It's that time again: Oceania is, we understand, in the midst of vetting possibilities for godmother for its new Riviera and don't you think Cruise Critic should have a say? :)

The ship will be christened somewhere on the French Riviera.

When I heard that they had chosen the name Riviera, my first thought for the godmother was Gene Tierney.

genetierney004laura.jpg Beauty, class, sophistication, AND she starred in a movie that made her the perfect choice:

Unfortunately, Miss Tierney is no longer with us, so I'm off to do some research on those other ladies.......

Sophia Loren......................Of course!

Sophia Loren is Godmother to the MSC Opera and the MSC Fantasia, was Godmother to MSC Lirica and according to Cruise Critic, "she'll probably be the godmother of all of MSC's newly built ships from now on. Why? MSC's tagline is simple and direct -- "Beautiful. Passionate. Italian."

Helen Mirren is Godmother to P&O's Ventura.

Dame Helen is one of our best actresses.

And if she were the Rivieras' Godmother, the artistic possibilities would be staggering.

That crest on the bow of the Marina is great, but....
