July-Canada 5 Day Cruise aboard Canival Glory

You can expect a great itin. on this cruise. Halifax is very walkable and lots to see so start your googling. St. John is not so extra special but we took a private tour that brought us out to the lighthouses and the Bay of Fundy. We went in late August, and may do so again in2010, but do prepare for warm as well as cool weather. Capris and tees and a sweatshirt just in case for the ports. Normal slacks and top for dinner. Just bring at least enough for either kind of weather. We did but we got lucky and it was 90 degrees all 5 days.

Haven't been on this cruise but went to university on the East coast in Canada. Look for excursions to Peggy's Cove and Bay of Fundy are all must sees! Fit in lobster into one of these or both, after all you are on vacation and whom am I to judge. ;) Carnival does it okay but this is where you need to be to get it fresh off the boat! Not to be missed!

Have a wonderful time!

We've sailed the Canada itinerary 4 times (all on Victory) and also sailed Glory earlier this year on an Eastern Caribbean itinerary. As cruisin6 said, be prepared for all types of weather. We've had cool, foggy weather and warm, sunny weather (once we had both on the same cruise:eek:).

Saint John - We've mostly done walking tours. Don't miss the City Market, which I can best describe as a farmers market/craft fair/restaurant area. We also walked the Harbour Passage to the Reversing Rapids.

Halifax - The waterfront area has lots to offer, all within an easy walk of the ship. There are harbor tours (the Harbour Hopper duck tour is lots of fun), the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, lots of restaurants, and a casino. We did a tour to Peggy's Cove one year - unfortunately, the day we went was very foggy.

Glory should be a great ship to sail this itinerary - she has more options at the Lido deck buffet as well as a supper club (which I highly recommend - it's wonderful). If the Lido dining area is crowded, go upstairs to deck 10 - it's never crowded up there. Hopefully they'll still have the fish and chips restaurant on deck 10 - it's very good. Glory is going into drydock in January, so some of her features will change before next summer. Right now she doesn't have the seaside theater, but that will be added before you sail.

I've never been on a Carnival cruise. But understand that they cater to families and (relatively) younger adults. Is that true (does anyone know) on this itinerary? We're thinking about this coming July (a group of us) and I'm looking for more details, if anyone can offer them.

The summer Canada cruises out of NYC will have lots of families aboard, the fall cruises not as many. The five-day Canada cruise was the first cruise we booked, almost six years ago (was it really that long ago?) and we booked it because we were a family of five looking to try cruising, the cruise was only five days, and we could drive to the port. We found lots of people just like us.

We've done this itinerary on Victory and Triumph. Halifax is a great port. The boardwalk is about two miles long and very enjoyable to walk. It ends at a casino. There are other sights in Halifax as well. St. John is not much of a port.

One warning... the weather in Canada is unpredicatble, even during August. Our first time there, everyone on the ship would up buying fleeces and sweaters.

I did this itinerary on the Victory in July, 2008, and I sailed the Glory a few years ago. So, this is what I think you can expect:

1. An amazing sailaway from New York past the Statue of Liberty and under the Verazano Bridge.

2. In Saint John, New Brunswick excursions inlcuding the reversing falls & the Bay of Fundy, yummy seafood, Farmer's Market and people that are genuinely happy to have you visit.

3. In Halifax, Nova Scotia beautiful scenery on excursions or a great waterfront area to wander around with lots of pubs, more yummy seafood, the Alexander Keith Brewery & a casino.

4. A terrific ship with lots of families (if school is out) and a great staff.

5. Weather is the big variable so be prepared for warm and/or chilly and a high probability of fog and/or rain. We had it all on our cruise.

Here's a link to some of my pictures. http://travel.webshots.com/album/564684259efjZjs?start=0 Although the ship pix are of the Victory, there are some of the ports and sailaway. I truly enjoyed the itinerary and will probably pick up a last minute sailing again this summer.

I think Glory is my favorite of the Conquest-class ships. Layout-wise they're all the same, but I really liked the "colors" theme on Glory. If you've never sailed a Destiny-class or Conquest-class ship, the most important thing to keep in mind about the layout is that decks 3 and 4 do not go through from one end of the ship to the other because the midships dining room and galley block the way. Deck 5 is the Promenade deck, and it is the main passageway from forward to aft. If it's too crowded, you can always use one of the passenger decks - they all go through. I've never had a problem with the layout, but I know it drives some folks crazy.

I have some photos of Glory, as well as three Canada cruises on Victory, on my Webshots page: http://community.webshots.com/user/nybumpkin.

Great response dznymom and others. A few more questions, if I might? In looking through the Carnival excursions, I don't see prices (hummmm...) you purchase them on the ship. What might there be to do for us 'outdoorsy' types in St. John and/or Halifax? Any possibilities for kayaking / bicyling, that sort of thing? In some of the photos, these ports look like big cities as opposed to the smaller seaport towns I was hoping to find. What else can you tell me about these destinations?

I would do Halifax in early August. The weather is better and the international busker festival is in town there is alot to do and see that weekend. There are places that rent bikes to take a tour of the city and Point Plesent Park is a nice place for biking. I live in Halifax so anymore info you need just ask.:)

Okay Bigelow - You're On!! :)

July 3 is the date (why is the weather better in August?) We're going to be a large group of adults. Half will be happy just strolling around the city. The rest of us will want to DO something. When they speak of these destinations - Peggy's Cove, Bay of Fundy, etc., they all sound as though they are quite a distance away. So, if I rent a bicycle, am I pretty much confined to staying 'around town?' I'm not a shopper. I'd much rather experience some natural beauty or historical/cultural site. I've also been on-line looking for local tour/taxis. Got any suggestions on that? Thanks so much!

I loved Halifax and Saint John New Brunswick.

great people at both ports....some of the nicest locals at any ports of call.

My activities;

Halifax: Peggy's Cove tour and self walking tour from fortress to waterfront.

Saint John: Fundy National Park

If you're interested in outdoor activities - in Saint John we went to Rockwood Park. Absolutely beautiful! Tons of walking trails, and they also offer kayaking/rock climbing/canoeing, etc. We went with Freedom Tours (they just took us - we explored on our own) and chose to do the Nordic Walking pole option (like x-country poles) and had a great time for the morning there.

I would like to do this cruise but I want to go in the fall when the leaves are changing. When is the best time to see all the colour?

Usually late September is when the leaves are peaking- although it is different every year by a week or more. I would guess that you could figure it out by looking at the cruise prices- I would be willing to bet that the fares will jump during the weeks that the leaves are likely to be at their best.

Mid October the best time for pretty colors.:)

The Irving nature park in Saint John would be a nice place to walk in the fall. You would have to taxi there but it's not to far.

I've never done this itinerary, primarily because I'm from the east coast of Canada already... but there's lot of other from this area on here as well... you should make some friends and get a "local" to show you around :)

I hope you have a great trip :)
