BritChickBN1 Posted January 31, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 31, 2014 We're waiting to be walked over to pier 88 from pier 90 where we checked in. The bus light hotel has taken over pier 88. Quick question, which MDR is open for lunch and where can I find it? Thanks. -Ginger Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

RVachon Posted January 31, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 31, 2014 One of the passengers posted on facebook group that the fire was just a transformer that overheated in the casino area. Other than the smell of burnt electrical, nothing was noticeable.

Wife8 Posted January 31, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 31, 2014 Yesterday there was a burned out transformer which caused smoke on deck 7 in the VIP section of the casino. We were having breakfast when captain announced this and we were updated frequently. We had to go back to our cabins for about 90 minutes. Then we could go out but had to avoid decks 6,7 and 8 midship for about another hour. They said they needed the ship area clear to allow the maintenance crew to get the smoke out. We went to casino later that day and you could definitely smell the smoke. Captain said there was never an open fire but did alarm us a bit when he said they might have to cut off power for a while. Thankfully that did not happen and all was well. However, disembarkation was a nightmare. We were in the Haven and supposed to get priority but we're not able to leave ship until about 9:45am to proceed to area where bags were. Not all our bags were out yet and it took at least another 30 minutes to find our bags. A porter then took us to the area where limos pick you up. We called our driver and told him where we were. After another 20 minutes, he called and told us he was not allowed to get to that area due to Budweiser renting the are for the Super Bowl. We had to go across 12th Ave and meet him on the street, which took another 20 minutes. I was frozen! I am still cold and doing my fifth laundry load. Will post a review later. There are always some small issues but you can't let them dampen your vacation. Have to go with the flow. Before boarding our last cruise, a lady said it was so bad. That week was one of the best cruises we had. To each their own.
Bella,Kona & Flora Posted February 1, 2014 #18 Share Posted February 1, 2014 Just got off breakaway yesterday. On Day 12 a transformer overheated in the walls of casino. Captain handled this problem wonderfully. updates were announced every 5 - 10 minutes. Passengers were asked to return to their cabins, elevators were shut off. When allowed to leave the cabins, mid section of decks 6,7,& 8 were restricted but otherwise we were allowed access to rest of the ship. Disembarkation on 1/31 was a nightmare. We were told that there was a major shortage of Long Shore Men/Porters working. Apparently on the next 2 night cruise to no where, it was "carry on your own luggage" only without porter service. Removing luggage off the ship (think 4200 passengers) took a very long time. The group with yellow luggage tags was not called until around 10am. Yellow was the first group called. Lots of people lined up to disembark who didn't have yellow tags since it was already so late. Getting help in the terminal to move your luggage out to the street was insane. Most people seemed to shlep their huge amounts of luggage by themselves. We fortunately were able to get a porter to help us within a reasonable amount of time with the offer of a $20 tip. With the porter transporting our luggage, we went very quickly through customs. while the poor people handling their luggage were on long snaking lines The lines everywhere were bottle necked. Rare mking8288 Posted February 1, 2014 #20 Share Posted February 1, 2014 Travel light is the other note. For air travel of 5 to 7 days, we easily manage with a 22" carry-on rollers and a 2nd. bag (backpack or Timbuk2) and this is also easier if case the ship docked late on its return to port, where express self walk-off is an option (but, most of them - you cannot foreseen last minute delays at the pier ... due to porters, customs/immigration, pier or security, etc.) Another message is for those booking midday or early afternoon flight to fly home - the risks for not making it to the airport. Most of the time, reading CC, most cruises docking at NYC tend to & usually come up the lower bay by 6 AM and sail up the Hudson before 7 AM, and is docked & simply waiting for local clearance to start disembarkation by 8 AM - offloading 6,000 or 8,000+ pieces of luggages does take a while, even when it's all hands on deck & on the pier. cabincop Posted February 1, 2014 #22 Share Posted February 1, 2014 I was on breakaway jan5th-17. Same problem at disembarkation. I was told they don't have enough porters to unload & help people with luggage. There was a huge back log. I was in Haven left ship at 10 long lines, no help with luggage & had to drag my luggage to customs & onto street by myself. I refuse to cross 12th so I waited an hour to have my car get me. I don't think they have a system for the longer cruises & more luggage
agargoyle Posted February 1, 2014 #23 Share Posted February 1, 2014 We have sailed the Breakaway three times now. We must be leading a charmed life, disembarkation have been relatively painless. Our last trip in December they encouraged everyone to wait in their rooms. We had a balcony overlooking the terminal so I kept watch and when the "walk-offs" seems to slow down we headed out. We are Platinum members and get priority disembarkation tags. Found our bags easily and not a long wait at customs. Then a short walk to the car in the parking lot. We did notice that even then everyone that was being picked up was told to go across the street. From what I am reading -- glad we park and do not get picked up. Timing in life is everything I guess. phtormey Posted February 1, 2014 #24 Share Posted February 1, 2014 We also were on the January 5-17 Breakaway sailing and in the Haven. No problem getting a porter, our luggage or meeting our car directly outside the port. No need to cross the street and no problems. It's funny how different folks have different experiences! In fact he even helped us find our luggage in the Priority Section and loaded it on his cart for us. We were through Customs in no time and met our car service on the 2nd level - we did not have to cross the street either!
