Piano Bars to be Non-Smoking

Recommended Posts

Being a smoker, let me just say to other smokers...It's not that big a deal!

Up here in Montreal, you cannot smoke inside ANYWHERE. Not the bars, not the casino, I don't even smoke inside my own home!!!

On all my cruises, I have yet to smoke inside. I know you are allowed, but really, step outside for 3 mins and smoke your cig. It's just common courtesy.:D

I agree. I don't and can't smoke inside anymore, i find it pretty bad myself.

There are still some hotels that offer rooms were u can smoke.I tried this once a few Years ago, i have to say that it was just awful!

Have gotten so used to smoking outside that inside is unacceptable even for me.

When i booked my pre crusie room in Baltimore, i was offered a smoking room, i took a NON smoking room.

When i want one ,i will go out to have it.

It will be the same thing on the Pride, i will not smoke in my cabin. I will smoke where permitted BUT outdoors only!

And as for my balcony on the pride , if my neighbours are sitting outside and it bothers them i won't smoke while they are using the Balcony.

Like she said, common courtesy:)

So non-smokers, don't bash the smokers on their balconies when they are being pushed out of the venues inside the ship. At least smoking is still allowed on balconies. It's the one place they can go to without harrassment.

I feel that as they lessen the availability of smoking areas, that they should give smokers an opportunity to hold our seats. A smoker's biggest plight in a non-smoking venue is seat availability. We ,more times than not, become the victims of seat scavenging by non-smokers. When we physically have to leave our seats to feed our habit, some, yet not all, non-smokers will jump right into our temporarily vacated seats. If non-smokers want the courtesy of a smoke free environment, then give smokers the courtesy of holding our seats as we scurry off to smoke!

And I intend to monitor the piano bars to make sure that all the people who have been whining about this are actually IN the smoke-free piano bars

...just trying to get this straight. How exactly will you be monitoring people? Are you trolling the roll calls - then clicking the "find all posts" by everyone on the forum for hints of "anti-smoking" comments? On the ship, would you then be monitoring the piano bar only, or following people all over the ship with your clipboard recording their activities?

I'm just trying to understand exactly how you will be monitoring people.

I'm guessing you've gotten permission from Carnival for this type of activity - else it be considered creepy and lame.

To each his own I guess...but for me, that's not the way I want to spend my vacation.

Great new, now I can spend more than 15 seconds in the PB. Smokers that don't like the changes can just get over it. Please do go somewhere else so that we non-smokers don't have to smell you. In case you don't know it, you stink like a full 3 day old ashtray.

That was absolutely unnecessary, not to mention rude.

Bout bloody time! I am still amazed that this 23% minority still has the ability to foul the indoor air we breath anywhere! I love to go to the Piano bar, but after 15 minutes of breathing smoke so thick you could cut it with a knife, I have to leave! And a smoker will still piously sit there are try and tell you they have the "Right" to smoke!!! Your right to smoke ends, where another persons right to breath begins! I will defend you right to smoke, but not in the same air I have to breath! You want to smoke, go outside and burn for all I care.

And Carnival, heed this! We are Platimum members, but I refuse to go to the "Casino" and gag while losing the money that I no longer spend on ciagarettes! (I don't understand how some folks can afford it!!) I smoked a pack and a half for 31 years! But now that equates to about 7-8 bucks per day! Times 365= $2,737.50......that's a lot of cabbage!!! I think it is time to consider that roughly 78% of the people don't smoke! And of that number, probably 85% stay out of the casino because of the smoke, or 85% of the 78%. I think you will find that you would have a 25% increase in Casino traffic if we did not have to gag with the smoke!! And the Ship would stay so much cleaner, and the fire hazzard would be greatly reduced! Just look at the numbers in New York! The bar owners and restaurant owner (and smokers) all claimed business would go down. In the short term it did, but now business is way up because so many people, who would never go into a smoking place of business, are now turning out in large numbers!

LOL: Sounds like righteous indignation to me. Smokers stink, am I wrong? Just because they don’t smell themselves that does not mean that everyone else doesn’t.

Yeah well, it is rude to tell people they may have an undesireable odor about them.

I am sure most smokers are aware and conscious of it and don't need reminding.

The FDA tested a sample from China and found an ingredient that's in anti-freeze.....NOT ACTUAL anti-freeze!...I get so tired of hearing that tired old line mis-quoted by everyone! American companies are now making the liquid in labs, list ingredients on the bottles and contain nothing other than nicotine and food grade ingredients.

My doctor actually sends his smoking patients to a local e-cig store and other doctors in the state do also. My husband had open heart surgery back in Feb. and the respiratory therapist at that hospital caught him using an e-cig in his hospital room....her response was, "good for you" so from that point on he openly used it in his hospital room.

I know you had the best intentions, jessemon, when repeating the article but it's just not true....

Thanks Pop..I was just going to correct his misinformation.

Absolutely, I will hug a smoker a lot quicker than some people wearing what passes for "perfume" these days.....

the "smell" has nothing to do with it.....just the toxins in the smoke....

Sugah, I don't know you. You might smell like an A$$hole, but I'd never tell you that. It would be unnecessary, and rude.

The majority of smokers on this board try to be considerate. They understand what smoking does. Insulting people does nothing but belittle and cause strife. Who needs that on a cruise board?

I hear ya Linny !

Piano bars and smoking go hand in hand. Although I have just about quit the habit, I still think that's a bad decision.

Really??? Ask any singer - professional or amateur - if they would rather be in a room filled with smoke or clear air.

What a self -centered statement!

Maybe the smokers smoke to cover the stench you spew!!

I'm not a smoker, but cigarette smoke has never really bothered me. But this does make me happy because it is the one thing I read over and over and over again on these boards and elsewhere. "I want to go to the piano bar, but I can't/won't because of all the smoke." Now hopefully all the folks that avoided the piano bar because of the smoke will actually follow through on their words. These talented men and women deserve all the support they can get.

That being said, I do feel for the smokers as this is just another place they can't smoke, but realistically, it's for the best. I wonder if CCL will be able to recruit more/better piano players with this new policy?...it seems to me if one sings for a living, protecting their lungs would be a bit important to them.

Halos, Carnivals inability to recruit "more/better" piano players has little to do with the piano bar smoking policy and everything to do with the "life on board" policies.

A really good piano player can pack a room smoking or not.

But that being said, it seems a lot of the entertainers are really happy with this change.

Happy cruising,

Laura

I wouldn't go that far...for me it has as much to do with the smell. I don't like strong perfumes either. I guess my nose is super sensitive. When I use perfume, I spray my mid to lower back...but yeah, cigarette odor, to me is pretty offensive.

My parents smoked..when my kids were little, if they stayed with my parents for the day I would pick them up, bring them home, strip them down, toss them in the bathtub and wash their clothes immediately.

To me, it's just gross and sticks to everything, especially hair and clothing.

Have you ever cruised any other line?? I am pretty sure that the 'life on board' a cruise ship is pretty much equal across all mass market lines. Other lines have much better entertainers...top notch

entertainers/musicians, actually...

I am THRILLED with this news - here in Ottawa, Canada most public places are all smoke free (including bars, restaurants, etc) so it is always a bit of a 'reminder' when we go to the US and in restaurants they still ask if we want to a smoking or non-smoking table!

I do enjoy the piano bars and have had trouble staying in there for more than 15 mins due to all the smoke (and then the smell in clothes/hair, etc).... I hope to be able to spend more time there - providing the 'entertainer' is good (last 2 cruises the piano bar player was quite disappointing :( )

Many of the states in the US are now non-smoking in all indoor places and some are even going non-smoking in public outdoor places.

As for the comment about smoking in piano bars going hand in hand, that's ridiculous. We have piano bars in Massachusetts (Howl at the Moon in Boston has constant lines) and places are packed with non-smokers. People need to get past the attitude or habit that they NEED to smoke when drinking. Well, they have to in public places in many states and now in Europe as well.

Not all do. I got into an elevator yesterday and someone who had obviously just smoked (maybe a pack ) got on and it stunk up the whole elevator. I didn't think it was possible. I felt like gagging. Good thing my ride was only seven floors.

No I haven't but I've talked to quite a few who left Carnival to work on other lines. And I can tell you that all Lines perks are not created equal. Some lines have smaller cabins, but more freedom for the entertainers to use passenger areas, including eating venues, which if you listen to anyone who has eaten in the crew or staff mess is a big perk! LOL! Some lines give the entertainers "guest" status. Some lines just have a better working environment from the top down.

To be fair, though, I did hear from two past piano bar entertainers today who when they heard that the piano bars were going non smoking, said they are thinking about going back to Carnival.

I agree. You basically can't smoke anywhere in Maine. All the restaurants and bars are always full. State beaches and parks are non smoking AND this year, local public beaches in my town are now non smoking....Why? because the smokers wrecked it for themselves by tossing their butts all over the beach. It had nothing to do with the smoke/odor, but the trail of butt-litter that smokers make. They wrecked it for themselves....
