Rare sparks1093 Posted September 6, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 6, 2013 What is cheapest way to stay connected while away. Calling and Internet options The cheapest way is to take your laptop ashore and find a place with free wi-fi. Second cheapest is have international calling added to your cellphone for the time that you are gone (you might need to pay for one month) and call when you are ashore. Buying the onboard internet package would probably be less expensive than paying for cellphone calls (but many ships have ship to shore from your cabin phone which would be less expensive then a cellphone call). (If you use the onboard internet compose your email's offline in order to save minutes.) Rare Keith1010 Posted September 6, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 6, 2013 In general off and on the ship the cheapest way is via internet while the ship is outside the United States. Keith
paul929207 Posted September 6, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 6, 2013 Cheap and on the ship will not work. In most ports there are places offering free wifi. Some will require a purchase like a cup of coffee or a beer. Check with your waiter or cabin steward. They know the good places.
cruiserking Posted September 6, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 6, 2013 What is cheapest way to stay connected while away. Calling and Internet options You can purchase the most basic internet minutes for around $25 or so and stay in touch with emails. Also, in port follow the crew to the nearest wifi or phone card kiosk where you can buy inexpensive phone cards to make calls. Jonathan
dsrdsrdsr Posted September 6, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 6, 2013 Take a laptop and type your message while not logged in to the ship's system. Then log in, copy and paste your message into your email server, copy and paste any incoming messages from your email server to your laptop, and log out of the ship's system. You can usually do all that in a minute. Then read the emails at leisure.
Rare Keith1010 Posted September 6, 2013 #8 Share Posted September 6, 2013 In general, we find that e mails is the cheapest way we can communicate. Keith
Nebr.cruiser Posted September 6, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 6, 2013 We usually post on Facebook--or emails. On Princess we each get a lot of free minutes, so that helps. Also, there are usually really cheap internet cafes in ports, often right at the port. That works well too. Phoning seems to be more of a hassle, especially when there are big time zone differences, and other problems.
xxoocruiser Posted September 6, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 6, 2013 If needed place calls when I get off in port to avoid the ships satellite charges. I also carry an international phone card that can be used in port which is cheaper than using the cell phones. Ships internet is very slow and even the cheapest package will be used up very quickly. sail7seas Posted September 6, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 6, 2013 Buy an internet package and e-mail or use free/low cost internet centers in ports. Ask crew where the best shore internet cafes are. They always know.
sail7seas Posted September 6, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 6, 2013 Ask your dining steward, bartender, cabin steward where are the best internet spots ashore. They know where the best ones are located. :) Bring your netbook or tablet etc
