Yes because CC would much rather be concerned with having permission asked then publicity from a link in the story.

Cruise critic received no publicity as they were not named in the fact lacking piece of fiction.:p

So Fred are you gonna sue for "compensation" and the "personal stress" it caused by them using your picture. I think a free cruise and of course tips paid for by the newspaper would be fair compensation.:p;):D

Did you even read it? See below.
The controversial email, listing those who had removed the prepaid service charge from their cruise bills, was found by a holidaymaker while they were on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Carnival Splendor ship. The story came to light when the passenger then alerted fellow travellers on the message boards of specialist cruise website CruiseCritic.co.uk.

You mean the cruise critic link in the story?

Actually they were. Read it again. :)

OOPs...missed that funky .uk link...LOL

I saw this "One cruise passenger, discussing the issue on an online forum, said:" and figured they were not going to mention the site.

The so called article stats out with this...

An email picking out the names of holidaymakers who opted out of a pre-paid tip to staff on a cruise has caused uproar after passengers discovered it pinned to a wall in crew quarters.

Fred....did the galley tour go down to the crews quarters?

Were you and Mere in an uproar after discovering it? LOL

Heck it did not even cause an uproar here...they need to read a smoking thread if they want an uproar...LMAO

This isnt unique to Splendor. I actually saw a similar thing last year during a galley tour on Legend.

Also on Liberty in a casual conversation with a waiter he mentioned that they had a list of passengers who did not tip.

I guess I didnt realize the significance of it at the time.

That was probably the list from the cruise before.

Carnival stated that they let the crew know about this information, but it is after they are no longer servicing these guests....which makes sense.

This list on the Splendor was probably some of the 500 people who got off in Long Beach. (especially since most of them would have been removing the tips they were not going to be using...since they were leaving the ship)

Not really interested if CC granted permission or not. I'm glad Fred saw the list and posted a picture on the site. As discussed ofter here, we all felt this was happening but couldn't confirm, by Fred seeing and posting, it confirmed our beliefs.

Could it be possible that CC GAVE the article to this paper for some free publicity? I'm sure that kind of thing happens all the time.

Prolly not the kind of publicity they want, tho...

The list makes a lot of sense AFTER the cruise so they can figure out who might have been unhappy with their service, or who tipped in cash so it can be distributed properly. IMO they have a right to see that info. The only screwup in this case was posting it before the end of the cruise.

Having said that, do we know for sure that the list did not refer to the previous week's cruise? (I saw the date, but that was the date of the memo, not necessarily the date of the cruise).

Agreed.

People are getting hung up on requiring CCs permission, which is simply not so.

Also, if CC did not distribute the pic to the Daily Mail, which *is* allowed, and the newspaper simply lifted it, as I suspect happened, they (Daily Mail) still need to obtain Fred's permission.

Personally, I think someone is in BIG trouble.... I also don't believe that this was a mistake and it shouldn't have been posted.. What I believe is that it was a mistake that Wennfred had access to see it, take a picture of it and post it.... I believe the mistake was that Carnival got caught and tried getting out of it. A BIG mistake was also made by whomever was taking them on the galley tour.

Yes, Wennfred might also have wandered off course :) but I'm glad he did... Although we have never removed our tips from the Sign n Sail, I personally think it stinks that such a list even exists... Service should remain the same regardless of who tips and who doesn't.

100% correct here. Carnival is now trying to cover their butt. How many times have we read right here on CC that the crew members know who removes their gratuities and who doesn't. Carnival did get caught and now is trying to cover it up.

Tipping is of a personal nature. What Carnival and some other lines have is not tipping but a service charge which I think should be added to the price of the cruise up front. I firmly believe in tipping as most of the staff works their rear ends off all week to make sure that everyone has a great vacation and I myself do not like stiffers but there are some that prefer to tip the old way which is to personally hand each crew member their tip and thank them.

I love British vocabulary. We are "holidaymakers". :) That's kinda cute.

I've been told us Canadians give ourselves away when we say we are on "holiday" rather than "vacation" or the dreaded "vaca".

Great point. It is quite possible. I admit while I wouldnt know the names of passengers, past or present, I just know I saw a similar type of list. It could have been from the previous week.

I just didnt think much of it then.

We agree again. I don't think they got either party's permission either.

By CC, I was referring to Cruise Critic -- and this would be exactly the kind of publicity that would work out well for them. Many future cruisers who have previously never heard of Cruise Critic might read this article and wonder what other kind of inside info can they find out here and wander over to take a look. Anything with a bit of controversy would probably draw a small crowd.
