Procedure on MSC to turn OBC into cash

Hi ............... I couldn't find this thread to report back, so thanks for 'bumping' it! :D I had posted how I got on in my Orchestra review but wasn't sure if you'd see it there.

Just for you, I deliberately didn't register a credit card at embarkation, so the only credit on my account was the €100 OBC that we had. I went to the casino on the first evening, registered my cruisecard in one of the machines and requested that €100 be transferred. When the machine showed the amount, I then cashed out, brought the voucher to the cashier, who exchanged it for €100 in cash. If I had as much OBC as you, I may not have done it in one go, just in case.

(I registered my credit card the following day).

Bea...Thank you very much for taking the time and going through the exact procedure that I will be doing in less than two weeks.

On a side note, the 100 in Euros that you had, was that listed as 50 per person? The reason I am asking is because when I printed out my E-Docs, it stated SB200USD, shipboard credit 200. When I did my original booking, MSC was giving 400 for YC members. Is the 200 listed on my E-Docs per person, or has MSC made a mistake and shortened us on what is owed? I figured I would confirm this through a MSC veteran like yourself before I call MSC who may not even talk to me anyway since I booked it through a TA. Thanks again.

In my case, it was €50 pp as part of a promotion. In your case (and I'm just surmising, SNJ) it was possibly $400 per cabin. You should query it with your TA and see what the original offer was - nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say.

Since yours was 50 pp and you had 100, I will assume that the 200 listed on my E-Docs is per person, which would be the 400 per cabin that we should have. I will confirm it though just to be safe. Looking forward to trying many of the espresso and chocolate items at Venchi.

I wish I had known this back in September. I did 4 future bookings on the last night of the cruise, after thinking I was told the OBC would be refundable the next morning. Obviously was not, so I lost half of it as my account had pretty much been kept current all along the cruise. I was upset to lose it and simply would not have booked until I got home, but live and learn.

SNJCruisers - DH & I booked under the same promotion. Our e-docs also listed $200USD prompting my call to MSC - they confirmed that $200USD was pp and that we could expect our account to reflect OBC of $400USD total.

Cathy.....Thank you for confirming this. I was procrastinating contacting them and you saved me a phone call. It was confusing that the E-docs only said 200. It was even more confusing in the "What's included" section on the MSC for Me app. It had 200 listed in bold print and then 200 listed in lighter print right below it. Thanks again. I'll just go and do a double withdrawal at the casino on day one for the OBC and then go right to customer services to set up my cc on file to cover gratuities and any other incidentals.

Hi hello, havjust returned from last week in YC seaside. Can confirm that this is as said above. The 200 cabin credit was per person giving us a total of 400. We had also booked when the Seaside bookings were released in 2015. Enjoy and have a wonderful time. The YC was truely amazing.

So... hope you don't mind a few questions? 1) Were you able to get a cooked to order omelette at the poolside grill or only in the dining room in the YC? 2) How were the lobster tails and giant prawns at lunch time at the grill? 3) How bad was it with no umbrellas on the one pool deck? 4) How were the shows? Heard that Timeless and Peter Punk were good and so was BeerProv comedy @ 11:30. 5) Favorite Bar? Thanks.

Will be on MSC for the first time in January on the Seaside, staying in an inside YC cabin. We received 400.00 in OBC from MSC since we booked it back in March of 2015. Since we will probably only use a portion of it on gratuities and minor purchases, I was wondering how to turn the 150.00 or so left over into cash. Is there a way to do it through the casino? Thanks for your help.

It may not be refundable, check it on board.

Unless you have a beverage package.... After gratuities and some minor onboard purchases (they do add up)...you may not have alot left. Not sure how their Casino works...But on Carnival its cashless. So I Just sat down at a slot and withdraw whatever amount and charged to the room. It offset my credit and brought the balance down to breakeven. Cashed out my credits at Casino cashier.... I would imagine MSC has a similar process in their casino

On my Divina cruise last week, the daily said we could recoup the cruise card balance in cash on disembarkation day:

SETTLING YOUR BILL

Payment by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Diners, JCB, American Express and Discover):

A copy of your bill will be delivered to your cabin. Any expenses incurred on disembarkation day will be charged directly to your credit card.

Payment by debit/prepaid card (Maestro, Visa Electron, Visa Debit, MasterCard Debit) or in cash: Check the bill received on the cabin the evening before disembarkation:

• Negative balance: for debit and prepaid card payments go to the Cruise Card Activation Points or to the Conciergerie - Guest service, deck 15; for cash payments to the Conciergerie - Guest service, deck 15.

Positive balance (minus sign on the bill): any remaining amount on your Cruise Card will be reimbursed in cash (in the onboard currency)
at the Conciergerie - Guest service deck 15.

I was on Divina in Sept. 2017 and they would not allow me to cash out the on-board credit, I had pre-purchased before I left. It was odd, that I could not get back my own money, let alone the other on-board credit. Oddly, it was a voyage that they also refused to honor the Voyager Club $50 pp credit, just saying corporate said not to give it this voyage.

The same thing happened to us on Divina. We pre-purchased OBC as well. They refused to give us cash back. It took several months before we were sent a check from corporate, and that was after many phone calls and a few letters.

So I just did this today at the casino. I guess I should have been more subtle because when I tried to cash out $200 right after I added it to my card and printed the voucher, the cashier refused to do it, telling me that they are not an ATM. He was going to void the transaction so I took the voucher back and a few hours went back and put it in a slot machine. I lost $5 on that one but then tried another machine and won $13 and printed a voucher for $205. Had no problem getting that in cash.

Thank you for this information.

I have quite a lot of OBC too and plan on leaving some on the account and cashing out the rest. I would have done as you but will do early on the first sea day and wait until later in the day and cash it out. Thank you so much for reporting, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for letting us know, MB. They must be on to it! I know that I just went straight to the casino, pulled the voucher from the machine and went straight to the cashier. I was in and out in a couple of minutes.

ETA Delighted to hear you came away with even more than you went in looking for! HaHa!

Yes, there was a delicious irony in the fact that by making things more difficult for me, I cost them an extra $5. It's possible that the guy I got was management. We had an unexpected sea day because we could not tender at Grand Cayman so the casino would not normally have been open, and it was early in the day.

Of course, had they not had the stupid policy of not refunding OBC from travel agents to your credit card, this would not have even been an issue. Fortunately I looked into it before it was too late and the money was gone.

Do you have pictures you can post of your inside YC cabin? What number was your cabin?

Sorry, I'm in 9003 (the front corner suite), not the YC. But I did see an inside YC and it's as small as people have said. Bathroom is the same as mine (tiny). No room for your luggage except under the bed.

I don't normally write reviews but feel I will have to after this cruise. Here's a preview: don't book 9003 on Seaside and this is our first and last cruise on MSC.

Oh, and I discovered that because I had originally used a debit card as my payment method, MSC actually withdrew $100 from my account when I connected it, even though I had OBC. So now I have to go back to the casino to withdraw more cash. And amusing, my debit card was actually charged $101, but my onboard account only credited $100. Guest services is having accounting look into that one.

Just as another point of reference, we were on the Meraviglia last week and I went to the casino cashier the last night of the cruise to cash out the remaining $43 euros. She gave me $40 euros and a credit slip for the remaining $3 euros. None of this was from OBC. No one else in my group had over $40 euros left, so I don't know what the deal was.

Please report back and let us know if it worked for you.
It was interesting as MisterBill had mentioned, but it did end up working out for us. On the first day of our cruise I set up the account and hit 300, then immediately printed out the voucher and after a few minutes went to cash it out. The guy asked for my cruise card and then asked me if I was going to utilize the casino at all since it was obvious that he swiped my card and knew what I did. He handed the voucher back to me and I held onto it till Thursday night, when a female employee took it and handed me 3 crisp new Benjamins. Since I get 1.5% back on my cc, it was worth 4.50 to me, so the slight hassle was OK.
