On day 2 we visited the Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium with a walk through underwater tunnel, ate lunch at the Grand Wailea Hotel and swam at Wailea Beach. On day 3 we stayed on board and treated it like a sea day. Granddaughter sailed almost free on this cruise.

Pictures of days 2 and 3, here:

Lava Flow from ship.

Day 4 Hilo. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must see. With a "Every Kid in a Park" pass 4th graders are able to

get their families in free. Madison got the 4th grade pass. Saved us $20. See the Devastation Trail, Thurston Lava Tube and steam vents.

At 9:45 PM on the port side, the POA cruised past the lava flow into the sea. Really impressive.

Kona is the (only) tender port. Seas were calm and the 5 minute trip, a breeze.

In Kona the Hulihee Palace is very interesting. It is full of Hawaiian Royalty items such as Kamehameha's 22 foot lance and 180 pound exercise stone.

Take the tour with a docent to get the full flavor of this historic site. No interior photos are allowed. The palace is just a block from the tender pier.

We also stopped at Scandinavian Shave Ice, kitty corner to the palace. Order a small, they are HUGE (see picture) They claim to be "Da best shave ice in Paradise". True dat. Back on board we went to the close up magic show @ Mardi Gras lounge.

Kona pictures are here:

Weather was beautiful throughout the cruise. At Kauai, Waimea Canyon is a must see. Drive a little further to the Kalalau lookout and if clear you can see

the Na Pali Coast valley from the top. We watched the Na Pali cruise by from our balcony on the Port side.

Back home. Granddaughter was sad to have to leave the ship. So were we. The POA is beautiful, the islands, more so. We will cruise on her again in the future. Thanks for following along. I'll answer questions but for now, Aloha!

thanks for posting all your lovely photos. Your granddaughter is a cutie and I know this cruise won't be her last one. We are going on POA in Feb. for our first visit to Hawaii and are trying to find out all we can before we go.

Thanks for your comments. I'm afraid we spoiled our grand daughter. Not only does she wants to cruise again but she wants to be in a suite. If you have any questions about the ship or islands feel free to ask.

Here are more pictures of cabin 10520, penthouse suite cat SE.

I have read that getting a suite on this cruise is really a waste of money because of the busy itinerary and you are really not taking advantage of the large space you have.

What is your take on that?

BTW.. great pictures.

If a suite is worth it on this cruise is personal. We always cruise in suites and this one was equivalent to a Sky Suite on Celebrity.

The suite perks on POA inculde:

1. Breakfast and lunch @ Cagney's

2. Priority embark, disembark and tender.

3. Welcome sparkling wine.

3. Daily fresh fruit and canapes delivered to cabin.

4. Butler and concierce service (they were great).

5. VIP party with captain and officers.

6. Free movies on in room TV including free pay-per-view.

7. Great cabin, plenty of space and huge balcony.

We were back on board by mid afternoon so enjoyed the suite and on board swimming and hot tubs.

For us it was well worth it. Your mileage may vary.

I was so into this cruise that I designed these shirts using grand daughter's art supplies.

Thanks, I also enjoyed doing this thread.

Late to this thread, but I'll be going on this cruise in December, and hoping its not too late to book excursions.

Is there a specific company or resource you used when booking excursions? Also sounded like you rented a car for some ports and did things solo?

We rented a car in every port but Kona. We are locals so know our way around but if you plan in advance and have a GPS app on your phone , it's easy. Check other reviews for tours. Roberts has a good reputation.

Howzit, you're on the hill, we're down in Kahala. My daughter is getting married in July and wants to come home and take the POA island cruise. Did you have a rental car in LIH? If so, shuttle to pick it up, or Kauai transit bus? Parking at port overnight for rental?
