Banana15 Posted November 21, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2017 This may be a silly question, but I’ve never taken a cruise that stays in one port; especially for three days. Is it too much time in one spot? Obviously I go to places on vacation for more than three days at a time, but I usually have a car that can take me around. I’m just concerned that being in the same port for three days will get somewhat boring. Am I totally thinking about it too much? Also, any recommendations on the best ship for Bermuda cruises? I’m currently looking at NCL out of NY.
Langoustine Posted November 21, 2017 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2017 Three days is far too short for Bermuda. Three days if you don't ever leave the Dockyard area is far too long. Buses and taxis will take you everywhere.
SailBadtheSinner Posted November 21, 2017 #3 Share Posted November 21, 2017 I agree with the previous poster. 3 days is never long enough to do all that can be done in Bermuda. As for the cruise ship, the Escape or the Summit would be my choice. Just select a cruise ship whose stay is all weekdays. SBtS

SBtS Is there a reason you say weekdays? I know our cruise in May lands in Grand Cayman on a Sunday and a lot of the excursions are closed for the day. Is that why? Beachiekeen Posted November 21, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 21, 2017 Three days sounds so long but it's not. I want to go back already. The Escape from NY is great because it gets there on a Wednesday and you can go to Harbor Nights. Although we had a blast on the Dawn, when we go back, it will most likely be on the Escape or on Holland America which I am intrigued by because you are there 4 days and you dock in Hamilton instead of the dockyard. Arriving on Sunday you are at a slight disadvantage as no ferries run on Sunday and taxi service is limited and more expensive too I think. marco Posted November 21, 2017 #6 Share Posted November 21, 2017 3 days in NOT too long in Bermuda. My 1st choice would be HALs "Veendam" out of Boston only because it docks in Hamilton and not King's Wharf and is in Bermuda a bit longer than other ships. However, thier sailings to Bermuda are much more limited than "X" or NCL. 2nd choice would be the Summit" out of NJ. We have sailed on both more than once, and have cruised to Bermuda over 20 times in the past 30 yrs or so.

If so, were there a lot of Children onboard? I hate sounding like a Scrooge, but it is the one time my husband and I are kid free, so we like to cruise when there aren’t a lot of children on the ship. I know NCL sails more months, but I want warmer water temps, so I have to choose between the two. If HAL has less children, that would be nice. marco Posted November 22, 2017 #9 Share Posted November 22, 2017 We've always gone May/early June or Sept. Very few children then. Our neighbors went last year on NCL late June and I think she said there were 600 people 16 yrs old or younger. Never a lot of kids on any HAL sailing. A couple of years ago we did an Alaska cruise in August and I think there were maybe 20-25 kinds onboard. Over all, of HAL. "X" and NCL I think the fit and finish of the ship's public rooms, cabins, dining experience, overall ambiance of the on board experience, I'd rate HAL #1, "X" a VERY close 2nd, and NCL a very, very distant 3rd. Again, this just MY opinion. We've sailed at least 10 times on HAL and "X" and only once on NCL. We went twice this past summer on the "Veendam". We weren't planning on it, but whist on the cruise they said if you want to stay on and do it again, it's $199! So....we stayed on and did two in a row. Not many kids on either sailing. Rare Keith1010 Posted November 22, 2017 #10 Share Posted November 22, 2017 Three days is great. We have done it a few times and also spent another week there on a land vacation. So much to enjoy. Keith
Banana15 Posted November 22, 2017 Author #11 Share Posted November 22, 2017 Thanks for the input, everyone. I am actually working on convincing everyone to do HAL instead of NCL. I read that there isn’t a Craps table in the casino, which is kinda crummy since we like to do that at night on sea days. Only other downside is the pools during the day. I imagine we can suck it up to have less kids. Especially since kids would just take up the pool anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

You get the most time on HAL and get to dock in Hamilton. Sounds great to me! We had a blast on NCL though and no kids since we went in October. But like I said, the water park would be taken over on a ship with lots of kids, so it wouldn’t benefit me in the end regardless.

princeton12321 Posted November 27, 2017 #20 Share Posted November 27, 2017 Also Oceania Insignia will be doing a few trips in 2019 from NYC which will dock in St George's and Hamilton. It'll be nice to have an upmarket small ship available instead of the large mass market ones (although Veendam is a decent compromise in size). sansterre Posted January 6, 2018 #25 Share Posted January 6, 2018 We are taking HAL Veendam in May this year. Love that ship, and the crew! I think they do have a crap table in the Casino - can anyone confirm that? We took public transportation our to St. George one day, had a great tour by a local another day. I can't wait to do more on our own this time - maybe on scooters? Bermuda is amazingly beautiful.
