Southampton to Heathrow options

Suggestions / Advice please:

Our flight leaves Heathrow T4 @ around 5 pm and most of the disembarkation tours that leave Southampton, and go to Heathrow, do not allow enough time for this departure.

We have a few alternatives:

Private car with a Windsor tour (we have been to Stonehenge & Salisbury before) however, the most expensive option.

National Express Coach to Heathrow and either just lol about the airport for hours, or take a day room at the hotel to enable us to relax a little more comfortably. Anyone used the Yotel?

Hire a car from Southampton and drive to Heathrow with a stop off at Windsor Castle enroute. On this note, I have been quoted aprox 120 pound by Enterprise Hire Car in Southampton using a Europcar vehicle. Anyone had personal experience with this company please?

There are probably other options that I'm open to considering, so pls put them out there.

I've used Enterprise from time to time, a perfectly reputable outfit. But bear in mind extra costs for CDW excess cover, fuel, parking.

The obvious answer should be a private transfer to Windsor, then a taxi (about £30 or less) from Windsor to Heathrow.

Problem is that there's no left luggage facilities in Windsor. It's problematic anywhere outside of London since facilities were removed from rail & bus stations. Usually there's a hotel or pub that fills the gap, but a search of the web drew a blank for Windsor.

You could try costing-out a private transfer ship to Heathrow, then a bag-drop or left luggage, then the same car or a taxi to Windsor, then a taxi from Windsor to Heathrow.

That will dig into your time, but an early transfer (7.30am) will get you to Heathrow around 9.30 & Windsor by 10.30. You'd need to leave Windsor about 2 - 2.30, theoretical journey time Windsor-Heathrow is under half-an-hour & you'll want to check in about 2 hrs before your flight.

Substituting a bus for Southampton-Heathrow would cut too deeply into your time, the train would take just as long & for two people would cost about the same as a private transfer.

Sorry, a simple question but there's no simple answer.

Please ensure you understand the Yotel concept if you are thinking of booking it. The rooms are called cabins, but in reality it is more like a capsule hotel - great for a few hours napping, but not what you might have in mind for a day room to chill out in for a few hours :)

Thanks John Bull & Cotswold Eagle.

I have watched some You Tube videos for the Yotel so realise how claustrophobic it may be. Read also that you can buy lounge pass', so that may be another option to while away the hours.

Yes, John Bull, no easy answer. Thanks for your assistance & research anyway. Glad to read that Enterprise is reputable in your opinion.

Think in the finality of it comes down to cost V comfort perhaps!

One way to ease the pain of opening your wallet that much wider is to consider the overall daily cost of the entire vacation.

For choices like this, it turns big bucks into small beer. ;)

You are right JB...decided that about an hour ago. Hardly doing any tours as most of the ports are suitable for walking ourselves, so saving $'s there. Just when we compare the AUD to the pound it hurts a bit...but so what. Just waiting on a quote from one of the operators you recommended elsewhere: West Quay ...thanks!

car hire should be available from around £50 one way to heathrow. (+ damage waiver) if they are still doing the one way one days airport specials.

(Might have to pick up at southampton airport rather than the port area)

for example

https://www.europcar.co.uk/deals/one-way-airport-hire

2nd June 9:00 Southampton airport, 14:30 LHR

Octavia(big enough for 3 adults and luggage.

£57+£27 for zero excess cover(available cheaper standalone), fuel £10 should coiver it.

Unless you get off the ship early you will struggle to have time to do a touristy thing properly.

There is a Hilton at T4

Get off the ship as late as possible take the national express coach to T4 and have a leasurly lunch at the Hilton.

Eavesway Coaches do a transfer from Southampton Cruise Terminals to LHR, well they cannot access the Airport Bus Stn, but drop you off at the Renaissance Hotel, Bath Rd, you then catch the Hoppa Bus or Taxi to the Terminal. Cost is £48, pre paid only.

So even if you don't get away in coach until 10am, you are still at LHR by noon. Good luck.

There's no luggage storage at the London bus- and trainstations? Bummer..

Needing some storage for a few hours London shopping before a late evening flight out. :)

Sure there is. What train station are you thinking of specifically?

Not sure yet, still have to do some research.

Booked LHR flights yesterday, departure around 8.30pm and disembarking in Southampton in the morning, just looking for some casual shopping for a few hours before hopping back over the North Sea. Had a quick look into National Express bus, best fit?

FlyBe still had no dates further out than Oct 24 2015 for their SOU-AMS flights, been so for months now, needed a Oct 27th so it's via LHR now. :)

Thanks

There is left luggage at Waterloo station, which is where you will arrive if you take the train from Southampton. When you leave the platform and arrive at the main concourse, just turn left and keep going towards the exit, it's right beside (to see this for yourself, check out Google maps - they have a 'streetview' inside Waterloo station, très cool ).

No problem at main London stations, but no facilities in most OTHER towns and cities except at airports. In those places there is often a local hotel pub that offers the service - but none that I or the Internet knows of in Windsor.

Cruising out of Southampton in August & then to London for 3 days post cruise. My husband wants to see Stonehenge so I am looking for transportation on a saturday from the cruise port to Stonehenge then to our London hotel which is a Doubletree in Westminster area.

I have seen tours from Southampton to London but there multiple stops including Windsor, Salisbury & Stonehenge.

Has anyone just gone to Stonehenge then London ? There is so much to see & if stopping at Stonehenge would take up too much time then we may have to delete this from our plans.

Thanks
