What is the legal drinking age on Half Moon Cay

We will be on Carnival this summer and our son is 20 and 7 months. We know no drinking on ship but what about drinks on their private island ? Is it still 21 or 18? Please no lectures just a simple answer.

Considering that the area is under control of Carnival, I would say that the same rules on the ship apply to on land...after all, no cash is used there, right? Don't you use your sail & sign card to pay for drinks?

21 on the ship, 21 on land.

Agree; it's a private island, not like going ashore in the rest of the Caribbean. Bartenders are the same ones that are on the ship, and you'll have to show your sign and sail card, as payments go on your onboard account. Your son won't be able to legally drink there.

Honestly the private island enforces the same rules as the cruise line does but my daughter who was under 18 has had drinks served to her at public places in both St. Maarten and San Juan. She even beat her mother to having the huge drink in the fishbowl I believe at Fat Tuesdays Bar (something named like that). :)

My experience is that most of the other countries we visit have a drinking age of 18 years. You can vote at 18. You can go to war and fight at 18. People are deemed responsible adults for all things EXCEPT alcohol. Makes absolutely no sense. Either you are a responsible adult, or you are not.

When I was a teenager in Alabama, the drinking age was 18 too. I don't think teens are any different now than they were back then, and I just don't get the 21 age now, but there it is!

Salty Dingo my words exactly!!! Honestly when my daughter turned 18 I would get the drinks and give them to my daughter limited of course! The past carnival cruise we were speaking to the bartender outside the casino bar and she asked my daughter is she happy to be on summer break and my daughter told her that she is a college student (which she is) and for some reason the bartender just asked her what she liked she said rum and coke and was served that and for the entire cruise that bar served her drinks. If they didn't we still would get her drinks (nomore than 3 of course but she never asked for a third in fact some evenings she not have any drinks but she sure loves her coffee). I agree with you totally and I am 47 myself! I had the privledge of being able to get alchohol at 18 why not my daughter, its like you said she can smoke, she can vote, she can get her drivers license at 17 and she can die for this country so in my book she can have drinks but rule never drink and drive ever ever ever! :)

Thank-you all for your straightforward replies and no lectures. I asked this question over on first time cruisers and was asked why I was asking the question.... Geez.

Son is just finishing up 2nd year at the Naval Academy and it would be nice for him to be able to have a beer legally with his Dad while on this cruise.

Kind of figured HMC was under Carnival rules but it never hurts to ask.

I guess its either Grand Turk or Nassau. If anyone knows of any non-touristy bars in either location please advise.

Try the Grand Turk or Bahamas boards and the locals from either place can give you a good, definite answer.

(I know Scubagirl on the Bahamas board is a goldmine for such questions)

Try Jack's Shack in Grand Turk...haven't been there yet. But plan on trying it out when we go there in just a few weeks. Lots of great comments about it on the Grand Turk board. It is down the beach a little bit from the Margaritaville that you'll see right when you get off the ship.

You asked the same question on this thread, which was in the "Ask a Cruise Question" forum. No one here asked yu why you were asking. Every post I read simply gave you the correct answer.

Jack's Shack is an absolute blast....I'd go there over Margaritaville in half a heartbeat.

You may find many 'didn't ask, don't tell' places while you cruise, both onboard and at the different ports. I'm just sayin.

I personally believe in 'old enough to serve, old enough to BE served.'

Yes, every post here did give me the correct answer. Thank-you. The first time I asked was on First Time Cruisers (Ask a Cruise Question) and right after Keiths reply directing me here to ask the same question was another reply asking me "why I wanted to know"(I guess that poster was the self- annointed Cruise Critic Cop). I see that post has been removed so I guess you can remove your own replies if one wishes.

It's a nice spot. Easy to walk to. I certainly didn't see them carding anyone:)

The legal drinking age, since it's part of the Bahamas, is 18. The age at which Carnival will allow people to drink on their property is almost certainly 21.

There should be a "best answer" button. Great and accurate response!

No, you can't remove your own posts. A moderator is the only one who can remove them. It's against board rules to discuss why a post was removed, but usually it's because someone complained that a post was in violation of board policies.
