I thought the Serenade was Captain Karin. Now I see she is doing a rotation on the Majesty. Does anyone know if she is going back to the Serenade? If so, when?

 

Capt Karin is assigned to Majesty now, she will not be going back to Serenade. The captains are only on a ship 3-5 years before RCI moves them. They want their masters to be familiar with all the class of ships that they have. The ones that have been on a ship for longer are the ones with some seniority and and pick and choose when they move and what ship they go to.

no, RCI doesn't assign their masters to Pullmantur ships. Pullmantur has its own officers.

I could have sworn that there was some movement between RCI and Azamara. I know that Princess and Cunard swap officers all the time.

I've never heard of any of RCCL's cruse lines inter-changing ships' officers (navigation officers, that is -- don't know about hotel staff, though). For example, the captains/crews on all of the X ships are Greek. :cool:

Captain Trym moved over to Azamara on an interim basis when one of their Captains had to retire suddenly. But I think that was an emergency situation, and not the norm. Not that I have any real knowledge, just my sense.:p

Capt Gerry did a stint with Celebrity and Capt Stig did a stint with Azamara...since they have English speaking bridge crew. Pullmantur has Spanish speaking officers, carrying a majority of Spanish passengers. I was watching Monarch begin her final voyage and Pullmantur's bridge team was on board. When Capt Rune let one of the officers blow the horn on departure, he had to do it with hand signals as the officer didn't speak English. Therefore, unless the RCI masters are fluent in Spanish (Capt Been is), I doubt they'll be working for Pullmantur anytime soon.

I'm pretty sure when things go wrong, the Bridge officers have to speak English. There's a recorder up there (similar to a cockpit voice recorder) for the authorities.

 

When I was reading about the fire on the Carnival Splendor, John Heald wrote that the Captain reminded all the officers on the Bridge that they had to speak English during the emergency.

With all respect, that's bull****! All navigation officers have to speak English or they won't get the certificate for being a mate.
