Sheheen's comment about drifting casino smoke, really????

If you smoke, I'm sorry, but I can't stand it. Not only is it a health hazard, it drives my sinus' crazy. Don't care that you do it, I just don't want to be subjected to it and will stay away from it, so have at it! I can find plenty to do without going near the casino or shops or whatever else is near.

What I find interesting is the comment in the article with a link below, from Sheheen. He says there have been one or two comments about the drifting casino smoke on Breakaway, not enough for anything to be done about it apparently. Can the man not read??? I can't even count the number of reviews, videos, etc., that have mentioned this issue. Really???? I don't have much confidence in someone who makes such an uninformed comment. Of course, maybe he does know and those are the changes being made on the new ships, that he won't mention yet...because no one has complained! LOL!

As far as balcony smoking, If NCL wants to allow widespread smoking on balconies without confining it to certain ones, which I know would probably be a logistical nightmare, that is fine. If someone's smoke drifts to my balcony, which hopefully it won't, I'll just have to think of something equally annoying to drift to theirs.... Fair's fair. Did I mention I cannot sing very well??? ;)

Just because people comment on it here on CC doesn't mean they leave comments directly with NCL, so his comment about the casino smoke might be accurate. CC posters are only about 2% (from what I've heard) of the cruisers out there.

Very true. We all have the ability to make choices. We made ours, even though we do not smoke either. :)

As far as Kevin Sheehan goes, he has no obligation to read what is written on these boards.

Not to mention, I don't think CC is really an overly big threat to NCL. Yes they treat the people in the M&G very well, but if you consider how small most M&G's are compared to the overall amount of passengers on a cruise, they are in fact a very small number of passengers to worry about what they think.

And I agree, everyone has choices, no one is forcing anyone to cruise on a ship that does not meet their needs. There are tons of lines that offer better no smoking options if that is someone's big concern.

Thanks for the warning, I'll be calling my PCC Monday to cancel my bookings.

HEY, my singing isn`t that bad, I used to be called on all the time to join different choirs.............oh wait.............I don`t smoke now.....don`t cancel your cruise.... it`s ok you can have the cabin next to us.....

Happy cruising..............don`t sweat the small stuff........life is too short

The casino makes too much money for NCL to mess with the formula. They are not going to make it non-smoking anytime soon. They would lose way too much revenue. Sheehan knows this and is fully aware of the complaints about the smoke but he cannot say in public they aint gonna do nuthin bout it. That might hurt sales. It's PR 101 people. You don't become the CEO of a huge corporation saying stupid stuff.

I, for one, did communicate directly with Mr. Sheheen's office. I suggested they "glass in" the casino to keep the smoke from wafting all over 678. I was told that they have air cleaners but I pointed out that they were not noticeable or effective on the Breakaway. They WERE effective on the Epic.

I cannot believe only myself and one other person took the time to contact them directly about this:rolleyes:

I wonder if Mr. Sheehan is a smoker.

Just askin'......

I was just off the Breakaway, and found the smoke aroma objectionable when passing thru the casino on deck 7, or by it on decks 6 and 8 as well.

I don't gamble, so don't really care if they allow smoking in the casino. Since it seems most gambler's do smoke, that is a good indoor space to allow it.

My objection is that it is located in the very hub of the ship, literally putting it 'in the face' of most passenger's. That is a strategy clearly driven by marketing. They should have put the casino at a location where it could be isolated, air-wise, such as the aft end of deck 5 perhaps, (though I'm not sure what that area is used for)...

It really wouldn't matter whether he did or not. Decisions made in a company the size of NCL have a board of people making those decisions not just one person.

Its not my experience that most gamblers smoke.

However on NCL ships, most gamblers end up back in their cabin stinking of smoke.

I have to agree with you on this one :) that said not always, my DH the odd night might drop $100 on the roulette table & on occasion I've stood behind him & had someone blowing smoke on me....in this case I tap DH on shoulder & tell him he can find me in the jewelry store ! It might also be that the smokers aren't gamblers off ship but become gamblers so that they can smoke :D I know I would if I was a smoker., but I guess maybe this is the point of allowing smoking in the casino.

Good to know this. We were seriously considering NCL for our next cruise after seeing the write up for the Breakaway in the USA Today. However, my wife has a nose like a blood hound and she complained incessantly about casino smoke on our last cruise, Carnival. Looks like it is Disney or Celebrity for us!

But probably representative of the other 98%

No way. We are the (self-selected) elite! :D

But why do they bother doing M&Gs for CC members at all, then? And nothing for all the other cruise discussion forums out there? I don't know about being a "big threat", we're more like an irritating chronic rash that without constant vigilance could flare up into something more serious.

Don't get me wrong, they are doing PR, any smart company would if they were requested to help set something up for 1% or 2% of their cruisers. Not just a huge threat.

Besides this issue may not be as huge even on here as what some would have others believe.

Except for a few months that I wasn't on CC, I usually pipe into these threads just to give a balance, so NCL is not only hearing from one side. However, just like me it's usually the same voices all the time with only a couple added from either side. Looking like a lot of people are actually bickering over this but is actually not.

As for the casinos on the new builds. I agree with one non-smoking poster on these boards, they should have glassed the darn thing in when they were building it, at least it would have solved one issue. Poor design IMO.

However the good thing about leaving it open is that there's less smoke in the casino for us non-smoking gamblers  and those poor staff.

Incidentally, are there any smoking rules in the casino, e.g. can one player at a table object to another smoking? Or all smokers at one end of a table?

No, there are no "rules", if you don't like the smoke you can move, they will not stop a smoker or make them move. There are no places where smokes sit at one end and non smokers at another.

I witnessed the other person who complained directly to NCL. It was last July on the Breakaway! We were behind them in line and heard them complain.

Mystery Solved...

When we sailed the Breakaway there was a "non-smoking" section. But it was only open during the busiest times and there are no barriers to prevent smoke from other areas to waft in to that section. But....there is no active smoking permitted in that section.

Oh wow, another smoking thread. I am going to miss out on all the entertainment while I am on my cruise. <grin>

Have a safe journey to the port and have an excellent time on the Dawn!

Beakaway sounds too big, too crowded and too smoky. My perception on the basis of what I have read on here, and my own experience on past cruises with NCL, which have otherwise been most enjoyable. I may be off base re my perception however I am not prepared to spend the money cruising on it to find out for myself. NCL's policy is clear re smoking. If its no longer a good fit for the individual, choose another cruise line that is more restrictive of smoking onboard, as I have done.
