fun. Us too. In fact, we are friends with one of the producers. I'll have to ask him about this.

RCI announced that they will perform each show four times in place of two. That means the same show for two different nights. Some evenings, some will go to the theater to see a show, some to the ice skating show and some to the Aqua theater.
ucfknight07 Posted April 11, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted April 11, 2009 She said they are going to develope two shows for the ship? Rare eroller Posted April 11, 2009 #13 Share Posted April 11, 2009 When the NORWAY was introduced back in 1979, broadway plays were featured in the beautiful theater. I won't say they were full scale, but pretty close. I will always remember seeing Hello Dolly on the NORWAY even though I was only 13 at the time. I sailed on NORWAY two other times, and again Broadway plays were featured. It was pretty impressive. FYI the Aqua Pool on OASIS OF THE SEAS will hold more water then all the pools on FREEDOM OF THE SEAS combined. Ernie

NCL was always known as having some of the best entertainment at sea years ago.

ExploreroftheSeas92 Posted April 13, 2009 #17 Share Posted April 13, 2009 I wouldn't mind having to reserve seats for something like Hairspray, they would probably distribute the tickets just like they do for the ice shows on board.

I don't think that it is clear from the article that Hairspray will be performed in the Aquatheater. More likely it will be done in the main theater. The article joined the two reported shows to indicate the newest developments in onboard entertainment.:)

smoosh21 Posted April 13, 2009 #20 Share Posted April 13, 2009 Interesting and thank you for posting, it will be interesting to see a whole play at sea. Unfortunately, you will probably not see the whole play. They will probably do what they do in Vegas and that is trim the show down to 80-90 minutes so they can do it with no intermission. Although, I do think it is a good start to try and improve the quality of the shows on board. As somebody who enjoys going to live theater I am often very disappointed with the quality of the productions.

The version of Hairspray that will staged on Oasis will be the 90-minute edited version that was used in Las Vegas last year. So they will be able to stage the show at least twice a night on the same stage. They may use rotating actors to play the lead roles so that the actors do not over-work thier voices during the week. This was a good deal for RCCL. Usually you have to pay extra to re-arrange or edit down a production, but since this was already done for Las Vegas, that cost was elimanted. This sounds like an awesome development for RCCL. Many musicals have already been edited down to 90 minute productions that have played Vegas at different times. Chicago, Jersey Boys, Ave Q, The Producers, and currently playing at the Belagio is Phantom of the Opera. While Phantom is on-going and an exlcusive production for Vegas, the other shows I mentioned have already ran their runs in Vegas and could easily be acquired by RCCL to be used on thier ships. I would definitely sail on a ship because Hairspray or another well known musical is being performed.

The entertainment options are sounding very promising for Oasis and I can see that seven nights might not be sufficient to take them all in. Between the water shows at the Aqua Theater, Hairspray in the main theater, the ice shows in the skating venue, and the jazz and late-night comedy venues, we will have a hard time squeezing in a few minutes to leave our donations in the casino.
