    Tipping in Japan

On my very first trip to Japan (before I knew better, now I do), I attempted to tip the server in the executive lounge after breakfast at the Hilton Tokyo. My doing so appeared to cause him great embarrassment. He followed me out the door to return the money I left for him. I just didn't know any better and, shame on me, I didn't take time to learn about Japanese customs and proper etiquette prior to the trip.
  5. If you anticipate booking direct and then moving the booking to a TA, one word of advice. DON'T!! MSC makes it very difficult to move a booking that they are holding. The last time I did this (special circumstances necessitated I violate my own rule), it took MSC about 3 months to get the booking moved. Caused my TA and me to continue to hound them until they finally relented. My TA said he has experienced similar delays with other bookings in the past. The idea of TA vs no TA is much discussed on this board. I'll leave that discussion to others who will surely offer your their views.
  6. We were in F305 this past fall. Despite repeated calls to the purser's desk and maintenance along with several in-cabin visits from maintenance and management, we never had hot water in the cabin. Wife and I had to go up to 16 to the spa to shower. Add to this the fact that the HVAC system just plain didn't work, again, despite numerous visits from maintenance. It was either too warm or (after they came in and replaced the control head) so cold we had to hang hand towels from the register in an attempt to restrict the cold airflow. A real train wreck. NEVER again despite the aforementioned perks associated with an S7 cabin.
  7. You know that and I know that........oh well...........
  8. The Sucia/Pasmo card is the "coin of the realm" in Japan. Very few places they can't be used.
  9. Absolutely. Done it many times. The length of each segment of the B2B is irrelevant. As long as it's a B2B, you get it all. As an aside, note that this applies if your 14/5 is booked as two seperate cruises (two booking numbers) or as a single 19 day cruise. We always trade the complete mini-bar in for Diet Cokes. This eliminates the need to bring the Cokes on board with us at embarkation.
  10. You know that and I know that to be the case. But then there's ol' "Jack Sparrow" who would argue vociferously that he's bribing his way to strong pours with his largess.
  11. I installed the app on my iphone 13 and my wife's phone. After doing so, added yen from one of our credit cards that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee. When balance gets low, simply add funds right on the app. Very easy and efficient. The only downside is that any funds left on the app when you leave Japan can only be refunded to a Japanese bank account. Unless you have one of those, it's a use it or lose it proposition for any remaining funds. Spend it down towards the end of your trip. Also, unlike buying a physical Suica (or Pasmo) card, you do not have to pay a deposit on the card because there isn't one.
  12. Someone recently posted a link to a website dedicated to identifying and providing contact info for corporate executives. Anyone remember that website? Please and Thank You.
  13. TL;DR BUSY people on the receiving end of these missives.
  14. Winner of the Gold Star ๐ŸŒŸof this entire thread!!
  15. And enjoying a larger pour I'm sure!
  16. Your font is certainly bigger than mine. I'll give you that much.
  17. MSC provides each of us with a 10% discount (she, teachar - me LEO) off the base fare. Wondering if the $50 OBC is in addition to the discount we are given. Anyone else in a similar situation?
  18. Thanks for posting. I found the long form of the T&C and printed it to take along. Guess we'll see what happens with this discount when we board. Having a printed copy of their own T&C can't hurt to have in any shipboard discussion.
  19. The real world reality, irrespective of what one may desire it to be, is that DRESS CODE = DRESS SUGGESTION. In the words of one much much wiser than I, "It is what it is". And no amount of pax angst is going to change this fact.
