Looking for the honest truth... will a Celebrity Cruise be super snobby?

Why my dear, if you have to ask the answer of course is yes yes yes. My social secretary is transcribing this from my verbal dictation as I pace about my penthouse suite wearing a dressing gown and ascot. I obtained an exemption from the balcony smoking ban so I could smoke my pipe while Barney and FooFoo do their ones and twos out on the expansive balcony -- I'm so glad I finally found something for the butler to do! I mean really, I have martinis to shake (not stirred, never stirred!). Bon voyage dah-ling!

One of our worst dinner experiences was on our first Celebrity cruise, 3 couples, one of them thought they hung the moon but it was quite uncomfortable, we should have just changed tables the first night but we hung in there only to have it be my worst dining couple of all cruises.

The second couple was Scottish and we had great fun with them.

You will find these experiences everywhere, now we cruise with friends and TABLE FOR 4 PLEASE, standing rule.

We love Celebrity and never, ever found people to be anything but friendly but the original post mentions Cunard. We have never sailed on Cunard but I believe that there are more British people on their ships and I know people from the US often find the British snobbish. Perhaps this is the reason for a misunderstanding. If so, it does need to be understood that cruises are becoming more international all the time and, therefore, increasingly important to learn to accept that different cultures appear, well, different.

What would the difference be between someone being super snobby and/or arrogant? I have read some posts on the Celebrity boards that would scare me off from booking based on just how pretentious they sounded, actually commenting they would ignore fellow passengers who were not dressed to their liking. You would think they were the Queen of England sending the offenders off to the guillotine. Last I checked Celebrity was still a mass market cruise line? Sure, if I did ever book them again I would not offend the Dress Code Police with my 'jeans' as pants, and would buy some dress slacks, but would not go so fat as buying or tenting a tux. A suit coat with tie is just fine. I do hope however that this pretension laid on so thickly on some of these threads is left at the check-in counter? I behave on vacation and yes, even though I paid for it and it took me five years to save up for it, I will still act and dress like a civilized human being. Any way you look at it, I refuse to let those with their nose stuck up in the air ruin my vacation. If they don't like it they can have their butler order dinner for them to be enjoyed in the confines of their suite. I don't plan on spending a whole lot of time in my Inside Cabin, so I will be out and about a lot, dressed in comfortable 'casual' attire and having the time of my life!!!! Bon voyage!

Based on reading these boards, I would likely have answered a resounding yes. Based on my single Celebrity cruise, however, absolutely not. Almost everyone I met onboard were simply enjoying the fact they could be on such an awesome vacation, regardless of age, ethnicity, whatever.

For what its worth, I would make exactly the same comments regarding a HAL cruise I was on a few years ago and my pre-cruise board surfing. For whatever reason, a lot of people come across on line as snobby.

I suspect that if you took the passengers off of a Celebrity ship and placed them in a neutral setting, you would be hard pressed to distinguish them from passengers from a Royal Caribbean, Princess,or even a Carnival ship. .

Oh no, you would if I was there. I'd be wearing my Celebrity t-shirt;) BTW, hi Bill. I hope you are well.

To answer the OP, no not snobby from what I have experienced. Enjoy your cruise.

Whatever happened to Danno? he hasn't been around in years. I remember he bought his own boat, but can't remember him posting in a long time about cruising.

I miss his posts. The last time I heard he lamented Horizon and Zenith leaving the fleet and wasn't into the new generation of large Celebrity ships. He was enjoying his sail boat.

You are always going to find those who want to die in their own arms but the vast majority of those who sail on Celebrity and not snobby. They know what they like which is why they choose a premium cruise line. Our experience has been, Celebrity does not attract a lot of children, maybe it's the time of year we cruise, the crowd tends to be a bit older, especially on the longer cruises, and everyone is there to have fun and enjoy themselves. You will enjoy your cruise so go for it. :)

Danno had some changes, primary of which he got his own boat. He really didn't want to be on anything bigger than Horizon or Zenith, I don't even think he went on Century. As far as Arno's pulling up that old thread, there were some things in there that have changed and were posted a lot at that time. ie:walkie talkie.

Remember that back then there was a dress code and it was enforced. You didn't wear the proper dress you didn't get into the dining room, theater, public rooms or casino.

In a lot of ways, Danno saw the changes that were to come after 2004 and didn't like them....

I miss Danno and we also lost Newt on the board around that time....

Very Funny Jeff!

To the OP never met any snooty people on Celebrity, however I have seen some rather snooty posts on these boards! Have a great Cruise!

I personally love the mix of outstanding service and low-key approach of Celebrity, but that's very subjective. Having cruised on Carnival, RCL, Princess and Celebrity which is our line of choice, I find the mix of people to be pretty similar. Each mainline cruiseline has a majority of more similar types because some are more family-oriented, or group-activity oriented, and others such as Celebrity are more low-key, but you'll find a very similar overall cross section.

You needn't worry about Snobs...unless you fit in with them, they will ignore you. Thank God.

So my advice in relation to this website is to concentrate on the Roll Calls to get a feel of a cruise, and come to the general threads such as this for specific info. You find a lot of info here. I enjoy discussing cruising so I'm active here. And yes, you'll see some strongly worded posts. But really look at the specific posts. Even those that strongly defend 'following the rules', most are just saying if you are going to break the rules, do it but don't ask permission from us, do as you wish. And yes, there are a few who get a kick out of bashing and blasting, but that occurs on any thread where you aren't face-face...that's why Roll Calls are so nice, we are going to meet up.

Love this thread. You learn a lot from even the tidbits and asides. With your permission 'Chicago Boy', I'd love to the borrow the 'those that would love to die in their own arms'. Great phrase that really catches what you mean. And as a correction (I know, I'm a knowitall, at least I think I am and that isnt being a snob, snobs don't know it all..... I do!), the Queen of England wouldn't sent you to the guillotine, she's send you to the Gallows. The French Queen/King would send you to the guillotine.

OP, enjoy your cruise, and enjoy all the changes in your life. And unlike Teajak, I love to give unsolicted advice, I'm a knowitall!

I'm also hoping to avoid a stuffy experience with lots of snooty judgmental people. I sailed Cunard once and swore I'd never go back. Has Celebrity become like that too? I'm hoping not but looking for the hard truth.

Thanks,

Francie

If you want the "honest" answer just see if the person replying has purchased a single drink package ;)

But seriously the only thing that i've found snooty on X is these boards. People on board are very nice and friendly.

+1 - I would have to agree completely.

There are certain posters that seem to have nothing else in their lives other than sniping at others on this board. The nasty and downright bizarre posts in some of those dress code threads are off the charts.

I just hope that we never had the misfortune of running into those particular posters on our first X cruise next year and if we did well, we'd just walk away, walk away, walk away...

Paulandfran - you asked a question that's been on my mind for months.

I was worried that we'd be dreading our actual time on the ship. With so much discussion about chair hogs and formal dress.

We would never think to spend so much time wondering if we were dressed right for a night out, as some of the threads lead me to believe that others do.

We've been doing mostly land vacations for the past 10 years with a few cruises thrown in each year. Usually Carnival or Royal Caribbean because they have ships that sail out of the ports closest to us. I haven't sailed Celebrity in awhile but was thinking of returning due to the great smoking policy (not allowing smoking on balconies). Love that! But... after reading some posts and based on some snooty comments I've received I'm wondering if Celebrity will be a good fit. I mean I can play the game and act the part but since I have to be in "business mode" for my business and hubby's career year round I'd really prefer an unpretentious atmosphere for a vacation. I'm not a party animal by any stretch and I'm usually in bed before midnight on a cruise but I'm also hoping to avoid a stuffy experience with lots of snooty judgmental people. I sailed Cunard once and swore I'd never go back. Has Celebrity become like that too? I'm hoping not but looking for the hard truth.

Thanks,

Francie

No, not at all. IMO its quieter (more reserved, boutique like-if possible on a 2800+pax basis). X vs Carnival- no comparison. X v RCL- slightly less family oriented (it appeared that there were fewer young children on X. X gave us great service, beautiful cabins & great itinerary. Enjoy

When you have 2,000 - 3,000 people on a ship who have paid (roughly) anywhere from $500 - $5000 or more per person you are going to get every type of people. Those that want to party and wear tank tops to dinner to those that expect to be waited on hand and foot and treat the staff like slaves. Luckily these folks are in the VAST MINORITY and the majority of people are nice, well traveled people that are just trying to have a good vacation, enjoy the service, the food, the ocean etc.

I don't think of Celebrity as snooty. But if you compare the cruise lines and ask the question: is Celebrity snootier than Carnival, NCL and Royal Caribbean? I would definitely say yes. Carnival, NCL and RCL people, in general, are a little more laid back and let their hair down more.

The Celebrity atmosphere is more subdued, more relaxed. Not a big party atmosphere.

I LOVE Celebrity food, service and the decor/ambience of their ships! However, I really enjoyed my NCL cruise because the passengers were a little more lively and willing to party a little bit more... and the cruise was just really fun!

They are all major mass market cruise lines, but I find subtle differences in the passengers. It also depends on the time of year you sail, the port you're sailing from, the length of the cruise etc.

These are just my opinions. Not trying to offend anyone or start up a war or anything. I have been on 3 Celebrity cruises, 2 Carnival, 1 NCL, and 1 RCL, so I definitely have a better perspective on Celebrity. Regardless, you'll find nice people on any cruise you go on!

I can't compare the other cruise lines you mention to Celebrity because I haven't been on them, but I'd disagree with the first quoted paragraph and agree with the second. Sometimes the definition of snooty gets confused. You'd have to be looking down your nose at someone to be considered snooty, but I don't think you aren't snooty if you are a bit more subdued and not so much into the "partee". There are passengers probably on all lines that are snooty. They're everywhere and I avoid them. In general terms the atmosphere on Celebrity I've found to be subdued which fits my style, but all the people I have met with have been delightful and looking to enjoy the experience of being onboard.

We always have a wonderful time on our cruises, whatever the cruise line. I don't think Celebrity is any different than the rest, except that the food is much better in the MDR than say RCCL's. We always go with other people and meet so many new people from all cultures and walks of life and no one seems to have any issues with anyone . Our adult daughter will tell you though, that there is not as much to do from her perspective on Celebrity, as there is on say RCCL. However, she reminds us daily just how much she loved her last Celebrity cruise and the smoke free atmosphere. In fact, she is still corresponding via email and Facebook with a good portion of the crew from the Eclipse-lol!
