Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

RCI Oasis Class is already doing that, and it seems to be working out just fine. I don't see any reason NCL cant do it on large ships.

Actually it is one casino, one half - smoking and one half - non-smoking. I'll leave it to those who have been in the casino on Oasis to say whether it works well or not.:)

I have...4 times. It's split into 2 halves, each side a mirror image of the other. The 2 halves are separated by the casino bar.

So is there anything to keep smoking from moving from one side to the other?

I have been on both Oasis and Allure and in their casinos. There is probably some form of ventilation on the smoking side of the casinos...but the non-smoking side is far from being smoke free as a result of the design. There are no walls between.

Same thing except for the physical design on NCL ships..there are already smoking and non-smoking sections in the casinos.

I think it's ridiculous that E-cigs are banned on balconies. I'm a smoker and have always enjoyed a book and cigarette on my balcony or in the casino. How does NCL plan on enforcing the E-cig ban on balconies? With a partition on each side and no tobacco smoke, unless you are leaning out over the rail , who will know? I plan to puff away on my next cruise. To those who complained about smoke in the casino, I DO think it will be much worse ,with non gamblers playing one cent, one line bets on the slots to enjoy their smokes. Not a problem for me since I love to gamble but I hope I can still find a seat !

I'm a no smoker and I'm glad about the change, but I also don't understand the e-cigarets ban,we had a couple join us and he used e-cigarettes and it never bothered us at all he we were sitting next to him on our balcony so I don't understand that.I do however agree 100% with the real cigarettes

So something like a forced air system to create a "virtual" wall which kind of works.

The E cigs look identical to a real cig. So in order to avoid mistaken identity or a flood of calls to the pursers that someone 25 balconies down is smoking they banned them. They still expel nicotene and other chemicals into the air.

There are other types of vapor apparatus that many people use that do not look like a cig at all.

It's been many years since I have seen machines with minimum one cent, one line bets. In fact the minimums I have seen recently have been 35-40 cent spins. Non gamblers might find their stint in the casino to be a little more costly than they thought.

Odd, since we played !¢ and 2¢ machines on the Breakaway, Gem, Jewel, Star and Dawn. :D

It's 1-2 cents per line. Would be a waste to play one line. And a lot of newer games start at minimum bet not just one line.

It is true that most newer penny slots have a minimum bet of 40 cents or something near that. You can find some that still offer one penny, one line.

And I have encountered a few e-cigs that smelled bad.

And I have encountered more than a few people that smelled bad. ;-)

I am not trying to pick on you, but I think we all can agree that occasional objectionable odors should not be the subject of rules of exclusion (or should NCL publish a list of acceptable and non-acceptable perfumes and colognes? Or perhaps NCL should mandate a certain level of personal hygiene for it s passengers?)

The real concerns should be ones of health and safety.

And on that point, as I continue to maintain, NCL's new policy regarding e-cigs/vaporizers is misguided and actually detrimental to the health of many folks trying to quit tobacco through the use of e-cigs/vaporizers.

Even RCD1 ( see above) can produce no health-related reason to ban e-cigs/vaporizers on balconies. And his concern about the use of those devices in cabins rests on the unlikely possibility that vapor (which, unlike smoke, dissipates within seconds) could travel through a ventilation system designed to pump air into a cabin, not take air out.

If you are next to a vaper who is vaping something that smells bad to you, you could ask him/her to move or you could move yourself. Either way neither of you will have to move far - vapor, again unlike smoke, does not travel far before it is gone and odorless.

This is the last one for me and you guys can have a little more room in the sandbox.. ;)

If ANYone thinks NCL is going to harass people for smoking in the casino , Playing or Not, you are delusional ....

People have been running afoul of many more serious rules for as long as I have been cruising. And we all know the last thing any cruise line employee

wants to do is what ??? Anger a Pax.. They'd rather swallow dirt than confront a passenger..

Im just stating the obvious..

The Non-smokers have won the battle , but the war , its just begun..

Good luck.... out

I think this is great. Many times I've experienced discarded cigarette butts flying onto my balcony from other passengers. Glad I won't have to deal with that anymore. The biggest win for passengers however is not the smell nor the discarded butts, but how far this goes in terms of fire prevention.

Kudos to you NCL.

Sorry to disillusion you and everyone else here but enforcing a smoking rule on the ship be it on balcony or casino or wherever will be done by Ncl

Some if you seem to think Ncl will just look the other way with casino non playing smokers but face it they won't because the vast majority of cruisers do not smoke

While they seem to ignore chair hogs which btw are not a carcinogen they won't ignore smokers who don't follow the rules

Smoking regs are serious and will be enforced.

I think the difference is that e-cigarettes fall under the same rules as cigarettes, thus if I smell the same putrid smell from an e-cigarette on my balcony that I encountered in Las Vegas, I would call guest services and complain. Sorry, but it was disgusting. Smoke them in your cabin or smoke unflavored ones, but we shouldn't have to smell the flavored ones. Unfortunately, there are no rules about a person's body odor or how much perfume they put on and until there are rules, we just have to live with their smell. Edited by NLH Arizona

Comments like this make those non-smokers, like me, that didn't complain (the only thing I've complained about is the flavored e-cigarettes that smell awful), feel that maybe I should switch sides and join the complainers, since some smokers obviously think it is now war. I don't think those that complained, whould ever what to compromise after reading your words.

The difference between enforcing towels on chairs and enforcing people taking up machines without playing is $$.

If people who want to gamble can't gamble because all seats are taken by people not playing (or making only the pretense of playing), I'm sure it will be addressed.

Other cruise lines already restrict indoor smoking to casinos only and from what I have seen, no, they do not kick people out who are just in there having a smoke.

Apply a little common sense here, people. Not everyone in a casino is actively gambling. Do they kick people out who are just standing there watching a table, or watching a friend at a slot machine, or watching a game on one of the tv's? Of course not. And they're not going to kick out smokers either. There's no reason to.

Besides, casino have bars. Usually, the smokers just congregate in that area. And also, from what I have seen, the casino isn't even usually the go-to place for a smoke anyways. It's usually the outdoor promenade deck. If you're going somewhere to smoke because you can't do it on your balcony, why would you go to the casino and not the promenade deck? Again, common sense. The casino will be no more worse or better than it already is.

Uh, not quite. The vapor may not be visible within a few seconds, but the fine particle linger for a substantial period once they are in the air. The issue with cabins is air is forced into the cabin, but guess what since the pressure in the cabin remains constant the air has to go somewhere. The cabins are not sealed units with their own exhaust system. That somewhere is usually into the hallway which is also enclosed space.

It is absolutely NOT a war and glad someone else sees that

It is just about common sense and logic and safety and health
